Come spend some time behind the plow, investigating the exhibits in the museum, check out the bee class going on as well. We will be open to the public from 1-4:00 pm. Come out and enjoy the fun!

3) Tiller's Classes

There's been tremendous interest in our new cheesemaking class which concentrates on hard cheese- in fact, the first class (April 21) was full, the second hard cheese class (Sept 29!) just filled up, so we convinced the instructor, Gary Colles, aka "The Cheese Smith" to teach a third class on Saturday November 10, 2012. Look for it to go up on the website soon. The class is the same price as the other classes: $100 tuition plus $10 materials. Remember, you will need to bring a cheese press to class! Look below for more information on upcoming classes.

8) Bethel Art Professor Showcases First of Three Shows, "Cuba Inside/Out"

Bethel College's Chair of the Visual Arts Department Christopher Stackowicz will showcase his newest photography exhibition, entitled "Cuba Inside/Out," during an opening reception on Friday, April 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will take place at LangLab, South Bend's newest gallery space, which is located at 1302 High Street. The exhibit will run April 27 to Aug. 1.

Featuring photography by Stackowicz and text by Yael Prizant, Ph.D., Notre Dame professor and writer, the exhibition will capture the daily drama and street theater which the two experienced during a recent trip to Cuba.

Prizant has been researching and writing about Cuban theatre since 2003. When she met Stackowicz, they realized his acumen for color and composition would dynamically represent the island, its art, its people and its complexities. In 2011, they went to Cuba together and took nearly 100,000 photos of Havana and Santiago de Cuba for Yael's forthcoming book, "Cuba Inside/Out: Theatre and Revolution in the Age of Globalization" (Southern Illinois University Press). The pair then divided the photos thematically, into what has become three distinct shows: on drama, tourism and revolution. The work depicts the drama of the street, as well as within Cuban theatres. The combination of excerpts from Prizant's book, quotes from recent Cuban plays, and Stackowicz's stunning photographs provoke a reconsideration of how lived experiences influence art.

"The photos are both insightful and stunningly beautiful, which I believe is the work of the place, not the artist. Each photo has the ability to convey layered messages, and the meanings seem to change as much as the richly saturated streetscape," says Stackowicz.

The exhibit is free, family-friendly and open to the public. For more information, contact Langlab.admin@gmail.com.

Biographies:
Christopher Stackowicz attended the University of Notre Dame where he received a B.F.A. degree in studio art with a minor in art history. He then received his M.F.A in installation and drawing from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, with a concurrent graduate certificate in cultural studies. He teaches several classes at Bethel including senior thesis, art history, painting, 2D design and color theory.

His artistic specialties are in painting and interactive panoramic photography. His primary area of research is creating interactive photographs and applications for display, research and as a vehicle for better understanding the site of antiquity. He has worked for the past 13 years as an editor, photographer, web designer and interactive media specialist for Dr. Robin Rhodes on his Greek Architecture at Corinth project. He has also worked on a variety of projects for the American School of Classical Studies in Athens as a conservation photographer and as the editor and coordinator for the upcoming Athenian Agora Site Guide iBook, the interactive panoramic photographer for the SHARP project at Korphos and for the Snite Museum.

As a painter, his work is owned by numerous collections and has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. He had and has participated in over 100 shows since his MFA in 2002. Stackowicz is very active in the local arts community, and his work can be seen all over town. He is currently working on the Marian devotional ceiling fresco at Queen of Peace in Osceola and the outdoor public mural at Bar Louie at University Park Mall in Mishawaka.

Yael Prizant is a dramaturg, translator, teacher and advocate for the arts. Her primary area of research is Cuban theatre since the fall of the Soviet Union, and she translates the work of Cuban playwright Abel González Melo. She studied dramaturgy at UMASS Amherst and worked as a literary manager in Los Angeles for many years. In 2007, she earned her Ph.D. at UCLA and currently works as an assistant professor at the University of Notre Dame. She is also a proud co-founder of Ultreia, Inc., a nonprofit organization that supports artistic and educational endeavors that serve the South Bend community.

Andy DeJaco, a former Electrical Engineer in the wireless industry and a High School Calculus, Statistics, and Computer Teacher for the last 9 years, is taking his Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus Courses online starting in the fall of 2012.

Give your college bound Homeschool student that mathematics advantage with a rigorous full year AP Calculus AB course or a 1/2 year Advanced Placement AP Calculus BC course.

These courses will meet online with Mr. DeJaco each day Monday - Friday for a 50 minute fully live and interactive video conferenced class where questions are answered, solution method and approaches are discussed, and connections are made with previous material.  Additional formal lectures are online for students to listen to outside of the morning class.  Homework and quizzes are graded online.  Paper tests will be given and returned for chapter, unit, and practice AP tests.

Essentially, the online class will follow the same schedule and curriculum that Mr. DeJaco has used successfully for the last 9 years in his St. Charles Preparatory School classroom. With 8 years of AP Calculus results, Mr DeJaco's students earn a 5 on the AP Calculus test 93% of the time.

Please visit www.calculusconquered.com for more information about the course offerings starting in August 2012

The creator of it has added lots of new freebies and some new sections to her website:
http://funtasticunitstudies.com/  including a section that lists chapter books to help with studying history.

Here's some information on The Pilgrim Adventure, so that you can see what book the activities were designed for:

Finn & Ginny's parents are lost back in time, and the two young twins have decided to go back to early America to find them. Their search takes the twins to the Mayflower where they discover that the Pilgrims had far more adventures than they had ever realized.

This first book in the Our America series is designed to teach the real story of the Pilgrims in such a fun way that the reader won't even realize that it's educational. The Pilgrim Adventure is based on actual accounts written by the Pilgrims themselves, and kids who read this book will find that by the end of the story they may know more about the Pilgrim's adventures than their parents do.  Ages 10 and up.

GENERAL INTEREST

G1)  Acronym Contest

G1)  Acronym Contest

Here is an interesting contest....students can have fun practicing their English skills to write acronyms.  The prizes are a bit off the wall, too.  At least they can be motivated to learn where Gozo is located!  The link to enter is in the article below.  Have fun!

Funny Acronyms - to make you Smile
Acronyms are usually formed by using the initial of each word in a group, such as from :North AtlanticTreaty Orgnaization we derive the acronym NATO. I find it relaxing to spend some time creating funny acronyms just for fun, obviously.

However, the list below is populated by 'reverse acronyms', I call them. They are fun to think about and build, because we start with the acronym by supposing that each word IS the acronym and we try to bring out a meaning of some sort, Thesaurus style - sometimes funny and often far-fetched. Actually the 'reverse acronym' is not a meaning but rather an 'association', a group of words that may make you think of the word. A 'CAT' is a "Crawl Attack Tactician". The 'association' is important because it would not be interesting at all just to say that CAT stands for "Category And Type", for example.

Can you build an Acronym? Can you out-do me, perhaps? I'm sure that you can. Build 5 'sensible' acronyms of your own and enter a Competition to win a Great Prize. I will also be pleased to include them in my webpage about acronyms too if I like them.

GENERAL INTEREST

G1)  Spain - Swimming Mission Trip with Landry Academy

G1)  Spain - Swimming Mission Trip with Landry Academy

Summer 2007..

In the Summer of 2007 we did a "swimming mission trip" to Caceres, Spain. It was a group of about ten high school age swimmers and some parents. We worked with missionaries and the Caceres, Spain swim team. One of our objectives was just to spend time with the Caceres swim team and their families - none of them were Christians.

We practiced with the swim team daily and swam in two meets with them (in beautiful outdoor pools). During the day, we spent time ministering with the Caceres missionaries. We also with the swim team, visiting local areas of interest, such as Merida. Founded in 25 B.C., it's the site of many Roman ruins - very cool!

There were lots of shared meals, shared fun, and they saw Christians in action. Most had very skewed perceptions of Christians and Christianity. A very small percentage of people in Spain are believers. For our swimmers, swimming in Spain, with Spanish swimmers, was beyond cool!

-- This Trip was Fun and Very Powerful!

Many friends were made on this trip. In fact, when we took this trip, I (Greg Landry) was president of our swim team and we stayed with the family who was president of their swim team. We became friends and they spent a week with us in North Carolina two years later. We're looking forward to seeing them again. They will be coordinating the swimming aspects of the trip for us.

Summer 2012..

This summer, we will again take a group of swimmers to Caceres, Spain. We will work with YWAM (Youth with a Mission) missionaries and the Caceres swim team.

Deadline to register is approaching.  Details are here..

Heartland Homeschool Prom Features:
Based on an incredible amount of feedback from our amazing 2012 attendees, we have made some changes and  Heartland Homeschool Prom 2012 that we know everyone will love!

~Amazing Venue.  This year's prom venue is located in the very heart of downtown Indianapolis on Monument Circle--The Columbia Club! Built in 1888 as the private club of former president Benjamin Harrison, this is one spectacular location!  The Heartland Homeschool Prom reserved the first three floors just for prom attendees. These floors include the white marbled floor and mahogany filled Grand Lobby, the Mezzanine overlooking the Grand Lobby, and the entire gorgeous Crystal Terrace Restaurant where students will be dining.

~NEW Unlimited Sodas.

~Traditional Dancing to Live Irish-Styled String Music. One of the biggest features that makes us different, and the one that teens from all over Indiana and surrounding states love! In fact, students who didn't know if they would like it commented "I LOVED it!" in our 2011 student survey.  The dancing that we will be doing will range from the Virginia Reel to the Patty Cake Polka.  If you've never danced a day in your life,  you will STILL have a wonderful time!  At the Heartland Homeschool Prom we will have someone there to help us with the dances, so no previous knowledge of how to dance is required!

~NEW a Professional DJ.  The 2012 Prom will be having professional DJ, Terry Mautner, to play pre-submitted (and approved) songs during live music breaks!  No song submissions will be allowed on Prom night--because our DJ will only be playing songs that were pre-submitted by coordinators--so please send song suggestions to music@heartlandhomeschoolprom.com along with a copy of the lyrics. Haven't viewed the song guidelines? Please visit our website under FAQs!

~Gourmet Three Course Dinner.  This meal will be served by waiters in the elegance of the full service Crystal Terrace Restaurant, located on the third floor of the Columbia Club.  This historic dining room contains the original marble floors,hand-stenciled ceiling and leaded glass windows overlooking Monument Circle. The meal is a marvelous time for students to get to know other high schoolers from around the Heartland! You can reserve a half or full table for your co-op or special group of friends--visit our website for the details!

~Everyone's Invited.   The Heartland Homeschool Prom is not affiliated with and particular homeschool group--all homeschooled highschoolers (aged 14-19) and their guests are welcome! For the 2012 prom we currently have students from all around the Heartland attending. The prom takes place in Indianapolis because it is centrally located, not because this is just an Indianapolis prom, or even just an Indiana prom.  Students from all around are attending, and you're invited, too!

My name is Brittany Bezick and I am the Youth Leadership School Intern for The Leadership Institute. The Leadership Institute will be holding a Youth Leadership School in East Lansing on April 14-15. This is a great opportunity for high school & college level conservatives to learn how to lead in politics; they will learn all the nuts and bolts of communication and political leadership.

The Youth Leadership School is an intense, two-day training program packed with 23 hours of lectures and exercises in which they will learn how to write press releases, canvass, get out the vote, get supporters, raise money, host speakers, utilize volunteers, and much more. The best part of all this is that it only costs 30 dollars, including food, course materials, and hotel accommodations if necessary.

6) Free 17th Annual Choral Showcase

Bethel College will present its annual end-of-the-year choral showcase featuring Music Ministry Teams, The Collegians and Voices Of Triumph and the Concert Choir. The event takes place Friday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center - Auditorium.

Bob Ham is the director of the Concert Choir and Voices of Triumph, while Jill Hostetler is the director of the Music Ministry Teams and The Collegians. Each group will perform pieces that reflect their goals and personalities. The night's repertoire will include various genres, including gospel, Broadway, classical and contemporary.   "Throughout the 2011-2012 school year, our music groups have been working hard to present great literature in a way that brings glory to God," says Ham. "Whether sacred or secular, our music and our performances hopefully reflect the Creator behind all the music. We've had a wonderful year in terms of music making and ministry."

Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Bethel College department of music at 574.807.7575.

7) Volunteer Opportunities

A) There is a program that is a partnership between Riverwood Mental Health and the Berrien County Courts that works to assist families that are struggling.  Often the teens in the family are acting out and coming to the attention of the courts.  The staff with the program assists the family, one on one, to bring stability.  Sometimes what is needed is a bed to sleep on.  One of the staff members spoke with me today and said she is looking for items for 3 different families:

#1 - a twin bed frame.  She has the mattress; she is just looking to get the youth up off of the floor.

#2 - a queen box spring; she has a frame and a mattress and is looking to complete the set.

#3 - a used washer and dryer or just a washer or just a dryer - they do not have to match.  The dad in the family has a job where his work clothes get quite dirty and he needs to have the ability to wash his clothes.

They are willing to pick up your donation.  Respond to this email with questions and I will forward your name on.
Thank you for being willing to donate an item so a family can find stability.
