G5) Servant Leadership Award

Promoting community service among homeschooled teens

HSLDA's Homeschool Foundation is now accepting nominations for its third annual Servant Leadership Award, a program that offers homeschooled teens an opportunity to be recognized for their leadership and selfless service to others.

We will honor three homeschool students for their voluntary community service with a $2,000 cash award presented to each in front of homeschool leaders from across the country at HSLDA's National Leaders Conference in the fall. Each winner will be given an opportunity to share briefly about his or her service.

Do you know a homeschooled teen who qualifies? Teens must be nominated by an adult to receive an application. You may be in a perfect position to encourage a teen by nominating him or her for the award. Last year, community leaders and parents nominated over 80 teens for the award. Their stories inspired us and encouraged us to expect great things from the next generation. Read about the 2017 award winners. >>

Click here to nominate a teen: https://hslda.realmagnet.land/servant-leadership-nomination-form  Nominations are due June 1, so don't delay!

1) Metal Casting Summer Camp at WMU

We are excited to offer a metal casting camp for Kalamazoo area home school students. The course seeks to educate 8th-12th grade students about the valuable career opportunities in metal casting, and will be hosted at WMU's Floyd Hall for engineering and applied sciences.

The course will cover topics such as history and current trends in casting, computer applications, manufacturing, quality control, engineering, and sales of castings.

The course will be run by Dr. Sam Ramrattan, a professor at WMU and Foundry Education Foundation Key Professor. Dr. Ramrattan is respected world-wide in the metal castings industry, and has been honored by the American Foundry Society.

The future of metal casting is very bright. Our graduates through the manufacturing engineering technology program in metal casting enjoy a 100% placement rate in industries world-wide.

Would this camp be something of interest to your families in the Kalamazoo area? Can you help get the word out? Our initial cost estimate for this one-week course would be $250 per student. We are looking to run this in July.
