1) This will be my final push for CAMPBELL LABELS for 2009.  We will continue to collect them, but they are offering special incentives for turning in certain amounts by December 31.  I plan to mail what I have on December 29 and hope to get an overwhelming influx of labels by then.

You may email me, call me or drop them at my location.  I will be in Edwardsburg for church on Wednesdays and Sundays.  I will be at SMC in Dowagiac 3 days next week.

Please make every effort to get with me and turn those labels in.  Right now is the absolute best time to get involved!

Thank you

2) Spelling Bee for SW Michigan homeschoolers

The Homeschool HUB will be sponsoring a local bee for the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee on January 29th at 9:30am.  The top three spellers will advance to the regional level.  The entry fee is $12.  The study words are located at http://myspellit.com/.  The eligibility requirements are here: http://www.spellingbee.com/eligibility-0.  To sign up contact Kathy Joyce at 269 695-1654.

3) I am an experienced theatre/speech and sign language teacher and I love to teach others!  I have taught at Lake Michigan College, Buchanan HIgh School and Lakeshore High School. I currently run the Box Factory Theatre Company and I'm hoping to offer some group lessons on any of the above.  I take students of all ages.  If you are interested, please contact me.

In addition, as the Education Director at the Box Factory for the Arts, the Berrien Artist Guild is very interested in offering various art classes to any age student. Please contact me to arrange a class to fit your needs! Thanks again.

4) Ring in the New Year and catch a glimpse of the new Shadowland Ball Room in the new Bluffside Development in St. Joseph.

Southwest Michigan Symphony will be hosting an event at the Shadowland Ballroom on December 31st.

Volunteers will greet guests, check coats and usher from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  They are looking for 4 volunteers to assist and from 11 pm to 1 am they are hoping for 2 volunteers to close out the evening.

Volunteers should dress up in the preferred colors of black, white and silver.

If you traditionally make a New Year¡¯s resolution to get more involved with the community ¨C you can accomplish it as we move into the New Year.  If you are interested in getting connected or you have questions contact:

5) From wikipedia: Kendo („‡µÀ kend¨?), meaning "Way of the Sword", is a modern Japanese martial art of sword-fighting based on traditional Japanese swordsmanship, or Kenjutsu. Kendo is a physically and mentally challenging activity that combines strong martial arts values with sport-like physical element.

There has been interest expressed in restarting the Kendo Club at LMC @ Bertrand Crossing. To participate, you must be enrolled in a class at LMC. If 7-10 people express interest, the instructor said he'd give it a shot. It would meet twice a week, likely tues-thurs, for an hour per session. Please email slhollister@gmail.com if you'd be interested in learning more about this opportunity.

6) Classes for 2010 on Tiller's International web site now

This is an interesting place just this side of Kalamazoo.  It's about an hour's drive from Niles.  They have classes in blacksmithing, coopering, draft animals, timber framing, beekeeping, cheesemaking, and lots more.  The entire year's class schedule is at: www.tillersinternational.org/tillers/classes_classesbydate.html.

Maybe it's a good time to plan a class for next summer and give it as a Christmas gift!

7) It's time for homeschool skiing again!

Attached is a chart comparing the three ski areas in SW Michigan.  Bittersweet comes out on top in everything but driving distance.  Find information here: www.hshub.org/Sports.html.  The forms you send in to join the SW Mich Ski Club and get the discounted rates at Bittersweet are also accessed there.

8) Operetta Performance for Homeschoolers, Thursday & Friday, Jan. 7 & 8 at the Howard Performing Arts Center on the campus of Andrews University.

If there are homeschoolers in the area that would like to bring their children to see a special performance of "Amahl and the Night Visitors" by Gian-Carlo Menotti on January 7 or 8, 2010, please contact Julia Lindsay at jlindsay@andrews.edu to make arrangements.

9) College classes at reduced rates available for both Indiana and Michigan homeschool students.

Michiana high school juniors and seniors can earn college credits by enrolling in Bethel College 's Register Early to Achieve College Hours program (REACH). Through REACH, students, while still in high school, can take college courses at a reduced price and earn transferable credits toward the college of their choice.

To be considered for the REACH program a student must be a junior or senior in a public, private or home school setting, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher have permission from their high school.

A select group of freshman level courses are available including: calculus, college algebra, exploring the Christian faith, introduction to business, introduction to computing, introduction to criminal justice, introduction to theatre, introduction to world civilization and perspectives in fine arts. Available courses are not limited to those included in this release and prerequisites may be required for some classes. Sophomore level courses may also be available with special permission. All courses will be facilitated on campus. A Bethel College transcript with college credits on file will be given when coursework is completed.

REACH offers students a special reduced tuition of $75 per credit hour for the first 12 credits.

Most courses are 3 credit hours. The REACH program also waives application and student activity fees. Course registration for REACH is limited to space availability and is tentative until after the last registration date for traditional students for each fall and spring term.

For complete details about the REACH program, visit our Web site at www.BethelCollege.edu/REACH or contact the admission office at 800.422.4101.

1) I am a classically-trained voice teacher and I love to teach others how to sing! I emphasize a solid breathing technique, vocal health, tension-free singing and intelligent artistry.  I teach musical theater repertoire and classical repertoire.  My students learn how to breathe properly, expand their vocal range, develop a healthy vibrato, project their voice, prepare for an audition, interpret music and musical roles.

I take students of all ages, depending on the maturity and musical level of the student.  If you are interested, please contact me.

The exhibit opens on December 1st and runs through January 7, 2010.  With two shifts each day, the options are as follows:

Monday-Saturday noon till 4 pm or 4 pm to 8pm

4) Dear fellow homeschooling parents,
My name is Melissa and I'm a piano teacher and proud homeschooling mother of 3 children in Warren , Massachusetts .
I'm writing as I have a very special opportunity to offer the homeschool community.  With technology changing the way education and business is done these days it is essential that we keep up with the growing demand for online learning.  This is why we have decided to expand and offer private piano lessons - online.
Private piano lessons online work the same way as traditional private piano lessons.  These are not recorded video lessons; they are given live via webcam with a private instructor.  Lessons can be arranged weekly or biweekly. The benefits of online learning are:
*Comfort of home
*Save money on gas
*Comfort of your own instrument
*Save time and aggravation fighting traffic or inclement weather commuting to lessons
Since this is a new feature being offered and some technical issues may occur we are giving a steep discount on lessons.  Pricing is $9 per 30-minute lesson (normally $18) and will stay at this rate through June 2010.  There will be a free online consultation prior to the first lesson to work out any kinks and be sure we can connect on time without difficultly when lessons are scheduled.  Payment is accepted via Paypal or personal check.  There is absolutely NO obligation or long term commitment.
In order to register for private online lessons, you must have (or be willing to acquire) the following:

*A computer that is able to be near your instrument
*DSL, FIOS, cable or satellite internet connection
*A headset with microphone that plugs into the USB port in your computer
*Web camera
*Piano or piano keyboard with at least 76 keys

Enrolled students will also be given a membership to www.MusicLearningCommunity.com which allows them to utilize 100's of games that reinforce music theory!

If you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible so we can discuss a time that is convenient for lessons.  I'll be happy to answer any questions that you may have as well.

5) Don't Miss any of the December Activities in the Children's Department at the Niles District Library:

•During December the stories for Preschool Storytime will be about winter days, Christmas trees, sharing & giving, the librarian's favorite holiday stories and the New Year. Join this group on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. for great books and stories.
•During December the Squigglers will celebrate all the holidays with songs, coloring pages and games. This group meets on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Our theme song for December will be Jingle Bells.
•Marty Klubeck, our Chess Club instructor, will be on hand Saturday, December 5 and 19 at 9:30 a.m. He teaches the basics of Chess to beginners and challenges the experts. Bring a friend to this growing group.
•When the Jr. Garden Club meets on Saturday, December 12th at 1:00 p.m. the kids will learn how to arrange various evergreens into swags that can be used as gifts. Ribbons, bows and fancy decorations will be added to this project for professional looking door or wall hangings. This is a great opportunity for children to learn a useful craft.
•The Christmas tree in the Children's Department is extra special this year. It is decorated with ornaments from children's books. Guess how many ornaments are on the tree and the child who gets closest to the correct number will win a stack of great books and other goodies. Stop by and see this unusual tree.
•Being bored will not be allowed in the Children's Department during Christmas break.  From December 21st through January 5th, over fifteen board games will be set out to chase boredom out into the snow. During those two weeks, take-home coloring pages and crafts, raffles and other activities will abound. With over 40,000 children's books and many bean bag chairs, the Children's Department is the only place to be.

The trauma center in Kalamazoo has a program where they sell ski helmets for only $17.  The Berrien Springs Parent Partnership has a PE class in which they are doing a unit in sking/snowboarding.  On Dec 9th at 8:30am the trauma center people will be at Berrien Springs school to do a safety presentation and helmet fitting.  All homeschoolers can take advantage of this time and order a helmet.  If you are not part of the Parent Partnership you will need to pay the $17 yourself.  The helmets will be picked up a few days later and brought to Berrien Springs, where you can then pick yours up.  There are several sizes and six different colors of helmets.  Please let Sharon Haynes know if you are coming, so they can move to a larger room if necessary.  Her number is 269 429-4004.

Berrien Springs High School has their Cultural Diversity Day this coming Wednesday.  Due to the fact that they have Andrews University in their town, they have students from 27 different nations attending their schools.  This day is a celebration of that diversity.  It's like a big talent show, where the students showcase their native culture.  It could be a native dance, music, costumes, etc.  All homeschoolers are invited to attend.  It starts at 8:30am, so you should arrive at the high school by 8:10 in order to get seated before all the high school students pour in.

The Bethel College Music Department will present this year's Christmas concert "The Whole World Rejoices" at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4 and again at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center Auditorium at Bethel College.

This year's multicultural concert will feature performances by the Concert Choir, Women's Chorale, The Collegians, Voices of Triumph, Chamber Orchestra and Marilynn Ham. A diverse repertoire in many languages will proclaim spiritual riches and truth through music as well as celebrate the season. "Betelehemu," "The First Nowell," "Gesu Bambino" and "Sussex Carol" are just a few of the pieces that will be performed.

"We have a tradition of providing a meaningful Christmas concert to the community every year. It is both an educational and worship experience. Our hope this year is that by singing Christmas carols and pieces from other countries that we'll display more of a sense of global celebration," said Director Robert Ham.

All are encouraged to attend. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available through the ticket office at 574.807.7080. The Dec. 5 concert at 7:30 p.m. will be interpreted for the d/Deaf community.

5) Any spellers out there?

The HUB is considering putting on a local competition for the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Niles.  The top three spellers would move on to the regional level.  This is for Michigan students in grades 5 - 8 who are under the age of 15.  The cost would be $10/student.  If you are interested please contact Kathy Joyce ASAP at 269 695-1654.  In next week's update we will announce whether we had enough interest.

6) Elder Beerman fundraiser

Elder Beerman stores have a Community Day on Saturday, November 14th.   The HUB is selling $10 coupons for $5.  The coupons can only be used on that day, and up to five of them can be used on one item.  The item can be either sale priced or regular price.  Thus, a $50 item can be purchased for $25.  There are Elder Beerman stores in Benton Harbor and Ellkhart.  If you'd like to purchase some of the coupons from us, contact Kathy Joyce at 269 695-1654.

7) Contest info available at the HUB web site

We've added a section to our web site where we will post info on contests.  We'll be sifting through many of them to find the ones that are useful educationally or just look like lots of fun, and have good prizes, or (for older students) will be good on a transcript.  Go to www.hshub.org to check it out.  We've started with 2 English, 1 Math, and 2 Art contests.  There is a brief description of each contest, along with a link to the web site for each contest.

If you find a contest you think we should post, please send the info to homeschoolhub@yahoo.com.

8) Thank you to local businesses supporting homeschoolers
The players and parents of the Mishawaka Athletic Club would like to thank the following businesses for sponsoring home school athletics in our area. A great way to save your labels is by downloading the easy to save label sheets.  When you save and attach 19 label UPC's from participating products Campbell's will give you the 20th free!

All of us here at the Homeschool Hub thank you for your contributions to our programs.  Without you we would not be able to offer our help, support and services to homeschool families in our areas and even nationwide!

2) Calling all photographers! Entry forms for the "Life in Michiana" photography exhibit are now available as downloadable pdf files from our website at http://libraryforlife.org/photoexhibit.  They will also be available in hard copy form from any branch of the St. Joseph County Public  Library.  Photo entries will be accepted on the 2nd floor of the Main library from Nov. 16 to Dec. 15.

Can't wait to see what the creative minds of Michiana  youth have in store for us this year --- in the way of photography that is.

3)  Sarah Hageman now has openings in her schedule to teach more piano students!  She teaches on Tuesdays and Thursdays at her home in Buchanan and currently has openings on Thursdays from 11am-12pm or from 1pm-2:30pm.  (If another time, or Tuesday works better she may be able to rearrange to fit you in.)  Fees are $12 for a weekly half hour lesson; $24 for a weekly hour lesson. Students will be given weekly practice assignments at each lesson and are expected to practice at home between lessons.  Emphasis in lessons will be on learning to sight-read music, but Sarah will also teach chording in addition to sight reading if the student desires.  Sarah has 15 years of piano teaching experience, has taught all levels and ages, and has bachelors degree in Music Education.  She also has experience in teaching violin and will consider teaching beginning violin students.  Prices are the same.

4) Beginners' Basketball

5) Anycollege.com is a free online resource for college bound high school students as well as teachers and guidance counselors. We offer two scholarships through the website that your home school and your students are eligible for.

The first is for high schools who work with students helping them find their career path. This one is $1,000 and drawn twice a year, and the winner can use the money however best benefits the school. (Info here:

https://www.anycollege.com/hsmember/registration.cfm ) Once you register you are eligible for all of our future drawings! We will also send you some free posters, etc. for our student scholarships. Multiple teachers/staff may enter for additional chances to win.
The other is for college bound high school students: $2,000 drawn four times a year. (Found here: https://www.anycollege.com/scholarship.cfm )

We also run periodic other scholarship contests throughout the year, please watch our website or blog for details.

Go here to enter your school in the drawing for $1,000 and receive a packet of information about our student scholarships: http://www.anycollege.com/hsmember/registration.cfm  (Everything is free and we won't SPAM you, don't worry!)
You can find more information about our company here: https://www.anycollege.com/hsmember/ as well as career search resources and access to our college search.

AnyCollege.com lists over 5,500 accredited colleges and universities, giving each individual student options to fit their post-secondary needs. AnyCollege.com provides colleges with their own private access code that allows them to update their school's information throughout the year. This provides the most current and complete college information available to students and those helping them as the information listed is coming directly from the college itself!

We understand that it is important for students to find a college with the right "fit", so we have tried to make it as easy as possible for students to find the college that will be perfect. With over 5,500 colleges in the United States alone there are many options for students, and our mission is to help them find and connect with the perfect one.

6) I am pleased to announce that Bethel College will again be hosting our annual Blaise Pascal High School Mathematics Competition.  This competition for Michiana area high school students combines standard mathematics contest problems with several history of mathematics questions.

The exam will take place at Bethel College on Saturday, November 21.  The exam itself will consist of 45 multiple-choice questions, and students will have 90 minutes to work on the exam.

Individual and team awards will be given, some of which include substantial scholarship money.  (Members of the various participating home school communities will be grouped together for the team portion of the competition.)  In addition, the college will conduct several random drawings among registered students for prizes, including iTunes gift cards.
We look forward to having you participate this year!  Anyone interested should fill out a registration form and return it by November 7 (see below for link).  Because of current economic constraints you may be experiencing, we are offering this contest free of charge for those who register by November 7; no registration fee will be required.  Those who register after that date will have to pay $2 per student registering.  We will not be providing lunch, so you should make plans for lunch between the competition and the awards ceremony.  Many restaurants are available in the area, as well as some on-campus options.

You may access forms directly from our department website at the following link: http://www.bethelcollege.edu/academics/undergrad/mathcomp/competition/
A map of the college campus is available at the following link:   http://www.bethelcollege.edu/about/maps.php   Should you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact Robert Myers by phone at (574)257-3524 or by email at robert.myers@bethelcollege.edu
Again, please forward this information to members of your home school communities.  We hope to see many of you on November 21!

7) Homeschool high schooler would like to try her hand at directing a small group of musicians.  She is looking for high schoolers with at least 4-5 years experience with their instruments.  Her plan is to lead a quartet or quintet composed of flute, clarinet, violin and cello players.  If interested, please contact Sara at 269-357-3848 or 269-683-7223.

United Way is partnering with school districts, preschool programs and child care centers in Berrien and Cass Counties to bring in volunteers to read to children and do activities to promote literacy.  Studies show that early literacy is crucial if children are going to succeed in school.   The goal is to have volunteers interact with the children to get them excited about literacy.

United Way is looking for volunteers willing to spend a day or a portion of their day working with children and promoting literacy through reading, activities and play.  This event has been organized to be more considerate of employees and employers time in that they are focusing on specific communities on one particular day.  Each school district in Berrien and Cass County has been assigned one specific day when they will have volunteer readers in their community during the dates of October 19th - October 22nd.
