Art and Culture Across the Curriculum is offered in eight sessions (six afternoons, and two full days) as follows, with the final unit project due by July 26th:

We will spend most of our time in South Bend area museums exploring their resources, participating in inquiry activities, and creating materials for your final unit project--an arts integrated unit for your own fall curriculum. This is your opportunity to create that unit you've always dreamed of but never took the time to put together. Be ready to start the school year with dynamic and fun activities you and your students will love! We will use inquiry activities and lesson planning tools including Harvard's Project MUSE, storytelling, and the South Bend Regional Museum's new "Lesson Starters."  You will take away a broad collection of classroom resources from area museums. This class is also open to home schoolers and non-teachers who are committed to bringing arts and culture to their work and personal communities. Bring a friend!

3) MCAC WILDCATS

MCAC Wildcats is now open for new basketball players.  If you are a boy or girl (4th grade to 12th) and would like to play basketball, email Dana DoBrodt at hiddeneagles@att.net. The Wildcats have teams for elementary up to varsity.  We will have open gyms starting this summer and start official practices late fall. 4) The City of Elkhart's Recycled Art Contest is going to be held on Friday, July 23, 2010.  The Elkhart Environmental Division is holding the Recycled Art Contest at EnviroFest, our annual environmental festival being held at the Elkhart Wellfield Botanical Gardens. 
 
You can enter in one or both of two categories: 1) traditional art (such as paintings, photography, and mixed media) or (2) "recycled art", which must be constructed of at least 70% reusable or natural materials (such as bottle caps, scrap metal, or natural fibers).  We ask artists to please submit only one entry per medium.  The Art Contest is open to people of all ages.  Tables will be provided but space is limited.  Registration for ms must be submitted by July 15th, 2010.

5) Voice or Piano Lessons

My name is Renee Strasburg.  I will be graduating high school this May and would enjoy the opportunity to teach voice or piano to anyone who may be interested starting as soon as possible.  I have taken piano lessons for eleven years and plan to major in piano proficiency at Pensacola Christian College starting in the fall.  I have also had voice lessons through the Children's Choir of Michiana and Vesper Chorale for the past eight years.  For information on rates and to schedule an appointment, please email me at rjstrasburg@netscape.com or call me at 574-339-4253.  Thanks!
 

6) Music classes are being offered this summer at "The Music Academies", 115 North 3rd Street, Niles.


Beginning classes are a great way for the parents and students to learn if they are interested in a particular instrument and what they can perform within a short period of time. Cost of classes per student is $100.00 for ten weeks.  Fees include lesson books, proper playing techniques on each particular instrument, how to care for instruments, theory papers, handouts for classes and a recital at the end of the 10 weeks.  Sign up0s begin May 4 and run until June 14. 

Classes begin June 14 and run through August 19.

Learn to play the keyboard: Monday 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Beginning June 14, or Friday 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. beginning June 18.  Students learn to read music, music theory and music history and will have songs to play the first day. Recital at the end of the first 10 weeks.


Learn to play the Guitar: Wednesday 10:30 - 11:15 a.m. Beginning class June 16, or Thursday 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. beginning June 17.
Students will learn to play acoustic classical guitar, play melodies and chords, read music and tabs. Recital at the end of first 10 weeks.


Learn to play a String instrument: Monday 1:30 - 2:30 classes begin June 14
Learn to play the violin, viola, or cello in a 10 week session.


Summer Orchestra: Have you ever been interested in performing with an orchestra?
Here is the opportunity to play with a community Home school Orchestra. Two times are being offered for those interested in performing with the Home school Orchestra.  Session will meet Thursday mornings 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. or Thursday afternoon 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. Cost for those interested in participating in the orchestra is $60.00 dollars. Sessions will begin June 17 with a final summer concert August 5. Open to those who already play instruments which include woodwinds, strings, brass and percussion. All classes are open to adults as well as students. This is a great opportunity to have a family activity that is fun and instructional at the same time. Students will need to have their own instruments to play on or rental instruments are available.

Discounts are given for more than one family member interested in classes. Private lessons are also available for piano, violin, viola, cello and guitar.

7) Camp Fire USA, a youth development non-profit, has two news items for homeschoolers and their parents:
 
1 - Parent volunteers at day camp Tawanchi at Merrifield park in Mishawaka - they are seeking engaged parents to serve as counselors.  In exchange for your gift of time serving local youth, you can provide up to two children, ages 5-16, the camp experience for free each week you counsel.  
 
2 - Enrichment options at overnight camp Tannadoonah on Birch Lake in Vandalia, MI.  We have traditional offerings of arts and crafts, drama, music, sports and games, aquatic activities and a week of social interactions.  This year we are offering several enrichment options - specific sports, and science exploration, led by volunteer high school science teachers.  And we have offer options for digital photography, iron chefs and advanced nature.

8) New Creations Offers 2010 Summer Art Camps in the Michiana Area for Students in Grades 1-12.
 
 
Gloria Seitz, a certified K-12 art teacher, will be hosting summer art camps for students. The classes will meet for four days in one week, for 1 ½ hours each day. Students will receive 6 hours of concentrated art instruction in various mediums including clay, printmaking, drawing and painting. Adults are welcome to participate at the high school level. An art festival will be held the last half hour of class on the last day of the class.
 
 
ALL ART CAMP TIMES are as follows:  Ages 6-10 will meet at 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m. Ages 9-13 will meet from 12:30-2 p.m. and 7th grade–adult will meet from 2:30-4p.m.
 
ART CAMP #1: LOCATION: HOBBY LOBBY in Mishawaka. DATES: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday June 22,23,24,25. Room location: far right wall near fabrics.
 
ART CAMP #2: LOCATION: COMMUNITY EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH 120 E. Bertrand Rd., Niles, MI. DATES: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday June28, 29, 30, and July 1. Room location: enter through the main (east) entrance and go left through the gym then right up the stairs to the classroom.
 
ART CAMP #3: LOCATION: THE OAKS AT SOUTH PAW FARM located  at 16323 Roosevelt Rd. just west of hwy. #331 on the south side of Mishawaka south of the 20 bypass. DATES: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, July 20, 21, 22, and 23.
 
 
THE COST for the 6 hours of class is $55 for the first child and $50 for each additional child.  You will save $5 on the total cost if you pay one week before class begins. You can send the check to Gloria at 18285 Amberly Ln. South Bend, IN 46637. Cost includes a $10 supply fee (except sketch book, erasers,  pencils and white cotton T shirt. 9) Calling all SUPER VOLUNTEERS who would like to have a SUPER DAY with SUPER KIDS!
 
WHAT:     Super Day for Super Kids
WHEN:     Wednesday, May 26, 10 am to 2 pm
WHERE:    Lewis Cass ISD in Cassopolis
WHY:      Children come from all over the county to enjoy train rides, hay rides, pedal cars, trucks, tractors, bouncy house and food. 
WHAT WILL YOU GET OUT OF IT? Smiles from the children, a time to enjoy the outdoors, the sunshine and a free lunch.

The Niles Parks Board is coordinating a Clean-up on Saturday, May 15th.  Volunteers will meet at the Amphitheater in Riverfront Park at 9 am as a group and receive maps, bags, gloves and assignments. The assignments will include parks throughout the city in addition to Riverfront Park .   It will be a great day to join other volunteers and clean up the trash, weeds, and do what needs to be done to get ready for people to enjoy the parks this summer.

10) Bethel College Offers Summer Academic Camps
 
Bethel will offer its third annual Academic Camps taught by Bethel professors during the months of June and July. The cost per camper is $125. Academic camps include:
 
Art with the Masters I and II
July 19-23 (Masters I) and July 26-30 (Masters II)
Ages 7-10 meet from 9 a.m. – noon
Learn how to create your own work by studying the work of the Masters and using a variety of art materials such as clay, paint, dye, ink, collage and more.
 
Creative Writing: Writing Young Adult Fiction
July 19-23
Ages 11-15 meet from 9 a.m. – noon
Start your own young adult novel! Explore the world of fiction for young adults and adolescents, learning how to plot scenes and build suspense.
 
Digital Photography
June 21-25
Ages 11-15 meet from 9 a.m. – noon
Learn about the history of photography while creating interesting photographs using Photoshop techniques and changing the digital images to artwork through digital collage.
 
Ecology: Understanding Animals and Ecosystems
June 21-25
Ages 9-14 meet from 9 a.m. – noon
Learn the names of animals common in Northern Indiana and how they interact to form ecosystems. Perform experiments involving the fox squirrels on the Bethel College campus and learn to bird watch using field guides and binoculars (provided) to learn about birds feeding and nesting on campus.
 
Math, Science and Origami
July 19-23
Ages 10-14 meet from 9 a.m. – noon
Learn about origami using the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. You'll even see some computer tools that origami experts use to help them construct very advanced figures.  If you love folding, art, math, science, or just having a good time, you'll love participating in this class!

11) Join the Bethel College department of theatre for an evening of comedy and delicious sweets as they present "Christmas Belles" on June 17, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bethel College Dining Commons. It's part of the 16th annual Dessert Theater.
 
The evening will begin with a dessert buffet of wonderful sweets ranging from chocolate fudge tortes to crème brulee to caramel cheesecake. Following, there will be a musical package and then the play, directed by Stacy Bone. 
 
"Christmas Belles" is written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten and is the sequel to the play performed last year at the Dessert Theatre, "Dearly Beloved." It is a continuation of the story performed last summer, featuring the Futrelle sisters during Christmastime in the small town of Fayro, Texas. Each of the sisters has her own problems and each is just as dramatic as their names: Frankie, Twink and Honey Raye. But in true Futrelle fashion, the feuding sisters find a way to pull together in order to present a Christmas program the citizens of Fayro will never forget. Their hilarious holiday journey through a misadventure-filled Christmas Eve is guaranteed to bring joy to your world!
 
"Dessert Theatre is always a highlight of the summer for a wonderful evening of comedy, desserts and music," says Barb Franklin, theater department secretary and box office manager. "We have groups that come back year after year for this delightful evening of entertainment."
 
For tickets or more information, call the ticket office at 574.807.7080, Mon. - Fri. 1-5 p.m. The cost is $18 for adults, $16 for seniors and $15 for groups of 16 or more. This includes dessert, the play and a musical package.  Tickets go on sale May 24.

LMC Middle School Summer Robot Camp
 
This fun and educational camp is designed for students entering grades 5-9 in the fall.  This is a five-day fun and creative learning experience to keep kids busy during the summer. Kids work in pairs to solve challenges by building and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms (RCX) Robotics Invention System.  In addition to having fun, participants learn about mechanical and software design, problem solving, and teamwork skills.  Student teams will complete several projects and mini challenges.  Build your own programmable robot!  Learn some computer programming to control your robot!
 
*  Minimum age is 9 (recommended for ages 9 - 14).  No previous experience required.
*  Students will have a partner for most activities, and are expected to cooperate and share well.  Each day includes structured lessons and activities to practice construction and programming skills.

A deposit of $75 is required to hold a spot in either class.  Below are the age/grade levels we believe are appropriate for the courses we offer.  There are overlaps allowing for difference in maturity, science interests and math skill level prior to taking a course.

Anthony Beer is accepting new students of all ages in the South Bend , Mishawaka , Granger and Niles area.  His studio offers a wide range of opportunities for students to excel with his/her skills at the piano. The Studio exposes each student to many different styles of music, ranging from classical, jazz, religious and contemporary music. This enhances their musical knowledge in theory,music history and their musicianship and performance skills. His goal as a teacher is to nurture each student and to help them explore the beauty and love of music. He encourages all students to support the arts in their community.
