And LAST BUT NOT LEAST: classified ads and links of interest at the end of your weekly news.    1) New Creations Offers 2009 Summer Art Camps in the Michiana Area   Gloria Seitz, a certified K-12 art teacher, will be teaching art camps at Hobby Lobby in Mishawaka. The camps will run for 90 minutes each day and consist of a variety of projects, using materials such as paint, clay, scratch art, and metal tooling. CLASSES WILL BE HELD THE WEEK OF JUNE 22,24,25, and 26. Ages 6-10 will meet from 11-12:30 a.m. Ages 9-adult will meet from 1-2:30 p.m.   The cost is $45 for the six hours of instruction and includes all materials except a sketchbook and pencil. We will be making 6-8 projects.   Please call Gloria at 574-271-8069 before June 15 to enroll or email her at seitzhome@sbcglobal.net.  Classes do fill up, so be sure to get your registration in early.    A 3 day painting class is being planned for July 21-23 from 1-3 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Free Church, and in the evening from 7-9 p.m. at Community Evangelical Free Church in Niles. The cost will be $35 and includes use of the paints. Canvases will need to be purchased.   2) Get creative at the Niles District Library this summer!   Our summer reading theme this year is Get Creative @ the Library. This program starts on June 1 and ends on July 25.   Storytimes are at 10:00 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday sand Thursdays.  Coloring pages will be given away at the end of each storytime. Squigglers are at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.   There will be three Brain Puzzles per week plus craft bags for the older children. During the summer the children will be challenged with seven Get Creative Contests. Eleven crafty classes will encourage the youngsters to be more creative.   As always kids, teens and adults will use our special calendars to record the minutes they read. The children will be rewarded for every hour they read with prizes and raffle tickets. Teens will earn food coupons and raffle tickets while adults will receive books and raffle tickets.  Check-in weeks for the kids will be June 15 to 20, June 29 to July 3 and July 20 to 25. Teens and adults may check-in their calendars June 22 to 27, July 6 to 11 and July 20 to 25.   The Scholastic Book Fair will be June 15 to June 20.   Our Grand Finale will feature the Magic Man, Stevyn Compoe, on Wednesday, July 29 at 1:30 p.m.  All grand prizes will be awarded at that time.   Calendars for children, teens and adults will be available on May 22nd.  Kids earn two prizes for every hour read up to 10 hours, then raffle tickets are given.  Teens get food coupons for every two hours they read up to 12 hours and then raffle tickets are awarded. Adults recieve a hardcover book for every five hours read up to 20 hours and then they, too, will be given raffle tickets.   Check-in weeks for the kids are June 15 -20, June 29-July 3 and July 20-25. Limit 8 per class, age limit 8 years or older There is a limit of 3 classes per person and the deadline to sign up is 2 weeks before the class.   This year we are having seven creative contests for the kids. Each submission should have the child's name, age and phone number some place on the item. The judges decisions will be final and submissions may be displayed in the Children's Department. Items will be available for pick-up after August 15.   Storytimes are at 10:00 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Free coloring pages and craft bags will follow the themes of the stories.   Squigglers will gather at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays.   Break open the piggy banks for our annual Scholastic Book Fair to be held on Monday, June 15th through Saturday, June 20th.  Buy one book, get another book of lesser value for FREE. Lest We Forget is a patriotic organization dedicated to promoting patriotism and our nation's heritage.  The Week of June 17 – 21st  Lest We Forget will be putting on multiple events that will require the assistance of many volunteers including re-enactments, a World War II reunion of the Forgotten 500 and a Field of 1000 Flags at Benton Harbor Airport.  As part of your Father's Day weekend why not volunteer with Dad to honor the men and women who make this country great!  This is a great individual, family or group opportunity… there is something for everyone!  Check out this and other volunteer opportunities on-line at www.volunteerswmi.org.  You can also visit www.LestWeForgetUSA.org or e-mail Rod at randskrieg@cybersol.com.  You can also call Rod at 468-6167 or Don at 925-7176.   5) Reader's Theater Performance The Stool Pigeons are giving a performance on Friday, June 5th at 7pm at Grace United Methodist Church in Niles. Admission is free. The program will consist of humorous skits, poetry and fairy tales performed by homeschool moms and their teens. Bob (Cash) Cashbaugh is the director. Refreshments will be served afterwards. We hope to see you there for a fun filled night!   6) The homeschool orchestra and choir invite you to enjoy their free concert on Thursday, June 11, 7:00 at Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Grant St. in Niles.  Refreshments will be served afterward.    7) Parent Partnership info online This program is available to any southwest Michigan homeschooler.  It involves becoming a part-time student at Berrien Springs where they have set up some very "homeschool friendly" classes (that only meet once/week, or less).  Through the program you can also get Rosetta Stone foreign language classes to do online at your home, dual enrollment college classes, and many Community Resource classes such as Children's Choir for grades 1 and up, Show Choir for advanced teens, Robotics classes for ages 5 and up, and many more. Many libraries have special summer programs for children. Sometimes libraries bring in guest artists and writers to give presentations or offer special workshops. Your child could discover a new interest or hobby.   Go for a hike (or a bike hike, if you prefer). To make this an educational experience for your child, you can plan to stop along the trail and check out interesting insects, birds, and plants. If this seems like too much preparation, just take a digital camera along, and stop along the way and take interesting photos.   You can involve younger children by having them plan out a snack break or bag lunch. This is a way to start encouraging them to eat healthy.   Visit local attractions. There are area attractions that are both educational and interesting. Check out what's in your area.   Create a family scrapbook. For a creative project, your child or children could develop a family scrapbook. Help your child gather pictures, drawings, certificates or other items of importance and organize them into a scrapbook. This could be very simple or elaborate, depending on the age of the child. A scrapbook is a way to encourage planning and creativity, and it's fun!   Encourage your child to volunteer. If your child is a bit older (probably at least 9 or 10), s/he he could volunteer at some organization in your area. Animal shelters sometimes allow children to come and walk animals or just pet animals to socialize them. Children can volunteer to read to people at the hospital or nursing home. Even walking around and collecting litter in parks or on the roadway provides a way for a child to volunteer. Registration deadline is June 1. 2) HOMESCHOOL SCIENCE 2009-2010 Randy Graves and Peggy Judge are pleased to continue offering science classes for homeschoolers in the Michiana area using the science facilities generously offered to us for our use by the Biology department at Andrews University. For this coming year the two homeschool science courses that will be offered are Physical Science and Chemistry for the ages / grade levels indicated below. Both courses will be taught from 2nd edition textbooks in the Apologia series by Dr. Jay Wile. ² A deposit of $75 is required to hold a spot in each class and is used for purchasing the lab materials for the year. Below are the age/grade levels we believe are appropriate for the courses we offer. There are overlaps allowing for difference in maturity, science interests and math skill level prior to taking a course. We believe that younger elementary students can appropriately do their science and labs fully at home. Students should complete Dr. Wile's or similar courses at each level before moving to the next levels as shown below: COURSE-Year offered AGE(min.) Classes are on Friday afternoons and will start on August 28, 2009 and end on April 30. 2010 with the possibility of going into May if any Friday's have to be cancelled due to weather or the teachers' work schedule if they have to miss a class that can't be taught by a substitute teacher. And LAST BUT NOT LEAST: classified ads and links of interest at the end of your weekly news.    1) Language Arts Clinic--Tuesday, May 12   Parents interested in tips and tools for teaching beginning reading, spelling and handwriting are invited to attend a clinic on May 12th from 10:30 -11:30 a.m. hosted by Pilgrim Institute, 302 W. Third St., Mishawaka.  Jeanette Whittaker, a homeschool parent and former classroom teacher, will draw on her experience with kindergarten and primary level students to share strategies and tips for introducing and mastering the basics of reading and spelling.   With the right tools at hand young children can discover the joy of reading and begin the process of becoming an independent learner. The clinic will present a tried and true method for teaching reading, spelling and handwriting and demonstrate sequential activities and resources for both parents and students. The clinic will include hands-on activities for beginning reading students.   Beginning readers are invited to attend with their parents. NOTE:  The clinic will not address reading learning disabilities such as dyslexia.   2) Homeschool hangout this week is having a presentation day.   This is an opportunity to read a poem you have written, show something you're really proud of that you've worked on this year, play a piece of music you've learned or something similar.  Please limit yourself to 3-5 minutes, or the equivalent of two short pieces or one long one.  We want to distribute the time evenly.   We will begin presentations at 3:00.  Free play will be available before that.  At 3:00 we will need to limit gym time to quiet activities so we can hear the presentations.   You are always welcome to call me with questions you may have. I tutor Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus. I also tutor elementary and middle school children. I have 11 years of experience working with children in the AWANA program at church. I enjoy teaching and interacting with students of all ages.
