1) Next week there's a great educational opportunity coming up at Andrews University.  Admission is free and open to the public.  Randy is a fun and dynamic speaker -- you won't want to miss this.

Randall Younker will present, "Forgotten Treasures of Biblical Archaeology," on Monday, March 30, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Chapel at Andrews University. We live in a time when secular media often seems to suggest archaeology has, at best, little to do with Biblical history or, at worst, outright contradicts history. However, a review of archaeological finds from the Holy Lands over the last 150 years, shows there have been a large number of significant, even dramatic discoveries directly relating to the people, places and events mentioned in the Bible. Since these discoveries have been reported over a century and a half as isolated finds, their significance and full impact have been lost on both scholarship and the lay public. However, when these discoveries are viewed together they provide a rather stunning picture of the historical accuracy of the Biblical story. This presentation will help us "rediscover" some of these "forgotten treasures" of the Bible. For more information, contact the Horn Museum at 269-471-3273.

Directions: (From Niles via the bypass)
Take the second Berrien Springs exit (Old 31 or MI 139) and turn right at the stop sign.
Turn left into Andrews University (when you see the main AU entrance)
Turn right at the circle, and make a quick left into the Seminary parking lot
The Seminary building is right in front of you.

Enter the building. Go up a half flight of stairs and follow the halls to the opposite end of the building.
There you will see the chapel.

2) Driver's education classes: Express Driving School in Edwardsburg is offering a $100 discount per student if a minimum of 6 students enroll.  We already have 3 students ready to go.  Even if you live in Niles or Buchanan, consider these classes as carpooling can be discussed.  Classes begin in May.  Call Donnelda for all the details and to sign up:  269-683-2372.

FYI--HOMESCHOOLERS IN THE NEWS

Homeschooler Among Top Contestants on TV Show

According to a recent article in the Arizona Republic written about Scottsdale resident Scott MacIntyre, "just everything about [Scott] is remarkable." At least that is what his former piano teacher from Arizona State University will tell you. Born almost completely blind, Scott was homeschooled and began training in classical piano at age 5. He also plays the guitar and drums and is an exceptionally gifted singer/songwriter.

After starting college at 14 years old, he graduated from Arizona State University at age 19, summa cum laude, with a bachelor's degree in piano performance, and was nominated by the College of Fine Arts as the outstanding graduate. Scott is a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship to the United Kingdom where he obtained his master's degree in performance studies from the Royal College of Music and Royal Holloway University of London.

Scott, his mother and two siblings, Katelyn and Todd, have performed together in a vocal ensemble, the MacIntyre Family Singers. Their mother Carole, who has home educated her three children for 19 years through highschool, is herself a student of piano, voice, flute, and guitar. As an independant musician, Scott has traveled to cities in North America and Europe for performances and frequently donates performances for conventions, churches, charities, and stadium athletic events.

With all of these accomplishments (including many more not listed here), Scott can easily be considered a success by anyone's standards. But as a homeschooled graduate, Scott is a shining example of a young person who is taking the education and training given to him by his parents and using it to make a difference in the culture.

Currently Scott is one of the top 36 contestants on FOX's television program American Idol. A singing competition airing on Fox, American Idol seeks to discover the best new or upcoming singer in the country through a series of nationwide auditions. A panel of judges give critiques of each contestant's performance. In the later stages of competition, the American public decides the outcomes by telephone voting.

One of 12 individuals competing on the program, Scott stands out not just because of his incredible talent, but also due to his character and Christian testimony. HSLDA would like to commend his desire to use these accomplishments to honor God in the commercial music industry.

On Saturday, March 28, 2009 children and adults alike will have the opportunity to create fishing poles from tree limbs and twine!  Join St. Joseph County Park staff from 1 to 3pm at Ferrettie/Baugo Creek County Park, in Osceola, for the Rustic Fishing Pole program.  Participants will build old fashioned fishing poles similar to those made by the early pioneers, and participants will test their skills capturing carp, bass, or bluegill.  Bait is provided.  Bring the family out to learn old fishing traditions, and make a sustainable craft!
The fee for the workshop is $5 per person.  Recommended for ages 4 and older, youth under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.  Registration and payment is required by Wednesday, March 25, 2009. For more information or to register, call 574/654-3155.  Ferrettie/Baugo Creek County Park is located at 57057 Ash Road, just north of Lincolnway in Osceola.

CLASSIFIEDS

If half the families in Indiana shifted $6.25 of their current weekly food budget to the purchase of Indiana grown or produced local food that this effort would provide an annual contribution of 300 million dollars into the local Indiana economy.* Impressive? Yes, but that's not the final number. Studies consistently show that a dollar spent locally will multiply itself by 3 to 5 times making the actual economic impact of that one dollar in the local community where it was spent far greater than a buck.  (Click here for an article about that subject: Download As the Dollar Turns Wesseler <http://www.goinglocal-info.com/files/as-the-dollar-turns-wesseler.pdf> )

Initially it may be impossible to believe but, with a subtle shift in our food spending habits, *we can make a $900 million to $1.5 billion economic impact on Indiana in one year*. No government handouts, no Senate sub-committee hearings, no bailouts, no loans. Just real people buying real food getting real results.

In these trying times, many of us feel powerless to do anything to improve the economic situation in which we find ourselves. This is something we all can do. When do we start? How about now? Let's get this ball rolling. Farmers who have locally grown food available for us right now, and Consumers desiring to buy locally grown food are uniting in the South Bend area to keep our dollars in our community!  A not for profit group has formed called the Purple Porch Coop, of which I am a participating committee member.

www.purpleporchcoop.com.  We are in the process of linking farmers with consumers through an online ordering system.  You will be able to view on the web site, what you would like to purchase, from various farmers, submit your order/choice and then meet at a specific location/time and date to pick up the items you ordered.  This will be a fantastic thing once it is up and rolling for our community; both the farmers and the consumers. Until the time the web site is completed with ordering/purchasing information, if you desire to BEGIN NOW, to keep your food dollars within the South Bend area, please contact me.  I have contact information for your local farmers I would love to pass on to you, including the items they have available for you to purchase;  bread, chickens, turkeys, beef, pork, eggs, cheese, lamb and more!
