G3) Holocaust Survivor to Speak at Homeschool Conventions in 2015

The Great Homeschool Conventions team continues to be hard at work for what promises to be an incredible 2015 Homeschool Convention Season!

In addition to 100s of homeschooling workshops and a huge Homeschool Curriculum Exhibit Hall, we are thrilled to announce that Holocaust survivor, Inge Auerbacher, will be speaking in TEXAS, SOUTH CAROLINA, and CALIFORNIA! (Due to a scheduling conflict, Inge will not attend the MIDWEST Convention, but plans are in the works for another Holocaust survivor to speak in Ohio.)

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Homeschool families to learn from, and actually meet, a precious lady who is a vital part of our 'living history'. You don't want to miss this incredible 'teaching moment' for your children.

G4) Clean Tech Competition Welcomes Homeschool Students

Dear Home School Educator,

The Clean Tech Competition is an international research and design challenge for 15-18 year old pre-university students. This is a prestigious educational opportunity for students across the world that works well with both traditional and non-traditional educational settings. We invite homeschool students to participate in the 2015 Clean Tech Competition!

Competition Information

·         Teams consist of 1-3 students, are assisted by a Team Leader (i.e. parent, teacher, or mentor), to develop a written proposal.
·         There is no entry fee.
·         Online registration opens November 2014.
·         First Round Paper Submissions are due March 2015.
·         10 Finalist Teams are selected, given a $200 stipend and matched with a Mentor to help them prepare a Prototype and presentation for the Finalist Event.
·         Finalists compete for the $10,000 grand prize and 'Continued Mentorship' at the 2015 Final Judging event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in May 2015. Additionally all 10 Finalist Teams can nominate a school or educational organization for a $1,000 grant!

Please share information about this opportunity with other educators, students and parents. 2) Community Health Worker Training at Bethel College

Community members have the opportunity to become a certified community health worker (CHW) by attending a three-day training at Bethel College, Sept. 22-24. The deadline to apply is Sept. 1.

The CHW is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the CHW to serve as a bridge between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery.

Upon completion of the training, participants will be eligible for employment in organizations serving families, the elderly, children and youth, including outpatient medical/behavioral providers, hospitals, medical clinics, schools, churches and community centers.

3) Michiana Christian Speech and Debate Club

Michiana Christian Speech and Debate (MCSD) club invites students age 13-18 to consider joining us this season!  We have two options for joining.  Our first option is to take part in our regular classes as part of the Michiana Christian Co-op (meeting at Community Evangelical Free church in Niles.) The club meets on Wednesdays from 10-11 each week Sept. 10th through March (with breaks for Christmas). On the  2nd Friday of each month we meet from 4-9 to spar and practice with a potluck dinner.   The second option for joining is called a satellite member.  This option is for students who cannot attend the weekly class.  They come to the once a month Friday night club and do all their assignments and networking with us via the internet.  MCSD is also hosting a local practice tournament and will attend other tournaments together.  This is an excellent way for your students to put into practice their critical thinking skills while gaining experience and confidence in public speaking. For more information check out our website at http://michianaspeechdebate.com or email Gina at tlpgina@yahoo.com.  Hurry, class starts 9/10 and our first club meeting is 9/12!

4) Volunteers Needed!

Would you like to help other homeschool families and students?  Do you have creative ideas for trips, classes, programs?  Do you like to hang out with other homeschool adults?  Are you interested in shaping the future of education or serving the community?  Do you have math or accounting skills?  Just want to have some adult social interaction and snacks at a monthly meeting?  The Homeschool HUB needs you!  Any adult who has homeschooled, was homeschooled, wants to homeschool, or is homeschooling is welcome.  We are looking for board members and officers.  Board members come to one meeting a month (about 2-3 hours a month depending on how chatty we get).

Even if you just have one idea you want to help organize (park days, a one-day field trip or book sale, a pre-school get-together or high school club), you are welcome to do that without any ongoing commitment.

Please pass this along to anyone you know who might fit the bill.  We are friendly, and we welcome any help anyone can offer.

Electra, daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, rescued her young twin brother, Orestes, from her mother by sending him to Strophius of Phocis. The play begins years later when Orestes has returned as a grown man with a plot for revenge, as well as to claim the throne.

Horton faces a double challenge — not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.
