G1) Brain Warmer Upper

What does man love more than life,
fear more then death or mortal strife,
what the poor have the rich require,
and all contented men desire.
What misers spend and spendthrifts save
and all men carry to the grave?

Answer to the last puzzle:
Stars

G2) Music Appreciation

For anyone looking for a music appreciation/music history course, here is info on one created by a homeschool dad.

G3) Free-to-try HTML class

Hi, I wanted to reach out to you because we have another round of the 'HTML 101 for Homeschoolers' online class coming up.

This one is starting November 7th (and again on December 5th) and I wanted to share the link in case some of your parents might be interested in it for their kids.

 http://www.OlearyAcademy.com/HTMLClass?from=HSHUB

There's no charge for parents and kids to start and explore the class to see if they like it; it's self-paced (but moderated with feedback and a certificate), and completely online.

Thanks in advance for sharing (and please let me know if you have any suggestions for helping connect other homeschool parents to this class)!

G5) 2016-2017 National History Bee

Welcome! This is your formal invitation to join schools and home schooling families all over the country in an exciting and inspiring academic competition – The 2016-2017 National History Bee!

Why a History Bee?

Ever notice how even kids who are normally couch potatoes will be willing, even eager, to train for a competitive sport like football? The chance of measuring their strength, skill and ability against that of their peers is always an effective motivator for youngsters. Just consider the popularity of recitals for young musicians and dancers, intermural sports and honor rolls. Now the National History Bee offers a goal that students can achieve by studying and understanding the history of the United States and other countries.  It's an exciting way to motivate an enthusiastic interest in one of the most important areas of study. And all home schooled students can participate FREE of charge.

Here's just one example of a real life success story.

We recently heard from a parent whose son participated in the National History Bee in Nebraska a few years back.  Like most home school parents, she wanted him not only to do well, but also to enjoy the process of learning.  History lessons however, seemed to present a special challenge. Although she tried hard to make them interesting, her seventh grade son often found it hard to stay focused and interested. Fortunately, his participation in the National History Bee changed all that.  Because he wanted to do well in the competition, he was willing and eventually, even eager, to dive deeper into his studies.  He started trying to anticipate the questions that would be asked based on the material he was learning. Because the competition provided relevance to what, in his eyes, was boring information, it provoked his curiosity and sense of enjoyment about his studies in a way he hadn't experienced before.  This young scholar is now in 9th grade and already preparing to take the AP US History Exam during his sophomore year.

The National History Bee reflects what students are currently studying.

The questions are based on the fifth through eighth grade social studies curricula used by schools around the country. All of the questions are written and edited by history teachers, professors and other social studies educators and deal with topics and information students are currently covering in their class work.

Here's how the competition works:

•    Students take an Online Exam supervised by their parents
All participants in the National History Bee must take an Online Qualifying Exam.  This is the same
test that children take in the classroom and can be prepared for with study guides and practice tests
     ordered through our website www.aceqb.com/historybee

•    Top Students Participate in One of 39 Regional Finals Around the Country
These face-to-face events give students the chance to meet, compete and network with each other.

•    Regional Winners Compete for the Championship in the National Finals
The winners meet to compete for the 2016-2017National History Bee Championship.

The National History Bee makes it as easy as possible for students to participate whether they attend a traditional school or are taught at home. We're sure that your members will find this event well worth their time and effort. Not only does it help empower individual students, it also expands the ways your member families can connect with a wider educational community.  And remember, home schooled applicants can register for FREE!

Help us demonstrate how competitive home schooled children can be.

We hope you'll encourage your members to visit www.aceqb.com/historybee to find out more about this program now. Registration begins NOW and ends on December 18, 2016.  They can register online anytime during that period. Of course, the sooner they register, the sooner their children can start preparing to compete for the 2016-2017 National History Bee Championship! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at (850-888-8223) or by email at info@aceqb.com.

Thank you for helping us make the National History Bee accessible to home schooled scholars. We know that your organization, members and indeed, the whole community, will find it a worthwhile endeavor.

Yours,
Eric Huff, M.Ed.

3) Bethel College presents: "Anne of Green Gables"

The Bethel College Theatre Department presents "Anne of Green Gables," adapted by Sylvia Ashby from the novel by L. M. Montgomery. Performances are Thursday, Nov. 10 and Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center – Auditorium.

A refreshing, contemporary telling of the classic story, Marilla and her warm-hearted brother Matthew hoped to adopt a boy to work on their farm. But the orphanage sends young, freckled Anne by mistake, and their lives will never be the same. Her warmth and wit affects everyone around her – even, eventually, the cold Marilla! We follow Anne through her rebellious years, her transformation into a young woman, and her romantic pairing with Gilbert. This play has been charming audiences around the world. Anne of Green Gables (Ashby Non-Musical) is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, INC.

Purchase tickets online at BethelCollege.edu/Tickets or call the ticket office at 574.807.7080, Monday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. The performance on Friday, Nov. 11 will be interpreted for the Deaf community. The cost is $15 for adults, $13 for students and seniors, and $10 for children 10 and under.

G3) Free Bird Biology Lesson

Try one lesson free of a college-level, self-paced course called Ornithology: Comprehensive Bird Biology. It is a total makeover of its predecessor, the Lab's Home Study Course in Bird Biology, which has been offered for more than 40 years.

"Whether you are a home-school family, a teenager fascinated by nature, a mid-career professional with a weekend hobby, or a retiree looking for new insights about the birds out your window, this course and these materials will enrich your life beyond measure," said Cornell Lab director John W. Fitzpatrick.

The course is based on the all-new third edition of the Handbook of Bird Biology (required) and enhanced by a wealth of online materials including videos, interactive animations, quizzes, and additional reading, all presented through the Lab's online educational site called Bird Academy.

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1)  SMWC Workshops Target Girls for Math and Science Exploration
2) Deep River Waterpark Reading Program
3) Free Educational Material

1)  SMWC Workshops Target Girls for Math and Science Exploration

A day of hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) will be offered at the Expanding Your Horizons event for middle school girls. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will host this day of energy and enthusiasm on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Through exciting and interactive workshops, participants learn that studying STEM can be fun. The conference nurtures girls' interest in science and math courses to inspire them to consider careers
in STEM.

Nine workshops led by local female mathematicians, engineers and scientists offer topics on chemistry, computer coding, horse anatomy, robotics and more. These professionals will also relate how they use math and science in their careers.

Keynote speaker, Robyn King, serves as the WTWO/WAWV morning and midday meteorologist. At an early age, she had a passion for weather. King graduated from the University of South Alabama majoring in meteorology with a minor in math.

STEM careers are in high demand. However, women graduates in STEM fields are underrepresented. According to the National Science and Engineering Indicators, women make up half of the total U.S. college-educated workforce, but only 29 percent of the science and engineering workforce.

The Expanding Your Horizons workshops encourage and motivate girls to pursue their interest in STEM careers.  The fostering of math and science at an early age piques their interest and expand girls' knowledge and ability.

The $20 registration fee includes two workshops and lunch. To learn about all the sessions and to register, visit www.smwc.edu/eyh.
