MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1) Regional Homeschool Spelling Bee
2) Free String Ensemble Christmas Concert--Saturday!
3) Upcoming Glass Bus Tour

1) Regional Homeschool Spelling Bee

Calling all spelling enthusiasts!

The Regional Homeschool Spelling Bee is scheduled for Wed.,  Jan. 15th, 10 a.m. at Berrien Springs Community Library.  This Bee is the first step toward qualifying for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.  The top 3 finalists from this Regional Homeschool Bee will go on to compete at the Cloverleaf Regional Bee at the Mendel Center at LMC on Feb. 11th, 2014.  The winner of the Cloverleaf competition receives free entry and travel expenses to compete in the National Bee.

No entry fee is required.  Please RSVP to me if you are interested.  Students in grades 3-8 may enter, but if younger students want to participate they may.  All grades compete against one another.  The study words for both this homeschool (school) bee and the Spell It list for the Cloverleaf Bee can be found at www.spellingbee.com.  The username is shaynes@homeoftheshamrocks.org, and the password is spellit.  (spell it but without a space).  Click on Student Materials to download the lists.  Students should be prepared to know the entire list, not just their grade level, though this Homeschool Bee may not reach the most challenging 8th grade words. Open to all homeschoolers, you do not need to be a part of any specific group. This Bee is an excellent, friendly, non-stressful way to practice your spelling and learn proper Bee etiquette.

This Bee is different from the previously announced Homeschool Bee to take place in May in Coloma, which is competitive only within each grade level and does not advance to the National Spelling Bee or any other Bee.

Happy Spelling!
Sharon

2) Free String Ensemble Christmas Concert--Saturday!

A local Orchestra Ensemble from The Music Academies will play a free Christmas concert at the Niles Public Library Saturday December 14 at1:30 pm.  Come on out and listen to some cheerful Christmas music..

3  Upcoming Glass Bus Tour

Glass & Glitz The Libbey Way
January 25

This Saturday tour is focused on glass. We will see important glass windows, buildings, art and more in both Michigan and Ohio in major and off-the-beaten-track venues. Our visit to the Glass Pavilion w/docent tour will show the best of the Libbey, a glass blowing demo, stop at Libbey Glass Factory Outlet, lunch at the Spaghetti Warehouse. We may also go to the Libbey House for a tour.  And for kicks, a two-hour stop at Hollywood Casino. We will also view Tiffany windows in Toledo at places you would never visit on your own.  This is really an amazing trip. The only thing that would make it better would be if Dale Chihuly would be on the bus ... but just maybe we can make a little bit of his glass magic happen just for you. $75/person   For more info:  www.steponbustours.com

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1) Michigan Wine Grape Vineyard Establishment Conference
2) Student Volunteer Opportunity

1) Michigan Wine Grape Vineyard Establishment Conference

Many existing fruit growers and new farmers looking to enter Michigan's wine industry want more grape-growing knowledge. A wine grape establishment conference will be held by Michigan State University Extension January 21-22, 2014 at three locations using a webinar hybrid format to address this interest. The program agenda calls for speakers from five states to address basic topics such as marketing, site selection, varieties, establishment costs, planting stock, site preparation, planting and care, trellis construction, and pest management in Benton Harbor, Traverse City, and Novi.

An optional informational pre-conference session will help new grape growers better understand the basics of how the plant grows, pest management concepts, soil fertility, and terminology.
The detailed agenda and registration information may be found at http://events.anr.msu.edu/winegrape14/

The registration fee is $115 for the basic conference and $25 for the pre-conference introduction. Space is limited, so pre-registration and payment is required by January 10, 2014 or until full. No walk-in registrations will be accommodated.

MSU is an affirmative-action, equal-opportunity employer. Michigan State University Extension programs and materials are open to all without regard to race, color, national origin, gender identity, religion, age, height, weight, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, marital status, family status or veteran status. Accommodations for persons with disabilities may be requested by calling Joanne Davidhizar at 269-944-4126 ten days prior to the conference to ensure sufficient time to make arrangements. Requests after this date will be met when possible. The Wine Grape Establishment Conference is sponsored by Viticulture and Enology Science Technology Alliance (VESTA), and the MSU Product Center and the MSU Institute of Agriculture Technology.

2) Student Volunteer Opportunity

Hello my name is Kevin Verstraeten with the Playing with Purpose Scholarship program.

The PWP program is part of SportQuest Ministries located on the West side of Indianapolis. We are a 501 C-3 nonprofit organization focused to recognize and award Christian high school student athletes. Our goal is to identify outstanding Christian student athletes and invite them to travel on short term sport mission expeditions internationally or domestically.

In order to be more effective in spreading this news nationwide we are looking for people willing to volunteer their time to help us to find the contact information of school administrators. There are many Christian student athletes that are missing out on this opportunity. Our mission is to extend an invitation to all schools all over the United States.

This is what we would need our volunteers to do.

Our project would be to find a Guidance Counselor (10-12th grade) and the Athletic Director of every school in the country. We would send the student a list of all schools in one state. The student would then find the school website and copy the name and email address from these two administrators and paste the information in to the document.

If you have a high school aged student that would be interested in this; please let them contact us at 317-270-9495 or by email: kevin.verstraeten@sportquest.org  All volunteers will receive a document stating the total amount of hours volunteered.

Greetings,
Kevin Verstraeten

GENERAL INTEREST

 G1) Fascinating Feathers Contest

 G1) Fascinating Feathers Contest

Win Binoculars in Contest About Feathers!

Rumpled or resplendent, how a bird's feathers are displayed can be an indication of how its day is going. The Celebrate Urban Birds citizen-science project is looking for entries to its "Fascinating Feathers" challenge—entries may be photos, artwork, videos, poems, or stories and must be submitted to www.CelebrateUrbanBirds.org by January 15, 2014.

Some birds, like the Black-capped Chickadee, have an abnormal amount of white in their feathers. Birds with tufts or crests can raise or lower them at will, indicating everything from interest to irritation. Their feathers may be ruffled by the wind or because they see another bird trespassing on their territory. They may spread their wings or tails. And birds spend a lot of time preening to keep their feathers clean and can twist themselves into some strange positions.

"Consider the ordinary city pigeon," says project leader Karen Purcell. "This gray and white bird may be quite boring to some, but a closer look reveals stunning iridescent purple and green feathers on its neck and upper chest. That's the goal of this challenge: to get people of all ages outside looking at birds more carefully and finding beauty in even the most common birds."

To learn more about the Fascinating Feathers challenge and contest rules, visit www.CelebrateUrbanBirds.org. Winners will be posted on the Celebrate Urban Birds website. Prizes include Pennington bird feeders, Opticron binoculars, bird sound CDs, and much more.

Celebrate Urban Birds is a free citizen-science project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Participants collect information about birds in cities and get communities involved in nature through science, gardening, and the arts.

2) 2014 Iowa/ITBS Standardized Testing
3)  Winter Art Classes
4)  String Player Workshop for High school Students
5) Hour of Code Party
6) Berrien County Homeschool Spelling Bee

1) Discount on Christmas trees/wreaths for homeschoolers

Hello!

I'm a homeschooling mom of 5 (another due in March!). With Black Friday, red-suited men, and late-night tramplings headed our way, I have been wondering how moms like us are supposed to help our families remember the real "Reason for the Season."

My dad and I were just discussing this challenge at our family's Christmas tree farm. And it led me to personally invite your family to start off the Christmas season creating Christ-centered memories. Choose a tree from multiple varieties of natural, never-sprayed evergreens. Decorate for Christ's birthday celebration with a fresh wreath on your door. Come spend the afternoon (the family dog is welcome too!) at The Wellsands' Place Christmas Tree Farm.  http://www.wellsandsplace.com/

Mention that you are a homeschooler for $5 OFF a 2013 tree or wreath purchase as our gift for dedicating your time to the education of your children.

May God bless your efforts to make this Christmas season all about Him,
Nikki

2) 2014 Iowa/ITBS Standardized Testing

Christy Hanlon and her helpers are approved test administrators who oversee standardized testing for homeschooled students each April. Homeschooled students are welcome to participate, even if they are not affiliated with a homeschool organization.  Please mark your calendar for the 2014 Iowa/ITBS testing dates, April 21-23. Testing costs $32  per child and will take place at Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library.  Testing offered for any homeschooled student 4th through 12th grades.

NOTE:  If your high school student scores 90% or greater on the composite battery of the IOWA test, he/she qualifies for membership in the National Home School Honor Society. A test score of 90% or greater on the math battery of the IOWA test qualifies him/her for the National Math Honor Society for the Homeschool Community. If you have any questions, please contact Christy Hanlon at 574-674-9552 or The7Hanlons@juno.com.

G1)  Project FeederWatch

Project FeederWatch starts its new season this Saturday, November 9. To get ready, check out our two new live-streaming Bird Cams—set up at feeders in Manitouwadge, Ontario  http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/38/FeederWatch_Cam/ and right here outside our Visitor Center http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/40/Cornell_Lab_FeederWatch_Cam. You'll also see goldfinches, woodpeckers, and the last of the fall colors outside our offices here in Ithaca, New York. Watch the cams.

Our team just relaunched the Project FeederWatch website with some great new features: a nifty Common Feeder Birds tool to help you find out which birds to expect and what foods they like; revamped Tricky Bird ID pages; a better way to send us photos; and cool ways to look at your data.

Project FeederWatch is a fun and easy citizen-science project. Participants watch their feeders roughly two days per week and report their counts online. See the sidebar for more details on how to join.
