G1) Brain Warmer Upper

There are 2 men who are hairdressers. They are the only ones in town. Everyone in town goes to them and never goes to hairdressers out of town. You decide to go to the hairdressers. The one on the left has a big bald patch in the middle of his head. The one on the right's hair is lovely and shiny with no hair out of place. So, which one do you choose, the one on the left, or the one on the right? Why?

Answer to the last brain teaser: a keyboard

G4) Free Fun Science Activities for Thanksgiving

One of the hardest aspects of Thanksgiving is keeping my kids' hands off the food. I love it when they help me prepare the food, but I often find I end up with half the food on the plate and some kids who protest sitting at the table because they aren't hungry.

This year I have a plan to keep the kids busy and happy while I prep for the big meal. I've created four fun Thanksgiving inspired science activities that kids can enjoy, from baking their own pumpkin pie to decorating windows with DIY gel window clings - this list is bound to delight!

G5)  FeederWatch 2018-2019

The 2018-2019 season of FeederWatch kicks off on November 10.

"FeederWatch is easy to do and participants tell us they find so much joy in tracking their feeder birds and in making a contribution to science," Greig says. Participants make two-day counts from November through early April. They can spend as much or as little time as they like collecting data. Even counting birds once or twice all winter is a valuable contribution. But many people count birds more often.

It's amazing what we can learn when tens of thousands of eyes are focused on one thing. Those eyes don't miss much. For more than 30 years, people who feed wild birds have been reporting their observations to Project FeederWatch at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. FeederWatch participants turn their hobby of feeding birds–a hobby more than 50-million strong in North America–into scientific discoveries. Their reports help scientists better understand what happens to birds facing challenges such as climate change, habitat loss, and disease.

The spread of House Finch eye disease is a clear example of the value of this citizen science project. First reports of the disease came from sharp-eyed FeederWatchers in 1994. The Cornell Lab has been tracking the disease ever since by collecting vital information about sick birds from FeederWatchers. From that data, Cornell Lab scientists know the disease is spreading beyond House Finches.

"We're finding other finch species are being affected," says FeederWatch leader Emma Greig. "This includes feeder favorites such as the American Goldfinch, Purple Finch, Lesser Goldfinch, and Evening Grosbeak. Not only that, the pathogen that causes House Finch eye disease is becoming stronger and more dangerous. These stronger strains are nearly twice as deadly to the birds."

FeederWatch reports have also been used in scientific studies of bird behavior to create a continental dominance hierarchy–which species displace others for access to feeder food. More data on species interactions will be collected during the 2018-19 season. The graphic shows which of six species is more dominant relative to the others, based on data collected by FeederWatchers. The higher a bird's score, the more swagger it has at the feeder. Check out the FeederWatch interactive graphic showing dominance relationships for 13 species.

Project FeederWatch is a joint research and education project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Bird Studies Canada. To join tens of thousands of other FeederWatch participants, sign up online at FeederWatch.org or call the Cornell Lab toll-free at (866) 989-2473. In Canada, contact Bird Studies Canada at (888) 448-2473, toll free.

G6) Tennessee History Tour

The Civil War in the West Tour

The Franklin and Nashville battlefield sites never cease to imprint on our imaginations feelings of horror and loss. They also demonstrate to us the very essence of heroism and sacrifice that the generation of the 1860s exhibited with unceasing duty.

We begin our tour at Rippavilla, studying real flesh-and-blood people who grew up in families whose women and younger members carried on at home while their men invested their lives for the cause of independence or in seeking to preserve the old Union. The evolution of a plantation house, the lives of people slave and free, are captured in photos, bricks, beds, tables, kitchens, and dolls. The men of Rippavilla fought in the war and survived to continue life four years later, no doubt changed in ways they could not explain. One family of the slaves continued their building and architectural work and passed it on to succeeding generations, some of whom still fulfill that calling in a large firm in Nashville—with their own name on the marquee.

Winsted Hill gives us the panoramic vista that General John Bell Hood beheld, as his Army of Tennessee hurled itself against the entrenchments around Franklin. The beautiful memorials on the hill belie the devastation that occurred down below, but then our monuments freeze only names, flags, and dates of those heroes, long dead and buried elsewhere. We ponder the mistakes of Spring Hill and the impetuous, if not petulant, Hood as he questioned the manhood of his army and lined them up in magnificent array to cross two miles of open fields under artillery fire. We briefly examine the lives of some of the Confederate generals who died in the battle, all from different states, all beginning their military careers as company commanders and ending their lives along the Franklin Pike and Harpeth River as brigadier or major generals leading from the front.

The war again becomes personal as we learn of the Carter family and their ordeal of surviving the very vortex of the battle around their house and cotton gin. The tragic but heroic story of their son Tod brings to our memory once again that the boys in gray were fighting to protect and liberate their families and homes. Providence grabs our attention as we learn of the Ohioans of Emerson Opdyke refusing to sacrifice themselves in front of the lines, only to find themselves in position to save the Union army after the breakthrough in the Carter yard.

Our visit to Carnton never disappoints. A real family, caught up in a nightmare situation, rose to the occasion with love and service to the wounded and the dying. Their life was changed forever as the "widow of the South" kept the burial records of the boys who died, for years to come. The family cemetery became a shrine to the Confederate dead — no longer an anonymous resting place of the fallen..

Wednesday evening we'll gather at a local restaurant to enjoy a nice meal, sweet fellowship with one another, and a fascinating message: The Great Revival in the Southern Armies, by Mr. Potter.

The Battlefield of Nashville is mostly buried under urban sprawl. Shy's Hill has recently been preserved. Though a small area, it is significant in the Confederate line and quietly austere. You will learn about Col. Shy and his gallant defense and death there. Our next stop includes the well-preserved, though unused in battle, Fort Negley, a powerful example of the art of fortification; the position commanded the approaches to Nashville, a city today no longer in need of defense from external attack. We will discuss the earlier campaign of Fort Donelson and the strategic importance of the Tennessee Capitol, a place whose defensive posture could have resisted an attack by ten times the forces of General Hood.

Our final stop at the Capitol grounds gives opportunity to briefly examine the importance of various Tennessee luminaries like Presidents Andrew Jackson, James Polk, and Andrew Johnson. As the Volunteer State, the irony of Sgt. York and his memorial reminded us that some men of valor were coerced into service and still represented the finest in the fighting tradition of Tennessee. After all, the old saying was, don't tell a Tennessean what the fight is about, just tell him where it is!

HSLDA Essay Contest Now Accepting Entries through November 1
Careers: past, present, and future!

We're excited to announce the opening of our annual essay contest! We invite all homeschool students ages 7—19 to submit thoughtful responses to the prompts outlined below. Winning essays will receive up to $200 in cash prizes!

Category 1 (ages 7–10*): From being an astronaut or teacher to being president, there are so many exciting jobs you could have when you're older! What do you want to be when you grow up—and why?

Category 2 (ages 11–14*): As exciting new technology changes the way things get done, jobs change as well. Teachers no longer get chalk all over their hands, farmers use tractors instead of horses for ploughing, and reconnaissance missions are often done via satellite instead of physically scoping out the terrain. What is a job that you think would have been really fun to do "back in the day"—and why?

Category 3 (ages 15–19*): Technology is advancing so fast that some popular jobs didn't even exist 10 years ago! Imagine some of the fascinating new jobs that could exist in 2028: tele-surgeon . . . drone delivery support . . . flying car parking attendant. . . What is a fascinating new job that you hope exists by 2028—and why would it be so great? (Tip: Start by thinking of a need in your family, community, or the larger society. Could technology be used to help meet that need? What would that job look like?)

Caribou contests differ from other contests in that they:

- are offered six times per school year,
- contain interactive questions loved by students,
- require minimal effort and time from schools since contests are
being held online with automatic marking, complete statistics
available on the evening after the contest and no need to contact
  the Caribou organzation,
- provide 250 video solutions to selected questions,
- offer interactive practice access to previous years contests and
  detailed written solutions, and
- give prizes to the winners at the end of the cup.

Apart from online contests, we also offer math learning resources
that do not require contest participation: previous years contest
questions with detailed solutions, tutorials and mini courses,
for example, on interactive geometry for all grades, combinatorial
game theory for middle and high schools.

We invite you to have a look at our web page: cariboutests.com .
If you find it interesting, then please pass on this email to your
teachers in time for the first contest on October 17-18, 2018
which is free for all students.

Thank you for reading this email.

A fascinating article about the World Trade Center memorial of two beams of light and how bird experts watch for trapped or disoriented migrating birds.  In a partnership with the city, conditions were defined that allow them to ask for the memorial to be turned off temporarily to help the bids.  This is really worth checking out!

1) Homeschoolers Wanted for Election Involvement

Hey! I am looking for homeschoolers who are interested in getting involved in the next 50 days before the Tuesday, November 6 election in Michigan (if you are not in Michigan - forgive me!)

I am a homeschool alum. Went all through high school with my home education. Amazing and awesome experience!!!!! I got started in politics while still in home school - Mom taught me that "our freedoms as home schoolers are never guaranteed. And if we ever come to a time when we may need help - we need to make sure our elected leaders know who we are."

Little did I know that when I started walking in parades, and making phone calls for candidates that God was birthing something in my DNA … and that this arena is something I would be called to influence. Many of you know me through my work with Citizens for Traditional Values (departed there in 2015) or Information Network for Christian Homes (INCH).

There are two things I want to draw to your attention:
1 - There is a HUGE (huge huge huge) election on Tuesday, November 6. I'll include a list below of many things that is on the ballot. Look for your sample ballot here: www.michigan.gov/vote

2 - Do you have students that you would like to get involved? It is an incredible opportunity to build relationship with people who are running for office or to engage with the community.

I personally am looking for people who could help on the Proposal 18.1 - the ballot proposal regarding the legalization of recreational marijuana. I am working hard to DEFEAT it. Whether you are for or against recreational marijuana - please encourage people to learn more about what this proposal would do.

We need help making phone calls out of our Grosse Pointe office, also writing letters to the editors, informing church leadership in communities, handing out flyers.

You can learn lots via these links.

    Questions and Answers   http://healthyandproductivemi.org/questions/
    Resources   http://healthyandproductivemi.org/resources/
    Ballot Language   http://healthyandproductivemi.org/officialballotlanguage/

IF you are not interested in helping on the marijuana proposal — but would like to help with the Governor race etc please let me know. Michigan could USE your students and families engaged. Elections matter - and you never know: The engagement your family does now may be the birthing ground for your child to discover where God has called him/her to serve. The political arena is thrilling: we need more men and women who love the Lord, are committed to His values and are willing to serve and influence with integrity.

Thanks for all that you do for God.

As home schooling warriors you really are - heroes.

With all my love and gratitude.

3) Volunteer Opportunity

Good afternoon,
My name is Shelby Cook and I work for a fantastic organization called Cultivate Culinary. If You haven't heard of us please allow me to explain a little bit about what we do. I have also added a link to our website for more information.

https://cultivateculinary.com

Cultivate Culinary School & Catering is a 501c3, not-for-profit that is devoted to ending the cycle of joblessness, poverty, and hunger in the local communities of northern Indiana by providing a food rescue service and job training in the culinary arts.

Food rescue is the practice of gathering edible food that would otherwise go to waste from places such as restaurants, grocery stores, or dining facilities, and turning that food into frozen meals. After the meals are frozen we then distribute them to local food banks, food pantries, and emergency food programs.

We are always looking to partner with members and organizations in the community as well as looking for groups to come in and volunteer with us for two-hour shifts!

Currently, at Cultivate I organize all the volunteers and handle all communications within our organization..

Thank you so much in advance for your time and I look forward to hearing back!

G5) Servant Leadership Award

Promoting community service among homeschooled teens

HSLDA's Homeschool Foundation is now accepting nominations for its third annual Servant Leadership Award, a program that offers homeschooled teens an opportunity to be recognized for their leadership and selfless service to others.

We will honor three homeschool students for their voluntary community service with a $2,000 cash award presented to each in front of homeschool leaders from across the country at HSLDA's National Leaders Conference in the fall. Each winner will be given an opportunity to share briefly about his or her service.

Do you know a homeschooled teen who qualifies? Teens must be nominated by an adult to receive an application. You may be in a perfect position to encourage a teen by nominating him or her for the award. Last year, community leaders and parents nominated over 80 teens for the award. Their stories inspired us and encouraged us to expect great things from the next generation. Read about the 2017 award winners. >>

Click here to nominate a teen: https://hslda.realmagnet.land/servant-leadership-nomination-form  Nominations are due June 1, so don't delay!
