MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1) Urgent request for host families
2) Volunteer Opportunities

1) Urgent request for host families

Dear Community Member-

This year more than ever we are in great need of host families for several exchange students. Please help by volunteering or by passing this to someone that may have an interest in this wonderful experience.

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in possibly hosting an exchange student for the 11/12 school year. We have students 15-18 years old from around the world that will be arriving in late August for 5 or 10 months. We need host families for these students. We have students interested in a variety of activities including  all kinds of sports, scouts, youth groups, piano, art, dance music, reading, math/science, skiing, baseball, soccer, volleyball, hiking/camping, basketball, choir, band, drawing and painting.

Without host families, we would not be able to help these students achieve their American Dream! Host families need only to provide a bed for the student and meals at home. Students can share a room with another kid. All other expenses are the student's responsibility. Host Families can consist of all make-ups such as single parent families, singles, couples with no kids, retirees, empty nesters, etc. These students make great mentors to younger children as well.

Host Families provide the following to host a student:
-          A bed for the student (students can share a room)
-          Meals at home
-          Loving, caring, environment for the student

Students come with the following:
-          Ability to speak English at a high school level
-          Complete Health Insurance
-          Spending money for anything they need including hygiene items, school supplies, clothes, long distance phone calls, etc)
-          Open mind about their American experience

We have students from all over the world including:  Australia. Brazil, Italy, Denmark, Japan, Mongolia, Spain, France, Germany, Turkey, Thailand, Colombia, Korea, Slovakia, China, Taiwan, Belgium, Mexico, and many more.

Your help is greatly appreciated, as we have several students to place with good host families! Exchange students can be a positive influence on your family, school, and community!

If you are interested and would like more information, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can give the exciting news to the student that their American dream is going to come true!

2) Volunteer Opportunities

A) Summer is coming and it is time to think about the fun things you are going to do this summer.

Join the Krasl Art Center as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of Art on the Bluff, July 9-10, 2011. What started out as a 'clothesline' art fair in 1962 with 50 artists has grown to an art fair with a national reputation.

A great way to enjoy the art fair this summer is to volunteer for a 3 hour shift.  Volunteer tasks include: water sales, sales information, kids zone, booth sitters, operations, parking, or assisting with the community mural.    The mural project is led by artist, Doug Arnholter, who will help the community paint a mural, part of the mural stays in St. Joseph and the other goes with him and is connected to one that tours the world. People are invited to make a donation to paint on one of the canvas.  People can do it because it is similar to the concept of paint by number that we did when we were kids.   Volunteers will talk with people and invite them to paint. Doug's website: muraloftheworld.com

B) Bridges to Digital Excellence (BDE)

Option 1: Computer instructor.  As you know, in order to do well in school & work and be connected with the community, knowing how to use a computer is important.  BDE takes donated computers and rehabs them to provide a free computer to a student, living in southwest Michigan , who does not have a computer in their home.  The students and their parent/guardian are required to take a computer class so they both know how to use the computer, surf the net safety, etc.

Volunteer profile:

          1)  Agree to teach at least 1 of the series of classes.
               - which are 2 Saturday classes, 4 hours each class or 4 weeknight classes, 2 hours each class.
          2)  Have basic computer skills, ability to use Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel and able to navigate the Internet (or the willingness
                to learn these skills.)
          3)  Patience and the ability to communicate.

You are welcome to visit a class to gain more information as to what is involved or assist with classes before you become an instructor.

Option 2: BDE receives computers and other electronic equipment that they recycle into new computers or separate out for parts and proper disposal.  Volunteer on Thursdays and Fridays, each week, from 10 am till 3 pm to test the various electronics that are collected, for example computers, TV's, VCR's, stereo receivers, DVD players, LCD monitors and cell phones.

Skills needed:

          1)  It is great if you have some knowledge of electronics.  If not, they will train you.
          2)  Be able to lift 50 pounds.
          3)  Be able to clean with cleaning supplies.

If you have questions or would like to get connected, contact:

G1) Petition to Help Libraries

On March 7, 2011, the publisher HarperCollins instituted an expiration policy on eBooks that are licensed to libraries. Under this new arrangement, eBooks would "self-destruct" after being checked out 26 times. This would require libraries to re-purchase the ebook if they wanted to continue to make it available. Libraries across the country are boycotting future purchases of HarperCollins ebooks, but our voices alone will not change their policy. We need your help.

By day, Andy Woodworth is a mild-mannered librarian. By night, he's still a librarian, just less mild-mannered.  Andy is kind of famous in the librarian community, mostly for getting *the Old Spice guy* to do a video about how great libraries are, and unsuccessfully campaigning to get Ben & Jerry's to create a flavor called the "Gooey Decimal System." (If you don't get the pun, just ask someone ten years older.)

Oh, and now he's helping lead the charge in a fight against NewsCorp, one of the world's most powerful companies.

See, more and more libraries are beginning to buy ebooks, like those read on a Kindle or similar device. They're programmed to be like normal books--lent out to one reader at a time, returned, and downloaded by another reader. It's simple, and especially great for working parents or the disabled who have a hard time making it to a library.

But publishing giant HarperCollins (owned by NewsCorp) is trying to force libraries to only buy ebooks that **literally self-destruct after the 26th reader** in an attempt to maximize profits.

Having to repeatedly buy the same book will be a financial and logistical disaster for libraries, one that could force a few to close their doors. Even worse, there are signs that other publishing companies may soon follow the lead of HarperCollins, which could devastate libraries all around the world.

Andy's petition demanding an end to self-destructing ebooks has a goal of 100,000 signatures.  Please join us in voicing your opposition to this policy of self-destructing eBooks.  Sign the petition and get more info here:  http://tinyurl.com/3n6b6ab

To see if libraries are still boycotting HarperCollins, you can visit the website http://boycottharpercollins.com/

G3) TV Special about FIRST Robotics

Greetings Friends of FIRST®!

I have seen a preview of this special and it is very thought provoking about the future of education in this country and how you, as a part of FIRST, can help for the better.

I hope you will join with me in watching this incredible special.

Please mark your calendar and tune in to CNN, Sunday, May 15 at 8 PM ET/PT. (Check your local listings for channel info and broadcast times.)

2) In the Beginning: Making Sense of the Creation Evolution Debate

Science claims that the universe evolved over an extremely long period of time.  But the Bible says that the world was created in six days.  Some have attempted various means of reconciling the two views, yielding a third view, that God was involved with creation but used the evolutionary process.
What is the truth?  Can the Bible be trusted?  Can we take it just as it reads?  And if so, do we have to throw out science?

In the Beginning: Making Sense of the Creation Evolution Debate is a 5-night lecture series that provides answers to these questions.  Research biologist, Dr. Timothy Standish, and Seminary Professor, Dr. Ron Clouzet, will discuss genetics, radiometric dating, the age of the earth, and the flood and fossils.
The seminar will air on the Hope Channel May 4-8 beginning at 7:30 each evening.  Public showings will be held at the office of dentist, Dr. Richard Beckermeyer, 123 Marmont Street, Niles, Michigan.  For more information and to register, please call Dorothea Sarli at 269-684-3590 or dsarli@melwade.com.

7) Volunteer Opportunities

A) Blossom Time Parade will start in St. Joseph and end in Benton Harbor on Saturday, May 7.  They are looking for volunteers that will collect banners from the floats and bands at the end of the parade, roll them up and load them on to a truck.  If you have happy memories of watching the parade as a kid and now that you are a "big kid" you like to be of assistance behind the scenes so the parade can roll with success, contact the Volunteer Center for additional details.

B) Tire Recycling Collection

Do you like to see clean road sides, free of garbage?  Encourage people to discard old tires properly by volunteering at a tire collection.  Volunteers will help unload tires from residents' vehicles, so some lifting and dirt will be involved.  Jill Adams, the lead person in the event says, "I'm a girl, and I unload tires at every event (except at the event the day before my son was born), so it's not so bad."  Jill is looking for individuals, groups of friends, employee groups - whomever!  Work gloves will be provided.
