G6)  Clean Tech Competition

Dear Home School Educator,

Registration for the 2018 Spellman High Voltage Electronics Clean Tech Competition is open and waiting for your students! In 2017, 26 different nations had teams sign up to be a part of the Competition and with your help, we can continue to grow that number in 2018; in fact we already have two nations submit teams! This is a wonderful opportunity for the high school students of Homeschool Hub to showcase their knowledge and passion for STEM to solve a very real issue the entire world is facing: Climate Change.

The Clean Tech Competition is an international research and design challenge for 15-18 year old pre-university students. This is an educational opportunity for students across the world that challenges students to be innovative while encouraging their passion for the sciences and we want the students of Indiana to participate in this year's competition! Now is the time to tell your teachers and spreading the word to the students so they can gather their teams and get ready to register! There is no limit to the amount of teams per school/organization and I hope to see many registrations from Homeschool Hub.

Competition Information
Each year, the Spellman High Voltage Electronics Clean Tech Competition encourages scientific understanding of real-world issues and the integration of environmentally responsible energy sources.
·         The 2018 Challenge: "Solving Climate Change" asks students to develop a clean technology solution to the many problems associate with climate change.
·         Teams consist of 1-3 students, are assisted by a Team Leader (i.e. parent, teacher, or mentor), to develop a written proposal.
·         No limit to the number of teams per school!
·         There is no entry fee.
·         Online registration is open https://www.cleantechcompetition.org/log-inregister/
·         First Round Paper Submissions are due April 20, 2018.

·         Finalists compete for the $10,000 (USD) grand prize and a 'Continued Mentorship'
·         Final event to happen at Stony Brook University, New York, USA July 13, 2018!

1) MSU Developmental Stuttering Project!

Hello from the MSU Developmental Stuttering Project!

Our research team at Michigan State University is currently examining brain development in young children to better understand the cause of stuttering and to gain information that may eventually lead to improved diagnosis and treatment efforts. The study is led by Dr. Soo-Eun Chang, our principal investigator, and is coordinated by speech-language pathologists Saralyn Rubsam and Megan Sheppard. (To find out more about our work please visit our website or check out a feature on our work from the Capital Area Women's Lifestyle Magazine).

We are currently in the seventh year of our study, and we are continually enrolling young children to participate. We are reaching out to you in hopes that you might help to spread the word throughout your community!

We are actively enrolling young children, 3-6 years of age, including children who stutter and children who do not stutter, to participate in our study.

Remuneration for participant families include:
Payment to parents for their time involved.
A comprehensive report of the child's speech, language, hearing, and IQ assessment at no cost.
A picture of the child's brain!

You can help us recruit children for our study by sharing this research opportunity with the families and friends in your community.

There are several ways you might help:
·         Print a short announcement in your school or company newsletter.
·         Post the enclosed flyer on a bulletin board.
·         Place an announcement or link on your web site.
·         Distribute the enclosed information via email.

Should you have any questions or if would like to refer any children to our study, please feel free to contact Saralyn Rubsam or Megan Sheppard at speechlabmsu@gmail.com or (517) 884-3286.  Additional information regarding the study is available for your reference on our website.

G1) Brain Warmer Upper

What do you call a frog with no legs?

Answer to the last puzzle:
Your breath.

G2) Research Participants Needed

Hello!
My name is Leah Ewald, and I am a current MSW student at Grand Valley State University. I wanted to reach out as I am conducting an independent study for my research class on the impact of a semester of study-abroad in undergrad on the world views and identity on former homeschool students. I am currently looking for interested individuals who meet the criteria below who would be willing to participate in a interview about their experience. If this request could be passed on to other homeschool community members, I would much appreciate it!

Participants must..
         - be between the ages of 21-35 years old
-have participated in homeschool for the equivalent of grades 7-12
-have been raised in a conservative, Christian family
         - have participated in a college or university's semester-long study abroad experience during his/her undergraduate education

If you answered "yes" to all of these questions, please email me at your earliest convenience.Or if you know someone who may qualify, please share my information with this person and ask him/her to contact me ASAP, so I can discuss my study  in greater detail with this person!

* All interviews will be kept confidential, and my research study is only for a class project.  It will not be distributed to the general public.

Please respond by emailing me personally at ewaldl@mail.gvsu.edu.

Thank you so much for your help!

G3)  Parental Rights Amendment to US Constitution

There is a proposed Amendment to the US Constitution that could be of interest. The Parental Rights Amendment (PRA) to the United States Constitution seeks to protect the right of parents to direct the upbringing, education, and care of their children, including the right to homeschool.

The following is a message sent out by ParentalRights.org jrecently. They are asking people to contact their representatives in Congress and voice their support for the PRA:

"Great news! Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-IL) has announced he is ready to introduce the Parental Rights Amendment in the U.S. House of Representatives. This means the PRA will soon have been proposed in both chambers of Congress; Sen. Lindsey Graham has already submitted companion resolution S.J.Res. 48 in the Senate.

Before the resolution's introduction in early November, Rep. Hultgren (and ParentalRights.org!) would like to get a good number of initial cosponsors—members of the House who join him on the bill right from the start—preferably from both political parties. After all, parental rights is not an issue only for one side of the aisle, and either party would be foolish to yield the issue entirely to their opponents.

So this is where you and I come in: I am about to contact my member of Congress, and I urge you to do the same. Take a moment right now, before you close this email, to call your representative and ask that they join Rep. Hultrgen as an original cosponsor of the Parental Rights Amendment."

G6) Online Math Class Survey

My name is Corey Colosky and I am a high school math teacher trying to help the homeschool community. If I can get enough people interested, I will be offering virtual math classes starting in the summer of 2018 and then again during the 2018-2019 school year. The format would be like a webinar where the class is live and the students can interact with each other and with me as the teacher. I would like to keep the price at $100 for the entire course. I was hoping that you would simply share this information with members of Homeschool HUB so I can see who is interested and which classes they are interested in. Here is a sign-up form. Filling this out does not commit you to anything, but it informs me that you are interested. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GV8BKM3

If you or members have questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I am working full-time as a teacher so please be gracious if it takes me a few days to respond to your emails.

I do already have Geometry and Algebra 2 courses completely online if you want to check it out also. This is different than what I am offering with the virtual classes because the virtual class would be live lessons. http://coloskys-math-academy.thinkific.com/

Thank you for your time,
Corey

1) STEM conference at SMWC for middle school girls

For the 10th consecutive year, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will host a conference aiming to nurture girls' interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The conference, Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics, is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 28 at SMWC's Hulman Hall. Open to young women in grades 6-8, EYH offers a day of hands-on activities and interactive workshops to inspire participants to consider careers in STEM.

Nine workshops led by female STEM role models will cover topics including chemistry, biology, astronomy, forensics, engineering and sustainability. The conference includes a walking tour of SMWC and a science demonstration show. A separate program for parents and guardians will run concurrently with the workshops. The program aims to equip adults with knowledge and skills to support young girls' STEM goals.

In honor of its 10th anniversary at SMWC, a national consultant in STEM education and technology integration has been chosen for the event's keynote speech. Ginger Lewman works with Education Services and Staff Development Association of Central Kansas, a non-profit education service center, in inspiring and assisting educators as they determine the in's and out's of project/problem-based learning, STEM, technology integration and gifted/high-ability learners.

Registration fee is $25, which includes two workshops, lunch and t-shirt. To learn about all the sessions and to register, visit www.smwc.edu/eyh. Sponsorship by Duke Energy has made several scholarships for local attendees possible, Clark said.

3) Michigan History Day

Good afternoon,

The Historical Society of Michigan is proud to sponsor Michigan History Day® or National History Day in Michigan and Michigan History for Kids magazine.

National History Day is an educational competition designed to encourage students in grades 4 – 12 to explore historical subjects through hands-on study. Students do not have to be in the traditional school setting to participate. Program materials and district competitions are open to all students; all that is required is an enthusiastic student and an adult sponsor.

Over the course of several months, students research an individually chosen topic. Each student becomes a historian, considering his or her topic from many angles and arguing a point of view. They present their research by creating an exhibit, documentary, website, performance, or paper. With the exception of the paper category, students can work on entries in teams of up to five students or as individuals. National History Day aligns with many Content Expectations for Social Studies and Language Arts and addresses the C3 Framework for Social Studies content. Learn more about this free program at http://hsmichigan.org/mhd/.

Aimed at children in third and fourth grades, Michigan History for Kids goes beyond the textbooks, exploring the history and heritage of all Michigan's peoples. The magazine thoroughly integrates Michigan's Grade Level Content Expectations and other emerging standards into its many stories, information, and activities. Using both print and digital platforms and a racial-equity lens, each issue brings to life a different part of our state's past and features unbiased stories about the diverse people, places, and events that have impacted Michigan over time. You can learn more about the magazine and view sample content at http://michigankids.org/.

We would love the opportunity to share more about these exciting programs with you. We can provide resources, answer questions by phone or e-mail, or set up a meeting.

Please contact Amy Bradfield at bradfield@hsmichigan.org or (517) 324-1828 to learn more about Michigan History Day and Michigan History for Kids.
