G 3) National Homeschool Book Award

In the Clickschooling review today there is an article about a new program called the National Homeschool Book Award.  It looks interesting.  They have four nominated books, which they'd like students to read.  Then students vote for which is the best.  It's a good way to choose some "current juvenile fiction that explores learning experiences occurring outside the traditional classroom setting and that resonates with homeschool readers".  Due to copyright considerations we can't cut and paste the article here.  Instead we have attached the entire Clickschooling issue to the update.  You can read the article there because it does a good job of describing the award and telling why it's a good idea, then go to the website to read about the four books here:
http://www.nationalhomeschoolbookaward.com/

By the way, Clickschooling is a great resource for homeschoolers!

G 4) Free resource to use for learning about earthquakes (or learning Spanish)

Panda's Earthquake Escape is a children's book available free online.  It's located here if you want it in English:
http://www.sylvandellpublishing.com/eBooks/reader/book/Panda/?lang=en

here if you want it in Spanish:
http://www.sylvandellpublishing.com/eBooks/reader/book/Panda/?lang=sp

There is lots of good info on earthquakes at the end of the book, but the print is hard to read.  You might have to print it out and read from that.

1) Homeschool Girl Scout Troop

Hello,

Our troop would like to invite all homeschooled girls in 2nd through 5th grade (or ages 7 to 10) to join our homeschool Junior/Brownie Girl Scout troop. We recently added the Junior level to our troop so now we can give 4th and 5th grade girls this wonderful opportunity too.

We have regular meetings every other Friday. We are planning some fun troop activities like a living storybook walk, a garden tea party, badge work, camping, service projects with Reins of Life and a local soup kitchen, and much more.

Let's turn out for this last play and show Bethel College that we appreciate them providing us the opportunity to see their high quality plays for a minimal fee.

3) Robotics regional tournament in Niles this weekend

Friday and Saturday, all day long, high school robotics teams from all over the state will converge on Niles High School for a regional tournament.  These are the big robots competing in an arena in the gym.  Admission is free and it's really fun to see.  Also make sure to wander through the 2nd gym where the "pit area" is located.  Teams will be furiously working on their robots between rounds.  There are several local team competing.  Excel, made up entirely of homeschoolers; Niles High School, a rookie team this year; and Berrien Springs High School, another rookie team with several homeschoolers on it.  This is the first year we've had a regional in the area, and it will be an annual event.  Come out and support the teams, and see if it's something your students might like to participate in themselves.

Note:  Robotics teams require builders and programmers, but also web site designers, art and business students to help with designing t-shirts, a logo, marketing materials and more, public speakers for presentations to schools, school boards, sponsoring companies, and the general public.  Don't think the only kids on robotics teams are the ones building the robot.  It's a team effort requiring many different talents.  For instance, there are students making up scouting report sheets and inputting the information the scouts bring them during the rounds into a spread sheet on a laptop.  The info helps as the team advances and gets to a point where they have to choose their alliance partners.
The fun and excitement during one of these tournaments is infectious.  Come check it out (and bring earplugs for any older folks who come along)

Each booth will offer an authentic menu while showcasing various displays, music and ethnic décor.

Nearly 5,000 visitors attend the fair annually. Each year, there are the familiar ethnic dishes, such as eggrolls, quiche, chips and salsa, and new flavors including pansit, chapati (a special Indian bread resembling a tortilla) and samosas (a Southeast Asian triangular-shaped pastry shell stuffed with spiced potatoes, onions and peas). If you aren't feeling adventurous, an all-American favorite, the corn dog, is sure to please. Satisfy your sweet tooth with tasty bubble tea, Brazilian fudge candy, delicious pastries, cakes, rolls and an assortment of European bakery treats.

Approximately $30,000 has been raised each of the past few years through the Food Fair, held annually since 1964. All proceeds benefit the participating clubs.

Over 150 volunteers help prepare vegetarian entrees, drinks and desserts from countries around the world, including Brazil, Europe, Kenya, Korea, South Asia and South Pacific, to name a few.

Food tickets can be purchased the day of the event in the ticket office of the Johnson Gym. Tickets are sold in increments of $5 and menu prices range from 50-cents to $6. Students will be allowed to access money from their cafeteria accounts to buy meal tickets. For more information, please contact the Office of International Student Services at 269-471-6395.

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1) Exchange City program
2) 28th Annual Michigan Home Education Convention
3) Volunteer Opportunities

1) Exchange City program - sign-ups now

This is an all day simulation on June 1 in Taylor, MI (Detroit area), following a 10 week prep economics unit study (starting at the end of March) for ages 9 & up.  When we participated several years ago it was mostly ages 9 – 15, not many high school kids.  Students spend the day running everything themselves.  The cost is $75.  Here is the description from their web site:

"Prior to the visit to Exchange City students work at home to complete related economic unit studies. All materials are provided. We suggest the work can be completed reasonably over a ten week period, working 2-4 hours a week.

Students will create resumes, complete job applications and have job interviews, for more 60 different jobs within the city! They take on roles of business owners, entrepreneurs, employees, public officials, consumers and citizens in a wide variety of businesses. These include: City Bank; Radio Station; Post Office; Health Center; Newspaper; Utility Company; Restaurant; Distribution Center; City Hall and a variety of retail stores and other business.

At the city students learn to create a business plan, calculate payroll expenses, plan advertising, take on accounting services, purchase materials, pay rent, pay taxes, and utilities. They also apply for a commercial business loan, write radio and newspaper advertisements, design business signs and logos, and create business slogans. Students and their businesses pay taxes, bills and repay loans as they market a product, make payroll and live within the laws of the city.

The Enterprise City program fee includes the home school curriculum pdf, on-line elections unit, job application process, ongoing program support, parent volunteer training, 7.5 hour simulation experience in Enterprise City, two Enterprise City paychecks, a checking account with personal checkbook and any merchandise purchased in the city during the simulation experience (students will take everything home that day). This is not an overnight program. This is a drop off program because there is very limited space on site. We suggest visiting the local children's museum or retail shops in town while the program is taking place."

3) Volunteer Opportunities

A) Spring Achievement in Berrien County is the only ALL 4-H exhibition where 4-H'ers showcase their project achievements over the last year.

This event is a good family volunteer option.  It is kid friendly.  Volunteers step in and help as things are happening through out the busy weekend.  Between the events you and your family can look at the projects.  (Don't tell your kids - they might even learn something!)

WHERE:  Orchard Mall in Benton Harbor     WHEN:     Saturday March 26 - Sunday March 27

Volunteers should check in at the 4-H Information Booth near the stage at The Orchards Mall - look for signs.

Help needed Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, 2:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Volunteers will help set-up different things in between demonstrations and events.  They also be project watchers to help secure exhibits.  Volunteers are welcome to bring a book/magazine to read while they keep an eye on exhibits or direct people with questions to the 4-H Information Booth.  There will be a blood drive that runs from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday and a service event from 12-4 pm that volunteers may wish to participate in.  The 4-H Talent Show begins at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and will need assistance.

On Sunday, volunteers will serve as exhibit watchers and help release exhibits starting at 5:30 p.m.  There will be different events going on and being torn down throughout the afternoon.  Volunteers will do teardown and pack up at the end of the event.

B)Project Bunny Buddies Brings Hope

Easter is traditionally a time for hope. For children dealing with the stress of being in a shelter or foster home, the tradition of receiving an Easter basket can bring unexpected joy.

A few years ago, seeing her own daughter's "happiness she felt on opening her Easter basket" inspired Jennifer Barber-Ruchti to extend that experience to some children whose parents might not be able to provide even a simple gift.

That year, Mike and Jennifer Ruchti, and their daughter Cecilia, took some Easter baskets to a homeless shelter.

"Some of the parents had never themselves received an Easter basket, let alone been able to give one to their own child," Jennifer learned from the workers.

In order to reach even more children, she presented her idea to the Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan, which took her dream and "ran with it," according to Deb Panozzo, the Center's adult and family coordinator.

Bringing volunteers together, the Center has been able to increase the number of children receiving a basket tenfold with its Bunny Buddies Project. Students from Michigan's St. Joseph High School's Key Club will be joined this year by additional schools' clubs to assemble the donations.

Presently the Volunteer Center is collecting items to fill this year's baskets. Especially needed are gifts, especially for the older children who are in foster care, the juvenile center and shelters serving the homeless and victims of domestic violence.

Donations of wrapped candy, baskets, grass, trinkets and toys are needed. Girls like make-up, lip gloss, nail polish, inexpensive jewelry, purses, hair products, and scarves. Boys like small games, wallets and hats. Also socks, tee shirts, breakfast bars, stickers, pens, and decks of cards would be good.

There are nearly 300 children from infants to age 19 in care, to whom they hope to present baskets.

Case workers who presented baskets last year to those recently removed from their homes found the chocolate and gifts helped "ease the pain" during the difficult transition to foster homes.

"Their eyes lit up like it was Christmas morning," another commented, along with, "The Easter Bunny remembered me."

"The children were beyond excitement - and that was before they started eating sugar."

"It is an extra, but sometimes the 'extras' are so important to an individual's spirt," Jen said, who continues to be the volunteer coordinator of the Bunny Buddies Easter Basket Project, even as her family as grown with the addition of a son, Donevin.

Advisor Lauri Berry and the students of the St. Joseph Key Club, will again organize the assembly of the baskets with the donated items and label them according to age and gender.

Donations are being accepted through April 8 at both of the Volunteer Center locations in Niles and St. Joseph.

Distribution will be made by the Department of Human Services. For more information go to www.volunteerswmi.org. Call 269-983-0912 or 269-683-5464 for more information. 11) Volunteer Opportunities

A) Would you enjoy spending a few hours with Russian Icons?  Windows to Heaven brings together a grouping of historically significant Russian Icons dating from 1500 to the present. St. Nicholas and St. George, Old Testament scenes, pictorial themes centered on the life of Jesus, and images of the Mother of God are represented in this collection.    The Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph is in need of Gallery Sitters during March and April for this fabulous exhibit.

Volunteer times are 10 am -1 pm and 1-4pm on Monday through Friday.  If you would like to spend 3 hours of your day in this great way, times available as early as next week!  Contact Danielle at dshepherd@krasl.org for more information or call the Volunteer Center.

Thinking about spring?  Consider these volunteer options:

B) Sarett's Spring Stampede is Saturday, April 9.  This unique 5k walk and run takes advantage of Sarett's nature trails.  Funds raised from the event go to provide environmental education programs.  Volunteers serve as course spotters for the event - providing direction to the runners and walkers.  If you would like to volunteer or participate in the event for more details go to www.sarett.com.

C) Love to garden?  There are community gardens in Benton Harbor , Niles and other places.  What do you love to do?  Plant, maintain, harvest or all of the above?  Some of the items are provided to food pantries where they hope to include fresh veggies when families receive packaged food from their food pantry.   If you would like to teach non-gardeners or youth about the joys of gardening - that role is also available.  Or perhaps cooking is your thing and would you like to present on creative ways to use those fresh veggies.  Contact the Volunteer Center and we can connect you with a community garden near your home.

D) Maintain flower boxes at the VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Benton Harbor.   This is would be a great option for a Master Gardener or for a plant lover.  This is a great option for a busy person because you can make this work with your schedule.

2) Request for Host Families (for 2011/12 school year)

This looks like a great experience for a homeschool family!

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in possibly hosting an exchange student for the 11/12 school year. We have students 15-18 years old from around the world that will be arriving in late August for 5 or 10 months. We need host families for these students. We have students interested in a variety of activities including  all kinds of sports, scouts, youth groups, piano, art, dance music, reading, math/science, skiing, baseball, soccer, volleyball, hiking/camping, basketball, choir, band, drawing and painting.

Without host families, we would not be able to help these students achieve their American Dream! Host families need only to provide a bed for the student and meals at home. Students can share a room with another kid. All other expenses are the student's responsibility. Host Families can consist of all make-ups such as single parent families, singles, couples with no kids, retirees, empty nesters, etc. These students make great mentors to younger children as well.

Host Families provide the following to host a student:
-          A bed for the student (students can share a room)
-          Meals at home
-          Loving, caring, environment for the student

Students come with the following:
-          Ability to speak English at a high school level
-          Complete Health Insurance
-          Spending money for anything they need including hygiene items, school supplies, clothes, long distance phone calls, etc)
-          Open mind about their American experience

We have students from all over the world including:  Australia. Brazil, Italy, Denmark, Japan, Mongolia, Spain, France, Germany, Turkey, Thailand, Colombia, Korea, Slovakia, China, Taiwan, Belgium, Mexico, and many more.

Your help is greatly appreciated, as we have several students to place with good host families! Exchange students can be a positive influence on your family, school, and community!

If you are interested and would like more information, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can give the exciting news to the student that their American dream is going to come true!

We are also looking for a few local coordinators as well. This is a paid, flexible part time position. Visit our website for details and to apply. www.chinet.org/ayp

5)  Mud Lake Bog Project

Hi everyone,
As some of you may know, I have been working with a group of students in a class called "Environmental Conservation". We call it the "Bog Class" because we've essentially adopted Mud Lake Bog in Buchanan, Michigan, learned about it, experimented on it, and have been having a lot of fun there. (Well, getting poison sumac wasn't in the category of "fun", but I think you get the idea....)

The kids in the class have come to the conclusion that the greatest threat to the bog and to wetlands in general is lack of awareness. So they've designed an awareness campaign -- and it involves you! (You didn't even know we were talking about you...) They would like you to visit the blog they've created and become a Follower -- it's easy to do. Just go to this address:

http://bogblog1.blogspot.com/

There you will learn about some of the things they've been doing in the bog including removing the very invasive glossy buckthorn, going on a night owl trip, and more! Plus, you can join in on the challenge which they would appreciate greatly.

You can also go to their facebook page:  Mud Lake Bog. Friend them. And have your friends Friend them. They'd like that a lot, too.

Wherever you go, once you're done following and friending, send a link to your own friends so they can do the same. Anyone who visits these pages will be entered into a drawing for a free spring tour of the bog led by members of the class.

If you have your own blog or website, please consider featuring. They want to get 100 Friends and Followers in a short amount of time -- sort of an experiment in social networking as well as spreading the great work they've been doing!

Won't you help them out?

Best ~

Beth Denton
