G2)  Help a Homeschool Family

For those of you not aware, there is a place on whitehouse.gov for people to submit petitions.  If they get enough signatures (used to be 25,000, now it's 100,000), the Obama Administration will consider the issue.  I find browsing the petitions an interesting educational opportunity (parental supervision suggested).  Lots of fodder for discussions and research.

Right now, there is a petition in support of a homeschooling family from Germany, currently living in Tennessee.  As you may know, homeschooling is illegal in Germany.  This family was persecuted there and was granted asylum in the US due to homeschooling.  They are now in danger of being deported back to Germany, where they face arrest and fines and possibly losing their children because of homeschooling.  The US Justice Department is arguing that homeschooling is not a fundamental right and is fighting against this family's asylum in the US.

You can sign the petition in support of the Romeike family here:  http://wh.gov/sd2U

2)  Michiana Covenant Academy Open House

Michiana Covenant Academy serves the homeschool community and we are opening our doors again for our Annual Open House. Homeschooling does not mean you are alone. Whether you have high school, junior high or elementary students, we can serve you. Five of our instructors have each graduated at least one of their children from homeschool to college. We know what homeschooling is and we want to encourage you on your journey. This means, lots of flexibility. We have classes for students in K-12 throughout the day. We offer science classes with labs, language instruction with labs, writing instruction, art, music, SAT Preparation plus much more. We offer classes one day a week, on Wednesday, and you register only for the class(es) that you want. You register for one trimester at a time which means spread out payments and no long term obligation. If you have more than one child taking classes at different times, we offer a supervised study hall at no extra charge. Come see what we have to offer and how we might be able to serve you. Michiana Covenant Academy's Annual Open House is Thursday, April 25, from 7-8:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to see what projects and art work we have done so far this year and enjoy a time of fellowship. We will have a list of classes to be offered next year and the teachers will be there to answer any questions.  Please visit our website at michianacovenantacademy.org to find class descriptions from previous years, our calendar, and registration forms.

5)  Free Events at Bethel College

Bethel College Orchestra and Wind Ensemble Present Free Chamber Concert

The Bethel College Chamber Orchestra will join the Wind Ensemble to present a free concert to the community on Thursday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center – Auditorium. The orchestra will be conducted by Associate Professor of Music Vicky Tan Warkentien, D.M.M.

"We decided to combine the Chamber Orchestra and Wind Ensemble concerts for three reasons: (1) to free up an evening in a busy time of the year, (2) to combine audiences and (hopefully) have one larger audience for both groups, and (3) to save time for our students who perform in many different groups," says Associate Professor in Music Mike Kendall.

Repertoire for this spring's program includes: "Symphony No. 40 in G minor," "KV. 550" by Mozart, excerpts from "Jeux d'enfants" ("Children's Games") "Op. 22" by Bizet, and "Suite for Trumpet and Strings" by Latham with senior Kayli Savage as soloist.

The Wind Ensemble, directed by Mike Kendall, will be performing a number of exciting works including: Frank Ticheli's "Angels in the Architecture" and David Maslanka's "Give Us This Day." The featured soloist on the program is clarinetist Brooke Victor performing Ennio Morricone's Theme from "The Mission."

"Please come and enjoy the beauty of classical music," says Warkentien, D.M.M.  For more information, contact the department of music at 574.807.7575.

Recital in Honor of Music Professor

Several Bethel College alumni will hold a recital in honor of Associate Professor of Music and Artist-in-Residence Victoria Garrett on Saturday, April 13, at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church,  410 Lincoln Way East, Mishawaka, Ind. This concert is to celebrate Garrett's "retirement diminuendo." She will be decreasing her teaching hours next fall.

Former students of Garrett's, Jessica (Hanel) Satava ('01) and Jared Schwartz ('04), are coordinating this concert which will include a total of 13 of Garret's former students from across the country singing and sharing  stories about the music and life lessons they learned from Garrett.

"Vicky isn't simply a voice teacher, she has been and continues to be a mother to us all. It will be a very special night of song and sharing from some talented singers honoring an incredible teacher." says Schwartz.

This event is free and open to the public.

GENERAL INTEREST

G1)  Endangered Species Learning Opportunity

G1)  Endangered Species Learning Opportunity

This might be a fun research/learning opportunity...and kids can share their opinion and impact policy, too.

In a New York Times op-ed, Cornell Lab director John Fitzpatrick tells the Gunnison Sage-Grouse's remarkable story of discovery and disappearance. Known for centuries to the inhabitants of modern-day Colorado and Utah, it was only formally described as a new species in 2000—despite the bird's flamboyant displays and former popularity as a gamebird. As the bird's numbers continue to fall from changes to its sagebrush habitat, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is weighing listing the species under the Endangered Species Act—a move that would trigger important protections. To aid their decision they've issued a call for public comments, which are due by March 12.

The Acting Company presents Of Mice and Men
Tuesday, March 19, 7 p.m. at The Lake Michigan College Mendel Center

Tickets:          $29.50 full price
$19.50 Student Groups of 20-50 people
$14.50 Student Groups of 50+people

Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winner John Steinbeck's tale of two drifters is one of the most widely read stories in America. Of Mice and Men tells the tragic story of two California migrant ranch workers during the Great Depression. The Acting Company, which brings this classic to life, has garnered critical acclaim on a national scale through 39 seasons of classic, contemporary, and new plays. The New York Times heralds, "The Acting Company endures as the major touring classical theater in the United States."

About the play
George and Lennie have delusions of making enough money to buy their own place. Lennie, a man-child, is a little boy in the body of a man. George is ever cautious of his gentle giant friend, dangerously powerful yet in need of constant reassurance.

Although Steinbeck emphasizes dreams throughout this work, his characters are often powerless, due to intellectual, economic, and social realities. Fate is felt most heavily as George is left to face the question of how to deal with Lennie who, although in great danger, dreams only of their future, of their farm—as the sound of destiny bounces off the mountains.

The Acting Company presents As You Like It
Wednesday, March 20, 7 p.m. at The Lake Michigan College Mendel Center

Tickets:          $29.50 full price
$19.50 Student Groups of 20-50 people
$14.50 Student Groups of 50+people

All the world's a stage…
One of Shakespeare's most frequently quoted passages from one of his most popular fairy tales—a world possible only on a stage. As You Like It is a metaphor of love; its power, madness, danger, humor, and reflection. The Acting Company, which brings this classic to life in modern-day form, has garnered critical acclaim on a national scale through 39 seasons of classic, contemporary, and new plays. The New York Times heralds, "The Acting Company endures as the major touring classical theater in the United States."

About the play
On one level it is a diverting amusement. On a deeper level, it is a journey of discovery, in which the characters gain knowledge of themselves and the world. When Rosalind and Orlando fall in love, they are unable to act on their feelings. Forced to flee for their lives into the Forest of Arden, they find themselves entangled in a beguiling game of love, lust, and mistaken identity in one of Shakespeare's great comedies. Will the forest heal the family feud?

ENCHANTMENT THEATRE COMPANY Presents THE VELVETEEN RABBIT
Saturday, March 23, 2 p.m.

$17 full price/ $12 for groups of 10 or more

"When a child loves you for a long, long time…then you become real." So says the Horse to the Velveteen Rabbit in Margery Williams' famous and much-loved literary classic. A plush rabbit, given as a gift to a young boy, yearns for the day the boy will choose him as his special playmate, so that he can become real. This innovative production combines the theatrical magic and signature style of Enchantment Theatre with the musical magic of Tony®, Emmy® and Grammy® Award-winning composer/arranger Don Sebesky. With an original musical score, life-sized puppets, masks, and magic, Enchantment Theatre Company brings to life this charming tale of love and devotion, creating an unforgettable theatrical experience for the whole family.

Enchantment Theatre Company has produced original theater for school groups and families since 2000, when it was established as a non-profit arts organization in Philadelphia. Building on the more than 30 years of theatrical experience of its artistic directors, Enchantment quickly has become known for high quality imaginative productions, not only in its home city, but throughout the United States and the Far East.
