MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1) CONNECTIONS The Brain Development Seminar
2)  Diary of Anne Frank Performance--TONIGHT!

1) CONNECTIONS The Brain Development Seminar

Learn how to improve and even eliminate ADD/ADHD, autism, sensory processing delays, academic and behavioral issues and more through movements that develop the brain.

Good evening,

My name is Virginia Largent.  I am a Christian neurological reorganization specialist, home school advocate and director of the Virginia Beach School of the Arts. Neurological reorganization is a process which develops and connects brain regions in response to sensory motor activities. In plain English, this changes kids' brains.

Add/ADHD, autism, academic, behavioral, emotional and social delays are all caused by parts of the brain not being fully connected or mature. When these delays are present because of genetics, the environment or injury, the brain can actually be changed and the connections made so these symptoms improve and many times even go away. We have children who are getting their diagnosis reversed, coming off of medication under a Dr's supervision, grades going from C's,'D's, and F's to A's and B's. Parents are reporting the total absence of nuclear meltdowns after just 3 weeks of doing these specific movements.

Marian University at St. Vincent Health is bringing us in to train parents of special needs kids how to do this. Connections: The Brain Development Seminar will be presented at Marian University August 1 & 2. Friday night is 7-9 pm, Saturday is 9 am – 3 pm

Here is a link to our website Connections: The Brain Development Seminar.
You will find many, many testimonials from MD's, professionals and stay home moms.

2)  Diary of Anne Frank Performance--TONIGHT!

On Friday, May 16, the senior class at Trinity School will present The Diary of Anne Frank. The play, written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, is based on the book, The Diary of Anne Frank.  The Frank family was a Jewish family living in Amsterdam.  The Dutch hid a number of Jewish families from the Nazi's after the Germans occupied Holland during World War II.  The play covers the time from July of 1942 until June of 1944, when the Frank family, the Van Daans and a Mr. Albert Dussel went into hiding in an attic of a business owned by Otto Frank to esc. The play covers the tensions of the people living together for two years in hiding. Even though this was such a dark time in history, the play is full of warmth, humor and pity.

The public performance is Friday, May 16, at 7:30 in the evening in the Trinity School Auditorium. The cost of admission is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for students and children and $16.00 for a family.

1) INCH Homeschool Convention

We are almost upon our 2014 INCH Homeschool Convention in Lansing, next week, May 15-17, 2014. There is STILL TIME to register and attend this convention.  http://conference.homeschoolmichigan.org/

2)  Help a High School Exchange Student Next School Year

Hello!

My name is Stefanie Clark and I have a wonderful learning opportunity to share with you. I work with a non-profit organization called CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) and we work with high school foreign exchange students. I got involved in the program because I wanted to expose my children to different cultures from around the world. Little did I know that it would be so educational as well as a life changing experience!

CIEE works with students that are 15-18 years old that come from over 55 different countries and they come to the U.S. for an educational home stay for either 5 or 10 months. We are currently looking for host families in Michigan. The students typically attend the public schools in the district that the family resides with while they are in country. They come to see what it is like to live with an American family. They come with their own spending money and insurance, so you are providing them with room and meals and some transportation during their stay. Here is our website if you would like to learn more about our program http://www.ciee.org/highschool/

I have found, from experience, that hosting a student is the best way to expose your children and your family to other cultures…what better way than to learn it first hand? My son is actually traveling to Brazil to stay with my exchange son and his family.  Who would have ever guessed that we would have lifelong connections with families in different countries? It has brought the world to us!

People ask me, how does it work with families that homeschool their children and the student attends public school? Here is the response that many families have shared: "they go to school at a different school and we enjoy one another after they get home... We do our classes and they do theirs, it's not so strange!"

It was great for the exchange students to learn about the option of homeschooling because many of the countries we work with do not allow homeschooling. Some of our students have gone back and shared their experience and the positive things they learned about homeschooling from their host family with others in their country.

I would love to tell you more about this exciting experience! If you would like to find out more or see some of the amazing students we have available to share, please contact me, Stefanie Clark at sclark@ciee.org or call 877-872-0808. I would love to share more about our program and will be happy to get you in touch with our local representative in your area.

Thank you so much for your time!

Suicide Alertness for Everyone--SafeTALK is a training that prepares anyone over the age of 15 to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. As a safeTALK-trained suicide alert helper, you will be better able to:

move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss or avoid suicide; identify people who have thoughts of suicide; apply the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe) to connect a person with suicide thoughts to suicide first aid, intervention caregivers.

In only a few hours, you will learn how to provide practical help to persons with thoughts of suicide. Expect to leave safeTALK more willing and able to perform an important helping role for persons with thoughts of suicide.

6)  South Bend Blue Sox Night

May 16, 2014 at Four Winds Field will be South Bend Blue Sox Night. This family fun and educational event is a celebration of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The League was founded in 1943 by Philip K. Wrigley during World War II, and the South Bend Blue Sox were one of the original 4 teams to play in the opening season of the AAGPBL.

Gates will open at Four Winds Field at 6:30 p.m. There will be a pre-game ceremony honoring the South Bend Blue Sox at 6:40 p.m. Betsy Jochum, a member of the original 1943 South Bend Blue Sox team, will participate in the pre-game ceremony and will be available afterwards in the Concourse to sign her baseball card. Other fun activities will include taking your picture as an AAGPBL player, seeing South Bend Blue Sox reproduction uniforms and entering drawings for special prizes! Families will also be able to stay and watch the South Bend Silver Hawks play the Fort Wayne TinCaps.

We are reaching out to you because we feel that this event is especially interesting for homeschooling families. Not only is it fun for the entire family, but it is an exciting and interactive way to teach your children about important historical events in our community.

[HUBNEWSLETTER] Newsletter Addendum: Fernwood Coupon

Hello,

When I tried to find the place to download the coupon for free admission to Fernwood, I had a very hard time.  I never could find it on the Better Homes and Garden site (I don't think it is there).

Here is a direct link:

image
coupon- | National Public Gardens Day
Presented by the American Public Gardens Association 351 Longwood Road, Kennett Square, PA 19348 Ph: 610.708.3010 - Fax: 610.444.3594
Preview by Yahoo

Hopefully this will work for anyone--I had to enter an email and ZIP to get access to the link.

If it doesn't work, go to http://www.nationalpublicgardensday.org/registration/coupon-3579 and search for Fernwood.  You'll be able to get to the link from there.

(Other gardens are also available like Frederick Meijer, etc.)

G3)  Environmental Education Online

You can check out some of the highlights of educational programs for EE week, including some great opportunities for environmental learning. Below are snippets of some of the stories we've received with more info available on our website!

Program Challenges Students to Solve Invasive Species Problem Using Engineering Principles

Invasive species such as Asian carp are threatening the Great Lakes. Scientists, government and community leaders are coming together to meet the challenges and now Shedd Aquarium is calling on students to help design solutions. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago, Shedd is a leader in conservation education on local and global environmental issues...

 Bridgestone Environmental Education Classroom Habitat

Bridgestone Environmental Education Classroom Habitat (BEECH) celebrated EE Week with a few different activities designed to teach about the environment, including stream and pond water investigations, habitat identification, and recycling and composting activities!...

Crafton Elementary Habitat Garden Project

Crafton Elementary school is working toward the goal of a habitat garden on school grounds in connection with their third grade class participation in the 10,000 Islands Dolphin Project's Environmental Studies Program. The habitat garden represents an extension of the Environmental Studies Program that allows the students to become citizen scientists in their own backyard...

G4)  Join New "YardMap" Project to Create Bird Habitat

Unique citizen-science program begins in the backyard!  The backyard is far more than a place to install a pool, hold a barbecue, or toss a Frisbee. The sum of all North American yards and neighborhood green spaces equals major habitat for birds and other wildlife. Creating larger, connected patches of bird-friendly habitat is one goal of the new YardMap citizen-science project from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The project has undergone extensive testing by 10,000 users who created more than 6,700 maps. YardMap is ready for everyone and is now inviting new participants to join.  http://content.yardmap.org/

"People often think their yard is too small or too urban to impact wildlife, but that just isn't true," says YardMap project leader Rhiannon Crain. "For many plant and animal species a yard can mean the world. A butterfly can live its whole life from egg through caterpillar to butterfly in one person's yard, so it matters quite a lot if the owner uses pesticides."

After signing up for the free online project, participants zoom in on satellite images to construct maps of their yards, local parks, workplaces, local cemeteries, or any other green space they know well. They mark the maps to show areas of lawn, buildings, native plants, feeders, and other landscape features. Scientists and participants can see how the spaces connect to form larger landscapes and share information about improving habitats at home and across communities. By pairing habitat information with bird sightings, participants learn about the effects of different gardening practices at a much larger scale.

Changes don't need to be dramatic. Putting in a few native plants, moving feeders closer to windows to reduce deadly collisions, or creating a brush pile birds can use to escape from predators can all have a significant impact for local birds.

"Right now we're losing 21 million acres of habitat every 10 years to residential development," says Crain. "But we also know there are millions of people out there concerned about the environment, ready to tread more lightly on the land. Even if you're just starting your wildlife garden, we'd love to share the journey as you document your progress with YardMap."

2) Science Under Sail Trip

Hello,

My name is Jennifer and I work for a small non-profit out of Bay City that teaches environmental education to K-12 grade school group. Our program Science Under Sail, takes traditional classroom learning and performs it on the deck of a tall ship.  During a Science Under Sail program students will be able to make connections between what they learn in the classroom and the world they live in.

I'm contacting you today because I have interest from a small home school group in the Metro Detroit area that would love to participate on one of our programs.  She is currently working to recruit more participants as her group is only 12 and the ship is able to hold up to 35 students and adults.   She has a tentative date of May 21, 8:30 am.  If you or anyone you know may be interested in this trip please let me know.

Not only is it a valuable learning experience for all but it's a great place to meet other parents and students just like you!  Please let me know if you would like any more information.

Thank you,
Jennifer Acker
