GENERAL INTEREST

G1) Brain Warmer Upper
G2) Presidential Candidate Interviews on Homeschooling
G3) Animated Bird Migration Map

G1) Brain Warmer Upper

What are four things that have an "eye" but cannot see?

Answer to last week's puzzle:
Light

G2) Presidential Candidate Interviews on Homeschooling

HSLDA has invited all the presidential candidates to be interviewed on homeschooling and  issues of concern to homeschoolers.  So far, they have recorded interviews with Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and Ben Carson.  This might be an interesting resource for a civics/governemnt lesson or unit.

They can be found here:  http://www.hslda.org/docs/hshb/archive.aspx#2016

G3) Animated Bird Migration Map

Here is a fascinating set of maps showing the migration movements of over 100 species of birds.  This map just has dots representing each species' location throughout the year:

This one has numbers representing each species so you can see which ones are where (the numbers can be hard to track):

1)  Houseparenting Positions at New Song Mission

Dear Friends,

New Song is an emerging Christ-centered community campus for at-risk kids located on 100 beautiful acres in the scenic hills of Brown County, Indiana. By God's grace, phase one of our campus construction is nearly completed, including:

All of our campus infrastructure (roads, bridge, utilities, etc.)
2 of 3 large campus homes (the 3rd home is 90% completed)
      A centralized recreational park
      A two-acre pond

We are currently seeking two missionary couples to serve as houseparents at New Song, to the glory of God and for the sake of fatherless, impoverished children and youth. The main responsibility of New Song Mission houseparents is to provide a safe, loving home environment to the kids in their care. Houseparents will live out their Christian values among the children and will lead lifestyles that model positive Christian character.

Houseparents serve as missionaries on campus, raising children in a gentle, caring way and helping the ministry in many other ways. To the children, houseparents are tender and patient caregivers, Christ-like role models, educational supporters, and spiritual mentors, providing structure and teaching life principles and moral values that will help each child live to their highest, godly potential. Houseparents work as a part of a collaborative team and also help out with some ministry needs that are not directly related to houseparenting.

Houseparents must have a close walk with the Lord so they can rely on the special strength, patience, and wisdom that only God can provide. They must be flexible, patient, and open to learning, having teachable hearts so that they can grow in their role. In addition, houseparents must enjoy being a part of a community since they will work collaboratively with other houseparents, teachers, staff members, and volunteers to facilitate the success of the entire ministry. As a campus community, New Song has a framework of policies, procedures, and a philosophy of care that guides all of our staff members.

If you are interested in learning more about houseparenting at New Song, we would love to talk with you! For more information you may visit us at www.NewSongMission.org/houseparent, or email New Song's Executive Director, Bob Schloss, at RSchloss@NewSongMission.org. May God richly bless you as you seek and serve Him!

2) Internationally Acclaimed Deaf Performing Artist Offers Workshop

Peter S. Cook, an internationally reputed Deaf performing artist, will present an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting workshop, "Personal Experience in ASL Discourse," at Bethel College on March 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Cook incorporates ASL, pantomime, storytelling, acting and movement into his performances. He has traveled extensively around the country and abroad to promote ASL literature, and he teaches in the ASL-English Interpretation Department at Columbia College in Chicago, Ill.

Advanced ASL students, interpreters and Deaf community members are welcome to attend and have the opportunity to earn .35 Continuing Education Units for attending. The cost is $10 at the door, and the workshop will be held in room 415 of the Miller/Moore Academic Center on Bethel's campus. Voice interpretation will not be provided.

Bethel is one of only seven Christian colleges to offer a Sign Language Interpreting major. For six years in a row, 100 percent of the program's graduates have passed the national interpreter certification written exam.

5) iGovern Camps for Teens

Dear Friends,

God has powerful plans for today's young people. In a time where many de-value or attempt to hijack the potential of teens, we at Generation Joshua seek to build into them, help them discover their God-given purpose, and be a voice of encouragment in their lives.

With that in mind, we are thrilled to announce that registration is open for all of our 2016 iGovern camps!

iGovern is a week-long summer camp for teens with a focus on leadership, American government, and their walk with Christ.

Throughout the week, students will learn how our government was designed to work, how it actually works, and how they can start making a difference today.

All of this is taught in the context of a highly involved simulation that puts the teens in places of leadership and responsibility in the United States government (or the governments of other nations) during a complex international situation. Students can attend camp as members of Congress, executive branch officials, or foreign ambassadors. They will learn about the interaeen the House and Senate, the power and limitations of the executive branch, and how international events can impact our laws and policy at home.

The rest of the week is rounded out with informative classes, exciting fieldtrips, inspiring speakers, encouraging chapel messages, and plenty of fun and games.

The unique thing about our program is that our camps are designed to meet each student right where they are. Whether they are a lifelong political junkie or are learning about government for the first time, they will be plugged into the scenario, and their knowledge will be expanded. We know that this approach works because the students keep coming back for more.

As parents, we often become cynical when we read today's news headlines. But I encourage you to remember the words of President Reagan. He reminded us during an era of moral, political, and cultural corruption that "America's best days are yet to come."

The future of America is in the hands of the next generation. We are committed to investing in that future. And that's why I invite you to send your student to iGovern this year.

We have three amazing camps in two stunning locations. For more information or to sign up, please see website: http://www.generationjoshua.org/dnn/Experience/iGoverntheChoice/tabid/554/Default.aspx

If you don't have a teenager who is able to attend this year, please consider donating to the iGovern scholarship fund. Your investment makes it possible for other students to come who couldn't otherwise afford it. You can donate by clicking here or by calling our office toll-free at 1 (877) 338-8803.

Sincerely,
Joel Grewe

6) YMCA Storer Camps

Hello Homeschool Families:

My name is Nancy Burger, the Director of Outdoor Education, here at YMCA Storer Camps and I wanted to personally invite you to our Homeschooler Days here at Storer.  There is still room in either of our two dates;  Monday, March 21 or Monday, November 7.  Both days will offer plenty of fun ways to get your children outdoors, explore our camp and be with other homeschool children.  Activities include visiting our hands on nature center, an 1850's pioneer barn and small animal learning center.  Older children will travel to our brand new Net Zero Energy Experience Lab while younger children will visit our horse barn and get a pony ride.

See the attached flyer with all the information and registration details.  Please contact me if I can answer any questions you may have about these special Homeschooler Days or would like a personal tour of our camp prior to the event.  Hope to see everyone out here at camp soon!

7) Bethel College presents spring musical, "Mary Poppins"

The Bethel College Theatre Department presents its annual spring musical, "Mary Poppins," based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film. Performances are Thursday, March 17 and Friday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center – Auditorium. Tickets go on sale Feb. 15.

One of the most popular Disney movies of all time is capturing hearts in a whole new way, as a practically perfect musical. Jack-of-all-trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren't the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that, "Anything can happen, if you let it."

Purchase tickets online at Tickets.BethelCollege.edu or call the ticket office at 574.807.7080, Monday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. The performance on Friday, March 18, will be interpreted for the Deaf community. The cost is $18 for adults, $15 for students and seniors, and $10 for children 10 and under.

Follow the Bethel College Theatre Department on Facebook (Facebook.com/BethelTheatre), Twitter (Twitter.com/TheatreAtBethel) and Instagram (Instagram.com/BethelCollegeTheatre) to see updates on rehearsals and production for the play.
