G1) Bird Nest Contest

G1)  Bird Nest Contest

Contest highlights oddball bird-nest locations!  Whether you find a robin's nest on a statue or a hummingbird's nest on wind chimes, your picture of a bird nest in a funky place can win big in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Funky Nests in Funky Places contest. With nesting season underway, this contest challenges everyone to get outside and watch nature in even the most unexpected places.

"Just start looking," says Karen Purcell, who created the contest several years ago as part of the Cornell Lab's Celebrate Urban Birds citizen-science project. "Past experience has shown us you can find bird nests in the most surprising places. We've seen them in helmets, old boots, stoplights, store signs, car tires, clotheslines, mailboxes, potted plants, and even a stuffed moose head!"

The Funky Nests contest begins May 1 and lasts until June 15. Entries may be photos, videos, artwork, poems, or stories. You don't have to be a bird expert or an expert photographer. People of all ages are welcome to participate as individuals or with a class, community center, or afterschool program. Prizes include binoculars, bird feeders, cameras, an iPad, and more.

Entry deadline is June 15.  Find more information about how to find nests, approach nests without disturbing the birds, and enter the contest at www.FunkyNests.org

GENERAL INTEREST

G1) Fun Learning Tool
G2)  Everglades Video

G1) Fun Learning Tool

How Much is that Tree? You can promote active appreciation and stewardship of the environment by identifying and mapping trees, and using online software tools such as i-Tree Design which can calculate the dollar ecological value of individual trees in your yard or neighborhood.  Putting a dollar value on the environmental services of living trees takes learning and understanding about the economic value of trees far beyond assessing aesthetics, and their timber or fruit value!

How to use the i-Tree Design Software Tool

1. Identify your tree. Use an app such as Leafsnap, online tree guides (check out eNature Field Guides) or invite an expert such as a Tree Steward, Master Gardener or a forester to help.

2. Measure the tree circumference, and check the tree's location and health.

3. Enter this simple input data into the i-Tree Design tool: http://www.itreetools.org/design.php

4. The i-Tree Design software immediately calculates the overall ecological dollar value of each specific tree.  You find out the amount of stormwater runoff the tree intercepts annually, the tree's effect on air quality, and how much CO2 it mitigates. Within i-Tree Design you can then input an outline of the building footprint near a tree and calculate additional effects on a building's energy performance.

The i-Tree suite of software developed by the USDA Forest Service is free and is being used worldwide. Students as young as 8 years old can easily use the i-Tree Design tool for urban forestry analysis and environmental services assessment, while other more complex programs in the i-Tree software suite are marketed for more expert audiences of citizen scientists and urban foresters.

G2)  Everglades Video

The Arthur R. Marshall Foundation for The Everglades' Annual River of Grass Canoe Expedition allows students to experience a virtual tour of the Everglades and expand their knowledge of this unique ecosystem.

With this year's annual canoe expedition, canoe leaders and general public paddlers, including students, completed a part of the journey from past years by tracing the water flow south from the northern part of the Everglades. They started on March 9, 2013 at 20 Mile Bend Area (the northern tip of the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge) and ended after 16 miles on March 10, 2013 at the Lee Road dock of the Refuge. The paddlers viewed a variety of Everglades' habitats rarely seen, searching for signs of endangered wildlife and highlighting the dramatic changes that humans have brought to this ecosystem.

You can see a short video about the trip here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxfiKSmXmVs

G1) Red-tailed Hawk Nest Cam

G1) Red-tailed Hawk Nest Cam

Big Red and Ezra, the two Red-tailed Hawks watched by thousands last year from a live-streaming camera high above the Cornell campus, are back this year and already incubating three eggs. The hawks threw us a curve by deciding to nest in a new site—our Bird Cams team just managed to set up a camera before the eggs arrived on March 14, 17, and 20. (Picture quality is generally excellent, although viewers may see occasional brief outages as we finalize network connections over the next two weeks.) If the eggs hatch on a schedule similar to last year, start looking for fuzzy chicks around April 21.

G1) Benefits of Homeschooling

Here is an excellent recent article about the benefits of homeschooling:
http://childrensmd.org/uncategorized/why-doctors-and-lawyers-homeschool-their-children-18-reasons-why-we-have-joined-americas-fastest-growing-educational-trend/

and here is a smaller link in case that one gives you trouble:  http://tinyurl.com/dxmtdes  (Both links lead to the same webpage.)

G2)  Photo Contest

G3) Google Science Fair Event

Join us on April 12 at 1:00 p.m. for a Google Science Fair 2013 Hangout On Air featuring meteorologist Dan Satterfield who will tell us about the science behind weather. Learn more here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/cioqfo0uu54j2k94pf7thkeqc2o

G4)  Bird Video

Last year, on April 27, the expert birders on Team Sapsucker counted 264 species in a single day, tying the national record. But a single number, even a big one, doesn't do justice to such a flurry of birds. So we've condensed their 24-hour deluge into a 4-minute slideshow. From screech-owls to scrub-jays, yellow-rumps to yellowlegs, this clip shows you (almost) every bird the team recorded, hour by hour during the day. They'll be trying to beat that record this month to raise needed funds for conservation.  The video shows photos of all the species they saw.  See how many you can recognize.

Affinage How to Store and Age Cheese- 165d
Once bitten by the cheese making bug, you start getting into details of cheese well beyond merely making it. One difficult area is the storing and aging of cheese. Without access to a wide range of climates, with different temperatures and humidities, it may look impossible to be able to properly make the huge range of cheeses that are possible.
Join Barbara Jenness as she explains the world of "affinage" or the nurturing and ripening of cheese to bring out their best qualities. Barbara will explain the different conditions required for different cheeses and teach methods and equipment you can use to get the required temperatures and humidity levels to ensure the highest quality cheese.
Minimum Age: 12
d/ April 7 Sun 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Tuition: $90 Materials: $10
with Barbara Jenness

Timber Framing & Raising - 431
Enjoy the full experience of preparing timbers and raising a timber framed building. Fit mortise and tenon joints and peg them with white oak, very much like barn building 150 years ago. An engineer will discuss design elements. Skilled framers guide you through layout, boring and chiseling mortises, forming tenons, cutting wind braces, assembling bents, and finally the thrill of raising day! Enjoy real teamwork! The timber frame is frequently sold to help defray the costs of instruction. Please enroll a month in advance to allow for materials preparation.

This class will explore creative ways to use custom repoussé work as a featured design element in different metalworking & woodworking projects. We'll start with a repoussé refresher targeted at making a few simple pieces to use in class. Students with all levels of skill will have a good time and leave class with a couple of finished projects.

Sizing of rafters, floor joists, beams and posts for typical ag building applications is covered, and design tables for this use based on locally harvested timber species are provided. Bracing considerations are examined. Models – both physical and "digital" - are demonstrated as design tools. Preparation of drawings is shown as an integral part of the process, from design through execution. Joint designs and strength are focal points. Joints are broken under controlled observation and measurement to demonstrate behavior. Minimum age: 16
