I have enjoyed sharing information and opportunities with all of you over the years. I hope some of it has been useful to you. Yahoogroups, the service the Homeschool HUB uses to send out this email newsletter, will be permanently shutting down on December 15th. Rather than try to migrate to a new listserv, the email newsletter will be ending.

Parents are advised to research, screen videos, or watch with their children to address any topics or statements that they feel needs clarification or discussion.

Scishow is a channel that shares science news for teens and adults. They offer a channel on science for kids. Good for Pre-K through elementary; it is pretty young in tone, which might annoy older kids. The info is good for any age if the "hey kids, look at this..isn't it amazing??!!" chipper tone is tolerable for them.

RedCat Reading offers a channel with lots of phonics and early reading videos. Even though my son is well past the phonics stage, we still love to watch their series "Phonics Time with Masa and Junya" because it's just so cute. They also do videos on sight words and funny songs to teach reading, like "There's a Pea on the Sea" and "The Chit-Chat Chicken" and they have a Learn to Draw series, too. Good for Pre-K through elementary.

Mathantics offers animated videos on mathematical topics from basics through algebra, explained in a way to make learning math concepts fun for kids. Good for 1st-8th grade.

TEDEd offers animated videos on topics from science to history to literature. The topics are more geared toward older kids and adults.

Mark Rober was a former NASA engineer and also worked for Apple. Now he makes YouTube videos using science and engineering. He often involves kids in his videos. He always explains the science of what he does in the video, and what kid wouldn't want to watch a video about a swimming pool full of jello, a "magic" bowling ball, or a snowball gun? His two videos that are about the stolen packages do include bleeped out swear words from some of the package thieves reacting, so parents may want to skip those two or preview them. He also has a couple videos about how to make Halloween costumes, and the costumes are a bit gory.

Decades ago, Mark Kistler ran a show on drawing for kids on PBS called The Secret City. He does a great job making drawing simple for kids. He offers free videos and livestreams on his YouTube channel. The advantage of the videos is that you can skip to where he is actually drawing rather than chatting or promoting his art camps if you want to.

Kuma Films makes videos of interesting trick skills like yoyos, card tricks, and acrobatics. Aspiring trick artists and filmmakers might enjoy analyzing them, and everyone else might find them interesting to watch.

2021 International Tour Tryouts--YOU CAN REPRESENT THE USA!

Are you a basketball player that would like to take the trip of a lifetime and represent your country?  Tryouts for the 2021 STUDENTathleteWorld Tours will be held this Fall.  Don't miss your chance to show our coaches that you have the talent and character desired to claim a spot on one of the 2021 International Tours!

Players who attend a tryout will play games in front of our staff and coaches.  Players that demonstrate the talent and character we are looking for will earn an invitation to go on a trip of a lifetime while representing the USA!

2) Fernwood Botanical Gardens is Open

Fernwood will be OPEN to members and the general public beginning at 10am on Tuesday, June 16. Our new online, timed ticketing system has been created to maintain maximum safety and social distancing upon entering the garden. Everyone (including members) must schedule their visits to Fernwood using online ticketing BEFORE coming to Fernwood.

Fernwood is committed to providing a safe place to enjoy the outdoors. Our staff has taken measures and asks for visitor cooperation to help Fernwood maintain a safe environment for all.

 Every person coming to Fernwood MUST have registered online in advance for a designated date and time - including members. No walk-ups allowed. G3) Michigan Tech Welcomes Homeschoolers

Hello from Michigan Technological University, where it is my second year leading the College of Engineering. We are located in Houghton, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in "Copper Country." Founded in 1885 to train mining engineers (because of the copper), the university is now a comprehensive, technologically focused university, with over 7,000 students (which doubles the local population when school is in session!).

I am writing at the urging of one of the College's advisory board members, an alumna of Michigan Tech. In her words: "Janet, I think Michigan Tech would resonate with people who have prioritized education through home schooling." She went on to recount the strong safety record we have at Michigan Tech, the hands-on emphasis, the 24 student-run Enterprise teams, and more. I promised her I'd reach out.

In the College of Engineering, nearly 1,000 new students join us each fall, selecting one of 16 different majors (biomedical engineering, environmental engineering, geology, applied geophysics, geological engineering, materials science and engineering, mining engineering, surveying engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, chemical engineering, construction management, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering).

And one more, our fastest growing major, the Bachelor of Science in Engineering, allows students to tailor their degree to fit their interests (e.g. a BS in Engineering, with global studies emphasis).

There are many other majors available at Michigan Tech—through the College of Computing, the College of Sciences and Arts, the College of Business and Economics, and the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science.

Our career fairs are competitive, meaning that companies compete with each other to hire our students! No less than 351 companies were here in September because of the very strong reputation of our graduates. "When you want an individual with hands-on experience—you got to Michigan Tech," is what I hear, over and over.

At our Department of Mechanical Engineering's senior dinner, where soon-to-be-graduates make an obligation to themselves to uphold the standards of the engineering profession.  I participated as well: "As an Engineer, I, Janet Callahan, pledge to practice integrity and fair dealing, tolerance and respect; and to uphold devotion to the standards and the dignity of my profession, conscious always that my skill carries with it the obligation to serve humanity by making the best use of the Earth's precious wealth. As an Engineer, I shall participate in none but honest enterprises. When needed, my skill and knowledge shall be given without reservation for the public good. In the performance of duty and in fidelity to my profession, I shall give my utmost."

2020 Theme: "Reducing Individual Impacts"

The Clean Tech Competition is back, and we are incredibly excited for our 9th annual event! 2019 saw teams from 40 countries compete, with representatives from Zimbabwe, China, the United States, Philippines, Singapore and Italy joining us in New York City, vying for the honor of Clean Tech Winner! This international research and design challenge for 15-18 year old pre-university student's challenges teams to be as innovative as possible as they look to create a sustainable solution to our future. It is the perfect way to combine a love for science with a commitment to civic duty and we would love to see teams from Indiana join us this year!

To us, this year's theme encapsulates the struggle we all go through daily; one where it feels like you as an individual are unable to do much in the grand scheme of things, but you wish to make a difference. This year we are looking to our competitors to help us answer this existential question. But as we know, this struggle can vary deeply all over the world, depending on the means your community has. Which leads us to our categories:

We want students to research a specific area and challenge, then propose something that individuals can do to reduce their footprint and solve that challenge, based on having limited or an excess of resources. There are quite literally a world of problems out there we can solve, making the possibilities for your students almost endless. Challenge them today to make that difference!

Competition Information
Each year, the Spellman High Voltage Electronics Clean Tech Competition encourages scientific understanding of real-world issues and the integration of environmentally responsible energy sources. The goals and guidelines are as follows:

    Teams consist of 1-3 students, are assisted by a Team Leader (i.e. parent, teacher, or mentor), to develop a written proposal.
    There is no entry fee.
    First Round consists of written Paper Submissions
    10 Finalist Teams per category are selected and given a $200 stipend to help them prepare a Prototype and presentation for the Finalist Event.
    Finalists compete for the $10,000 grand prize in each category, and a 'Continued Mentorship'

1) Free Homeschool Gym and Facilities

Elkhart Parks and Recreation does not shy away from keeping everyone involved. The facility is welcoming in homeschool families and co-ops to the Tolson on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The program will allow the homeschooled children a chance to get out of the house and into a different setting. The co-ops are encouraged to take advantage of the facilities by exploring the gym, playing on the play ground, or even throwing the ball around on the field. 2) Theater Opportunities

My name is Grace Lazarz and I'm the Education Specialist at South Bend Civic Theatre.  I am reaching out because I'd love to get the word out to your homeschool families about the class offerings we have at South Bend Civic Theatre.  Our next session of classes starting in November were recently posted, and we have something for grades kindergarten through adults in acting, voice, improv, dance, and more!

I should also let you know that we do have scholarships available to make the classes affordable for folks.  Info on that can be found at http://sbct.org/education/scholarship-request-form/.  It's pretty easy to submit and we can reduce the cost a significant amount depending on household income and other factors.  We also have a program called No Actor Left Behind where if you audition for a show and don't make it into the cast you can take one of our classes for free.  We have auditions for The Lion King Jr. coming up for 2nd-8th graders in December if that's of interest too!

4) Bethel University "Sense & Sensibility"

Bethel University Theatre Department presents "Sense & Sensibility" by Kate Hamill, based on the novel by Jane Austen. Performances of the show, directed by Deb Swerman, will run Nov. 14, 15*, and 16 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Nov. 16 at 1 p.m., in the Everest-Rohrer Auditorium on Bethel's campus.

This playful new adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the Dashwood sisters — sensible Elinor and hypersensitive Marianne — after their father's sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable. Set in gossipy late 18th-century England, with a fresh female voice, the play is full of humor, emotional depth, and bold theatricality. "Sense & Sensibility" examines our reactions, both reasonable and ridiculous, to societal pressures. When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?

[HUBNEWSLETTER] SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: LANSING EVENT POSTPONED

 

The event in Lansing on Tuesday September 10 is called off for now. With the school year just starting up, too many people were unable to attend. Hopefully, a new event can be organized for October or November so our voices can be heard. With more time to plan and organize, and with more time for people to settle into their schedules and routines for the year, it will be a more effective event with more people able to attend.

1) Art Exhibit at Bethel University

Bethel University's Weaver Gallery presents their opening art exhibition of the 2019-2020 academic year. The artwork will be on display from Sept. 6 through Oct. 31, 2019. This show will be a collaborative effort, featuring guest artist William Potter's artwork in the Weaver Gallery and Bethel University's Kindergarten Lab students' artwork in the Great Hall.

William Potter is an Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and an Associate Professor of Foundation Studies at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis.  His exhibit, "Among the Marks," will feature several large works created with a full circle approach (hand to sketch, sketch to screen, machine to studio and back to the hand again) involving many mediums.

"I see the working process as a form of conceptual engagement. As I am working in the studio, I am making abstract ideas physical. I see thinking as tied to structure. The constructions then become a tangible form that mirrors the structure of thinking. They evolve, shift, and re-contextualize like a thought does. I am inspired directly by process, form, and the beauty of abstract relationships," Potter says.

"LabK Unveiled" will run concurrent to Mr. Potter's exhibit and will be an invigorating demonstration of the artistic perspective of kindergarten students.  Bethel Art Professor Chad Eric Jay worked in conjunction with Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Ariana Grabill, as well as other Department of Art students and staff, in order to achieve this first-of-its-kind exhibition.  These kindergarten students are all a part of the on-campus Kindergarten Lab class, made possible by Bethel's Education Department and School City of Mishawaka. This exhibition is free and open to the public.

The Weaver Gallery Hours are Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.


2) Corydon Homeschool Day

 Good afternoon! We are now accepting reservations for our popular Homeschool Day event!

Join us on October 9 for a special day at Corydon Capitol State Historic Site tailored especially for homeschooling families! The day includes hands-on activities, interactive presentations, and tons of fun and learning!

Choose to attend either the morning (9:00 a.m.-noon) or afternoon (1 p.m.-4 p.m.) session. You will be assigned a group to rotate through the different activity stations where you'll learn about Indiana history, march like a soldier in 1812, make historic crafts, and more!

Reservations are required and can be made by calling the site at 812-738-4890. Tickets are $8/student. Parent/guardian free. Recommended for ages 6-13, but other ages welcome. Group reservations are welcome, but must be made as a group (not individually). Tickets are non-refundable and this event is held rain or shine.

Reservations fill up quickly. It's recommended to call early!

3) Talking Points in Support of Partnerships in Michigan

Anyone who wants to speak up in support of Partnerships in Michigan now has a sheet of talking points to research and use when calling, writing, or visiting legislators, and when speaking to the state school board on September 10th in Lansing, if they wish.  Please see the attached file.


4) Events and Exhibits at The History Museum

Shakespeare Tea  September 22, 2019 ~ 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
To tea or not to tea, that is the question. Let's do! Be enchanted with Shakespeare at this tea presented by The History Museum. You will be shown to your table, festive with decorations. This one-of-a-kind experience offers a menu of savories, sweets, and classic teas, and includes visits to the exhibit Full Circle: Shakespearean Culture at Notre Dame. Tickets are $25/general; $20/members; and $20/youth 4-17. Reservations are required by September 19 and can be made online by clicking here or by calling 574.235.9664.

Keepers of the Fire: The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, on view April 27, 2019 – January 19, 2020.
Keepers of the Fire: The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi explores the thriving community through interviews and oral histories, sculpture and beadwork, art and artifacts. The exhibit immerses visitors in the traditions and teachings of the Pokagon Band.

As visitors move through the exhibit, they can discover pottery, ceramics, quillwork, black ash baskets, and many other art forms of the Pokagon Band. They can also view floral designs common in Potawatomi beadwork designs and learn about the significance of the clothing made and worn, including beaded gloves, moccasins, and other regalia. Special areas on music, language, and housing of the Pokagon invite reflection of the Band's culture and customs. Visitors can see The History Museum's Van Sanden portraits of Leopold Pokagon and Topinabee, the only known paintings of these Pokagon leaders.. Sections on the history and political nature of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi give perspectives of the past and present. When European explorers first arrived in this area, they met the first people–the Potawatomi. Hundreds of years later, while many of their people were forcibly removed, the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi remained, through the wisdom of their elders. Today a federally-recognized sovereign nation, the Pokagon Band demonstrates their influence and strength, and their continued reliance upon the Seven Grandfather teachings—wisdom, love, respect, courage, honesty, humility, and family. Keepers of the Fire: The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi celebrates and honors these first peoples of the area.

The Final Frontier: Bendix and the Apollo Program  July 8, 2019 – June 28, 2020  Carroll Gallery
It was 50 years ago, on July 20, 1969, that U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon. This remarkable accomplishment was achieved less than 10 years after President John F. Kennedy challenged the U.S. on May 25, 1961, in his famous speech: "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth." Going to the moon required innovation, engineering, and an enormous amount of manpower. The craft sent to the moon featured the largest rocket ever built, with the most complicated equipment ever designed, and cost billions of dollars to develop. The equipment needed for the Apollo missions was a marvel of engineering, with every part critical to the program's success. South Bend's Bendix Corporation was essential in its development. The contract for the lunar module was awarded to Grumman Aircraft in 1963, which delegated the $350 million project to several subcontractors, including South Bend's Bendix Corporation.

Through artifacts, photographs and documents, The Final Frontier: Bendix and the Apollo Program tells the story of the Apollo program and chronicles its mark on history. An Apollo spacesuit, on loan from the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Kansas, is a stellar centerpiece of the exhibit.

7) We Can Ride 4-H Club Open Fun Show Scheduled

We Can Ride 4-H Club will hold an open fun show at the Buchanan Westerners Riding Club  Grounds  on  Saturday,  September  21,  2019 starting at 8:00 a.m. Buchanan Westerners is located at 14665 Mead Road, Buchanan, MI 49107.

We Can Ride 4-H Club is part of the MSU Extension's Proud Equestrian Program that enables disabled youth to learn horseback riding skills, showmanship techniques, and stable management. Benefits to the participants include improved balance and coordination, strengthened muscles, improved motor skills, and   increased self-confidence.  

As part of celebrating the end of summer and a successful riding season, the fun show will include a fun fair of activities and games for non-riders and spectators to enjoy. Fernwood has a completely different feel under the cover of darkness—the streams seem louder, katydids are calling, and stars grace the overhead sky. Discover how unique nature is at night, call for screech owls, and listen for bats hunting for insects. Please bring a flashlight.  $12 (Members $10) All children 8 and under are free. Color Wheel Saturday September 29   Join us for a natural dyeing workshop led by members of Detroit's natural dye collective, Color Wheel! You'll have the chance to experiment with a bundle dyeing technique that transfers natural color from freshly gathered botanicals onto silk scarves. Color Wheel will also lead a garden tour, exploring the native and cultivated dye plants growing at Fernwood. Check Fernwood's website for more details.

9) Paid Research Opportunity

Dear Friends of the CLAD Lab at Notre Dame,

We are currently studying how parents and children interact with different types of picture books. As part of the study, we are inviting children ages 3-4.5 years old to come with a parent or guardian to Notre Dame to participate in one picture book session. Participating children will look at two children's books with their parent/guardian and then will complete a few activities with one of our team members. Participating families get to choose a children's book to take home with them, and they also receive $20.
