3) Dear Parents, Children's Conferences International is excited to be returning to the 2009 Indiana Association of Home Educators convention (IAHE) April 3 - 4. This years theme is Pirates of the Cranium during which your children will learn the importance of taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. (2 Cor 10:5)

Personally, I'm getting tired of our culture promoting pirates as something to emulate and celebrate. Our theme does just the opposite as we encourage your children to be faithful sailors for our Captain Jesus Christ. We will also teach them strategies from God's Word in how to protect our minds and hearts from 'pirate' thoughts that seek to infiltrate our lives.
Pirates of the Cranium includes exciting dramatized stories, original music and active scripture memory all designed to reinforce the lessons being taught. ... and we can't forget the games, obstacle course, crafts and visits from Dexter the (Sea)Dragon and Slippy the Seal!

If you haven't done so already, save time at the convention by pre-registering your children today at our easy registration page.

Every year we receive applications for participation in our ministry by enthusiastic volunteers. If you or your young ladies and gentlemen enjoy ministering to children and would like to be a part of our team, please consider joining us this year at the IAHE convention! You can learn more regarding us and this opportunity, or to submit an application on our web site:

Lots of things to do this Saturday at Explorations and Heritage Square:

Then, at noon, stroll over to the Martin's Fountain for the main event:  The Ice Sculpture Competition.  Local sculpters will compete to make the "coolest" sculpture in the area.
Also, Heritage Square is sponsoring FREE Carriage Rides for families throughout the day AND Leinie Lodge will be at Martins serving hot chili to raise funds for Heat for Homes.

5) Boxcar Children on stage--TICKETS 574.293.4469, www.elcotheatre.com/onstage
Generations of young readers have cherished the spirited Depression-era adventures of The Boxcar Children, and now the Alden children's story comes to life on stage. Orphaned and in danger of being sent to different foster homes, the four siblings run away and make their home in an abandoned railroad boxcar.

Pursued by the authorities and a mysterious stranger, the children discover the rewards and perils of life on the run, as well as the joy of keeping their family together.

"We have designed a unique visit day for homeschooled high school students and their families to explore Cornerstone University.  During your visit you will experience dorm life, meet incredible college students who were also homeschooled, learn how to financially plan for a Christ-centered education, interact with your personal admissions counselor and learn how to take college classes while still in high school through our early enroll program."

Note: this is completely free and includes meals and a great gift. To schedule your spot at Homeschool Preview Day call us at (800)787-9778 by Feb 19,2009.

My daughter, Ashley Bliss, is currently a student at Cornerstone and is sending this invitation to homeschoolers in the Michiana Area.  Ashley will be on a panel discussion and will be available to eat meals with anyone who requests her.  She has also extended the invitation to spend the night in her dorm room if you choose to stay overnight the night before or the night after.   She only has room for one or two people.  You may call me if this is something your daughter would like to do or if you have any other questions - Gail Bliss 574-340-1025 or 269-683-0439.

5)  SSI is a great civics opportunity! My son, Jon, and his friend went to this last year. It was incredible! He came home changed. He developed confidence, leadership, and with a better understanding of hard work and camaraderie. All this and a fantastic civics lesson as well!  I know it's not cheap, but we were so pleased by what a wonderful program it is, we scrimped on curriculum this past year to save enough to send Jon back along with his brother Matthew. I can't recommend it highly enough!

If anyone else is interested, let me know. Maybe we can get a group discount!

LAST BUT NOT LEAST--LINKS OF INTEREST (links do not imply endorsement):

Hey Fellow Homeschoolers! The Jonas Brothers want to give back to their homeschool fans. As homeschoolers themselves, they share a special connection. In spite of an increasingly busy schedule after a performance at the Grammy Awards this week and preparing for the upcoming release of their 3D movie on the weekend of February 27, they are giving a "shout out" to homeschoolers on an exclusive conference call scheduled for Thursday morning, February 19. For details about how you and your homeschool family can get on the call, contact Rebecca Kochenderfer at www.homeschool.com/registration who is hosting the family-to-family chat. The Jonas Brothers and their mom, Denise Jonas, will be on the call and want to connect with you and your family.

1) Please remember that there is another tubing date set for February 20, 2009 at Five Pines in Berrien Springs.  This outing is set for 10 am until 3pm but you can come and go when you like.  This is a great time to get out and enjoy the snow and to fellowship with other home schoolers!

Tubing OR Cross-country skiing only - $6
Tubing AND Cross-country skiing - $9

Please call to rsvp so that I can confirm a count.  Diane Day 269-445-1900

2) The location and dates for the 2009 Berrien County Spelling Bee have been confirmed. It will be held on Friday May 15, 2009, at 10:00a.m. at The Chapel, 4250 Washington Ave., St. Joseph.

There will be two practices, Monday, May 4, 11:00a.m., and Friday May 8, 3:00p.m.  If you wish to participate, please send the registration fee of $3.00 for each participant to Michele Megna, 5298 Riverside Rd., Coloma, MI 49038. February 28, 2009, is the deadline for registering. With your fee(s), please send the first and last name(s) of all participants with the grade they are studying, and your name, address, telephone number, and email address. Also, be sure to let me know if you do not already have the word lists.

How to choose the correct list: If your student knows more than half of the words on a list, or it is very easy for him to learn the words, please use the next level. This is to make the bee fair for all participants.

Practicing: At the bee, your student will be expected to say the word, spell it, and say it again. This method helps the pronouncer know that the child heard the correct word and that he is finished spelling the word. Practicing this way at home makes this second nature and very comfortable for the speller.

There will be ten rounds in each grade level. Elimination rounds will be used in the case of ties. First, second and third place will be awarded in each grade level. If your child is in a grade by himself, he will need to attain the lowest correct number of words attained by the places awarded in other grades. I will explain this again at the practice because I know it can be confusing. Again, after experience and much consideration, this rule is to make the bee fair. Besides the place awards, there will be participation ribbons and prizes for all participants. We want this to be fun, not stressful.

Don't hesitate to call or email Michele Megna with any questions you still have at 849-0172 or mewmegna@sbcglobal.net.  BTW, I received an answering machine message on 2/27 concerning the bee which was inadvertently erased, so if you left a message for me that day, please call again.

3) We would like to find out if there are homeschool students ages 10+ who are interested in rocks/minerals/geology and would like to join in forming some kind of group, either a rock club, or study class. I have located a GREAT instructor who is willing to work with my 10-year-old daughter, Morgan, and any of our interested students!  We are still in the process of discussing exactly WHAT we're going to do, but I wanted to find out if there are students who have this interest.  Email Valerie Boruff at vboruff@gmail.com.

5) Flint Children's Museum program
6) Earthworks program

And LAST BUT NOT LEAST: classified ads and links of interest at the end of your weekly news!  Remember to check on the items in the Total Recall section below.

1) Writing Contest – Write a Book Review!
Write a book review—with a twist! Little Dozen Press is sponsoring a new contest for writers ages 11 and up. Review your favourite novel or other work of fiction. In your review, pinpoint a specific writing technique which the author does well, and share what you have learned about writing from reading the book.
The entry deadline is March 15. Winners will receive their choice of book by Rachel Starr Thomson, signed by the author. All entrants who give their permission will have their review published on Inklings, Rachel's blog for young (and other) writers.
Entries should be emailed to thomson.rachel@gmail.com with "Writing Contest" in the subject line.
Winners will be chosen from three age categories: 11-13, 15-17, and 18 and up.
Guidelines
A review is more than a book report. Your goal in a review is to give an overview of the story, share your opinions, and pinpoint what the writer does especially well. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you write a review for the contest:
-Don't share the whole story. You want to give readers a sense of the plot without overloading them with details. Especially avoid "spoilers"—giving away surprise plot twists or telling readers how the story ends.
-Make your opinion clear. A review has much in common with a persuasive essay. Your opinions are just as important as the facts, so share your own thoughts about the book.
-Be creative. A review is a piece of creative writing, so don't be afraid to let your own voice shine!
-Tell us what you learned from the writer. Our special focus in this contest is writing technique. Pay attention to what this writer does well—in plotting, characterization, description, word choice, dialogue, or any other element of storytelling. Give examples. Tell us what you have learned from this writer's work.
-Reviews of Rachel's books are not eligible to win—but if you'd like to write one, we'll be thrilled to publish it! If you review a book written or published by a family member or friend, let us know—we'll make a special note of it so our readers can learn about the work being done by independent authors and publishers.
Blog Publication
All entries (with permission from their authors) will be published on Inklings, Rachel Starr Thomson's blog (www.rachelstarrthomson.com/inklings/). Others will be encouraged to comment on them. We hope to start a few discussions about good books and good writing!
Prizes
Three winners will be chosen, one from each age category. Winners will receive a signed copy of one of Rachel Starr Thomson's books of their own choosing. Rachel's books include the fantasy novels Worlds Unseen and Burning Light, several devotional works, and Tales of the Heartily Homeschooled.
To read excerpts and reviews, see cover art, or learn more about the books, visit www.rachelstarrthomson.com.
