1) Host a Japanese exchange student

 Greetings from Michigan 4-H!

I am an Educator with the 4-H Youth Development Program of Michigan State University Extension.  I coordinate an international exchange program that brings a delegation of youth (ages 12-16) from Japan to Michigan for 4 weeks this summer.  I am seeking Michigan families who would be able to host a Japanese youth in their home July 26-August 22, 2015.  Please see below in this email for more information.  Families do not need to be involved in the 4-H program in order to host, this program is open to ALL Michigan families!

We generally have quite a few homeschool families participate in this exchange program, and the hands-on, experiential nature of the program fits especially well with the educational philosophies of many homeschooling families.

Thanks!!

Brian

The Michigan 4-H International Program is in need of 12 additional host families to host a Japanese youth for 1 month this summer.  Japanese youth on the other side of the world are anxiously waiting to learn who their new family might be! The focus of this exchange program is on sharing your everyday family life with your Japanese delegate. Special trips and activities are not required.  Previous involvement with 4-H is also not required to become a host family.

For more information go to: http://4h.msue.msu.edu/resources/japan_summer_inbound_exchange

Who are the Japanese Youth?
The Japanese youth participating in this exchange program are between the ages of 12 and 16.  They are participants in an organization in Japan called Labo, which provides Japanese youth with opportunities to improve their English-language abilities and learn about other cultures.  Labo and 4-H have been partners in this international exchange program since 1972.  See the full list of delegate profiles at http://tinyurl.com/Delegate-List-Mich-Labo-2015. The Japanese youth have a wide variety of interests!  We can put a delegate on hold for your family while you complete your application.  Don't see a good match? Contact us and we can look at other states' delegates too.

What are requirements of host families?
The host family application process include completing an application, reference & background checks and an in-home interview with a 4-H staff person from Michigan State University Extension.  Host families have the option of picking-up and dropping off their Japanese student in Okemos, Northern Michigan or the Upper Peninsula.  During the exchange, host families are not required to participate in any specific activities, although many host families choose to attend some local 4-H events, county fairs, or get together with other host families in their area.  Host families do not need to be able to speak Japanese in order to host.  The Japanese youth can sleep in a bedroom with a child of the same sex, but they do need to have their own bed or mattress.

How to Apply:
Download and complete the forms included in a host family application packet, available to download at http://4h.msue.msu.edu/uploads/files/4-HInternational/2015_Host_Family_Application_Packet.pdf

Contact:
If interested, please act quickly! We need to finalize host family assignments as soon as possible. Please contact the Michigan 4-H International Exchange - Japan Summer Inbound Program Coordinator: Brian Wibby at wibby@anr.msu.edu or call him at 906-475-5731 if you are interested in hosting a delegate or if you have any questions about the exchange.

7) Bethel College Summer Camps for Kids

Bethel will offer its annual academic camps, which provide campers from ages 9-14 with the opportunity to explore their interests with college professors, instructors and leaders who channel their knowledge into a fun, hands-on college learning experience. Make new friends and explore with us!

Camp dates are July 6-10 and July 13-17. Register online at BethelCollege.edu/Camps and email Academic.Camps@BethelCollege.edu with questions. The registration deadline is two weeks prior to each camp. If space is available, late registrations will be accepted up to the first day of camp.

Food Fun Science Camp with Beth Kroa, assistant professor of chemistry

July 6-10, 9 a.m. to noon  $110
Food, glorious food! We all need to eat, but how do chemists help create our food? Learn how food chemists analyze the snacks we eat. We'll measure the content of sugar, vitamin C, iron and calories in different food items. Chemical tests will be used to determine whether a food contains carbohydrates, fats or proteins. We'll simulate digestion (GROSS!), looking to see how our bodies do their business! Have fun exploring the types of chemicals and nutrients in our food!

Dance Camp with Karen Pajor, dance instructor and choreographer

July 6-10, 1 to 3 p.m.  $110
Come join us for a week of dance! If you want to work on improving your dance skills for upcoming auditions and shows or if you just want to move to music, this camp will be perfect. No experience needed to join us! We will work on basic steps while improving technique. We will put some combinations to your favorite musical songs! Please wear comfortable clothing and bring your smile! Dance shoes are not required.

Gospel Choir Camp with Zach Gillis, gospel choir director

July 6-10, 9 a.m. to noon  $110
In this camp we will do so much more than sing. Although singing is a major component, we will dive into the technical aspect of gospel music through learning vocal techniques, performance, and song delivery while having fun doing it! The week will culminate in a small gospel concert featuring the campers so they can really show their stuff! If you love to sing, then this is the camp for you! Gospel music has a rich history in the United States of America and has been a common form of religious expression with roots dating back to the 17th century. Placing an emphasis on dominant vocal harmonies, gospel music has been known to stir souls across the world.

Ceramics Camps with Suzanne Mauro, professor of art

July 13-17, 9 a.m. to noon  $110
If you like to get your hands dirty, then this is the camp for you. Come join us for a week of creativity as we explore the material of clay. Students will get to learn how clay has been used for thousands of years to not only make vessels but sculptural forms as well. Your child will experience all aspects of the ceramic process from formation to firing and finishing their pieces with glaze.

Chef Camp with James Metherd, head of culinary

July 13-17, 9 a.m. to noon $110
Cooking isn't just for grown-ups anymore! More and more kids are discovering an interest in food and cooking. If it is scary imagining your kids taking cooking lessons in your home kitchen, send them to our profession kitchen instead! During this week your kids will learn basic knife skills, food safety, basic nutrition, entree preparation, meal planning, and organizational skills. By the end of the week your child will be able to provide a restaurant quality meal for their loved ones. The week will conclude with a meal prepared and served to show off the students' newly acquired skills!

Theatre Camp with Hannah Taubitz, Bethel theatre alumna

July 13-17, 9 a.m. to noon   $110
Do you enjoy the world of make-believe? Do you enjoy exploring different characters and personalities? Would you like to build your confidence and make new friends? If so, join us this summer learning all you can about the fun of performing on the stage. Each day we will learn new games and exercises that help build on your own natural creativity. G5) Nature Writing and Art Contest

The BirdSleuth K-12 program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology uses birds and nature to teach kids about science. Now, BirdSleuth is hoping to spark an eloquent and artistic view of the natural world with its first "Nature Investigators Writing and Art Contest." The contest is open to all young people from ages 5 through 18, whether or not they use BirdSleuth.

"If you're sending in a written entry, then please describe your neighborhood or school habitat, what you see there, what you do, and what you think or feel about it," explains BirdSleuth leader Jen Fee. "You can send us a short story or poetry. Artwork might be a drawing or painting of a real or imagined bird, a map of your local habitat, or a photograph."

Entries will be accepted through August 14, 2015.

Two written entries and two artworks will be published in the 2016 BirdSleuth Investigator Magazine, and several works of art will be displayed at the Cornell Lab during a future art show. Selected entries will also receive a free Feathered Friends Window Feeder kit.

"We've got a separate category for educators too," says Fee. "Show us your photos of young people exploring the natural environment, or doing hands-on projects for community habitats inspired through BirdSleuth's Nature Detectives lessons."

1) Jan Bret could come to Mishawaka

Hello to our local schools, teachers & educators!!

It's not often, but we sometimes get the opportunity to host a very special and nationally recognized author here at Barnes & Noble. Most of the national authors will go to the Indianapolis market because it's larger and they have greater attendance there. I'd like to change that status quo because I believe that the entire Michiana region will support hosting a national author. I am working with 2 of our local libraries along with a well established business to send a proposal to national children's author Jan Brett. We want Jan to visit us this holiday season along with the arrival of her new book "The Turnip!" Jan will only visit areas where she has a guaranteed audience of significant size and we need your help to entice her to stop here on her next national tour this holiday season! If you would like for Jan to stop here and are willing to commit to attending her signing, please share some information with me and I will keep in touch with you every step of the way!
