"Pre-update" - Showcase and Capitol Day

These two items are happening soon, so we are sending out a "Pre-update" this week, to get the info to you in time.

1)  The Homeschool Showcase is this Saturday, May 1st, in Niles.  It's from 10am til 2pm at the Bertrand Crossing Campus of Lake Michigan College, which is at the intersection of the 31 bypass and US 12.  For the entire time there will be robotics and Fab Lab demonstrations and art displays.  The tables will be set up to show the Lego robots in action - these are built and programmed by students in elementary and junior high.  In the shop the high school robot will be running, with students and adults allowed to try their hands at the joystick controls.  The Fab Lab will have a table showing student projects and will be running the laser cutter and vinyl cutter for you to see in action.  At 11:30 the Homeschool Choir under the direction of Valerie Rumpf will be performing, as well as guitar and recorder ensembles.  At 1pm the Spanish students will perform several songs.  From 12:30 - 2pm there will be chess lessons/demonstration/mini tournament (possibly).  The chess program is flexible, dependent upon the number and skill level of students and adults who come.  Marty may set up a row of 10 or 12 boards and play against all takers at once!  There will be info on week long summer camps in Robotics, Fab Lab/Entrepreneurship, and Fab Lab/Engineering.  There will also be info on the Homeschool HUB and the Parent Partnership for next fall.  You can see some of the artwork created in the Buchanan Art Center and Krasl classes this year.

We will have a "hangout room" with games and snacks throughout the entire time.

Come celebrate the year, and start planning for summer and next year.

2)  This next event has a sign-up period that ends this Saturday, May 1st.

If you bake and would like to help Gail out please cut and past the questionnaire below into an email and send it to her.

I am taking a business class that required that I create a business plan, so I thought about what I like to do most and came up with the idea of a cake, candy and cookie supply shop in Niles, Michigan.  This Shop would contains supplies for creating confectionaries and would have a small coffee shop attached that would serve confectionaries created from the supplies in the shop to showcase examples of what could be made.  The results of this questionnaire will go into my business plan.  Thank you so much for your participation.  If you could return this in the next week or so that would be great.  Please feel free to pass on to others.

10) Homeschoolers Sought for German-American ePal Program

The German-American ePal Program educates German students and their families on advantages of homeschooling while improving their English. It enriches homeschoolers with a unique learning experience and new friendships.  Knowledge of German is not required, but homeschoolers studying German rapidly improve their language skills.

Participants must be 12–17 years old and are paired with same-gender ePals according to similarities. Parents oversee their child's ePal experience. Christian German ePals may also be requested. Homeschoolers may also request more than one German ePal at no extra cost.

The German-American ePal Program was developed in 2008 by 14-year-old homeschooler Claire Gleason and her mother, Susan, during an annual trip to Germany.  Fluent in German, the Gleasons are connected with many public, private and Christian schools in Germany, where they have seen a growing interest in homeschooling.  They have also visited German families who are homeschooling in hiding.

The German-American ePal Program is partnering with Homeschool America Inc. (HSA), which oversees applications from homeschoolers. The director for homeschooled American students is HSA rep Sondra Muench. Susan Gleason is the director for German students. All students are screened.

Parents and teachers are assured of safe, secure internet communication with personalized service.

Join other homeschoolers across the nation who are participating in the ePal Program and having the time of their lives!

There is a one-time enrollment fee:

  • U.S. Homeschoolers: $6
  • Family Fee: $10 (if you have 2 or more homeschoolers in your household)
