G1) Brain Warmer Upper

This week's puzzle:

Pretentious Proverbs
Translate each sentence into a common proverb.

1. Deviation from the ordinary or common routine of existence is that which gives zest to man's cycle of existence.

2. There's no value to be derived from demanding attention by loud screeches over fallen white liquid derived from the lactic glands of a female bovine.

3. An excess of culinary experts impairs the quality of a thin derivative of meat and/or vegetables.

4. He who locks himself into the arms of Morpheus promptly at eventide, and starts the day before it is officially announced by the rising sun, excels in physical fitness, increases his economic assets and cerebrates with remarkable efficiency.

Answers to last week's puzzle:

1) Every cloud has a silver lining.
2) Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
3) Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
4) Birds of a feather flock together.

G2)  Free Unschooling/Homeschooling/Alternative Eduication Films

This film festival is free online for a while.  Films include five hours of interviews with John Taylor Gatto (New York State teacher of the year who resigned to promote unschooling and homeschooling), a Spanish language (with English subtitles) one about the way children learn and why the system of schooling public schools use isn't effective--it's interesting to hear the same ideas from another culture/language, one interviewing ten grown up homeschooled people, and more.  Check it out:

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1)  Notre Dame Children's Choir

1)  Notre Dame Children's Choir

My name is Mark Doerries and I am the director of the Notre Dame Children's Choir, an afternoon sacred-music choral music program for children ages 5-15. We are an ecumenical and free program that meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00-5:30pm from September through May. If you or any families in your organization are interested in our program, we would love to speak with you further. Below is a brief statement about the Notre Dame Children's Choir and how to join:

The Notre Dame Children's Choir is an ecumenical ensemble for Christian sacred music open to singers of ages 5 to 14. In addition to learning healthy vocal technique, choristers practice the fundamentals of reading and expressing music. The choir as well as vocal lessons, music dramas, retreats, field trips, and regional tours are free to all singers. The choir rehearses twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:00-5:30PM beginning in September of this year and is free to all involved.

The Notre Dame Children's Choir includes the following opportunities:

- A 100-voice choir for children focused on ecumenical sacred-music singing and music education.
- A musical retreat to YMCA Camp Eberhart each fall.
- A sacred music drama with roles for children and adults.
- Voice lessons for choristers.
- Annual winter and spring concerts.
- Participation in an annual festival of local church choirs with a nationally recognized choral conductor.
- Regional tours (for the oldest singers)

Further information about the choir and online registration may be found at www.ndcchoir.org. If parents have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at mdoerries@nd.edu.

1)  ACT/SAT Prep

Hello.

Please pass this along to any families you know with high school students who may be preparing to take ACT and SAT test.

I have dozens of SAT and ACT study guides that I loan out to students, and they can email me questions about any math problems they need help with.

I don't charge for this.  Just trying to help others with my particular God-given ability.
