G2) HSLDA Poetry Contest

"A poet is a nightingale, who sits in darkness and sings to cheer its own solitude with sweet sounds." —Percy Bysshe Shelley

Time to get out your quills and ink-pots! Err, not really. But if you have an affinity for cryptically or literally expressing yourself through rhymes and general writing, or if you enjoy a creative challenge, or if you just love entering HSLDA's contests—why wait? Homeschool students (ages 7—19) are welcome to participate—and every student has up to three chances to place in their category!

And did we mention that winners will receive up to $200 in cash prizes? View the contest info and guidelines here.

Category 1 (ages 7–10): Read the excerpt from Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem "The Cloud" that exemplifies how Romantic poetry often celebrates nature. Write a rhyming poem no more than 20 lines long that praises one of your favorite outdoor places, like Romantic poetry did.

As you see in "The Cloud," feel free to experiment with the perspective of the narrator, like how Shelley writes as if he is the cloud talking. Have fun with perspective!

Category 2 (ages 11–14): Read the excerpt from Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales that exemplifies how Medieval poetry often tells a story in heroic couplets. Write a poem no more than 24 lines long that tells a story in heroic couplets like Medieval poetry does.

Have fun with what story you choose: it can be amusing, tragic, or even a bit random, like a dream sequence. It can be a story you create or a retelling of a well-known story.

Category 3 (ages 15–19): Read the excerpt from Alexander Pope's poem "An Essay on Man" that exemplifies how Neoclassical poetry often instructs about reason and common sense. Write a rhyming poem no more than 32 lines long that explores an application of reason or common sense like Neoclassical poetry does.

Have you ever found yourself in an amusing or difficult situation because of a choice you made for good or bad? Have fun being creative in how you describe in a poem the common sense you've gained from your experiences. Play around with the narrator's perspective—perhaps write the poem from the perspective of someone other than yourself, or from the perspective of an inanimate object that may have witnessed what your poem describes.

Entries due by May 1.  More info: https://hslda.org/Contests/Poetry_rules.aspx

G3)  Free Language Arts Giveaway

Go to Jackrispublishing.com and scroll to the bottom of the home page to enter your email address to be added to our mailing list.  If you do not wish to be placed on our mailing list, just send us an email to sales@GrowingWithGrammar.com with the subject line "Free Giveaway." JacKris Publishing does not sell your information.

At the end of March, we will take the number of entrants we receive, divide that number by 25, and then randomly choose that many winners. For example, if we receive 10,000 entrants, we will give away 400 sets of books (10,000/25).  Winners will be selected randomly from within the entire group of entrants.

The winners will be notified in early April.  Each winner will be allowed to select one set of books of his or her choosing. This is our small way of giving something back to the homeschool community which has blessed us over the years.  Please pass this e-mail along to the members of your homeschool group.  Also, please feel free to send it along to other friends and family members.  The more the merrier!

Thanks, and good luck!

G4) Free St. Patrick's Day Science Activities

Hey friends,

St. Patrick's day is just around the corner and I've been working on creating themed science activities that relate to Leprechauns to make science lessons fun this month. Kids can learn about density as they try to sort real chocolate leprechaun gold from fake wood pieces, investigate light and refraction as they create rainbows, work on engineering a Leprechaun trap and more!

If you want to bring this fun science into your home and homeschool science class check out the free activities here: rosieresearch.com/st-patricks-day-crafts-leprechaun-science-ideas/

I hope you enjoy them and share them with your friends and homeschooling families!

4) Scroll: The Wabash Institute of Theology for Youth -- A Terrific Summer Opportunity

Dear Homeschoolers:

I'm writing from Wabash College to announce a program that may be of interest to some of the young men in your homeschool associations. It is called Scroll: The Wabash Institute of Theology for Youth, and it is scheduled for July 21-29, 2018, on the Wabash campus in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Scroll is an eight-day summer theology program for young men who are current high school sophomores and juniors (i.e. rising juniors and seniors as of next summer). Scroll takes its name from Luke 4:16-19, where Jesus enters the synagogue in Nazareth and reads from the scroll of Isaiah. Using the framework provided by that passage, we focused on theology and poverty last summer, while this summer we will examine theology and criminal justice (Luke 4:18: "liberty to the captives").

Scroll got off to a terrific start last summer. We had an outstanding group of 19 young men, with 8 of them hailing from out of state. Four current Wabash students served as mentors, living with the students in a dormitory and participating in the full set of activities. We spent our mornings on campus in class and our afternoons visiting and serving area churches and ministries focused on poverty-related issues. In the evenings, relevant speakers and films helped us better understand the dynamics of our topic. Participating students were enthusiastic about Scroll, and I'm confident future institutes will also be engaging and impactful.

We are looking for young men who have a solid Christian faith and a demonstrated record of high achievement in the classroom and beyond, who are eager to deepen their theological understanding and reflect on its applicability to important issues like criminal justice. There is no denominational requirement—last summer we had an excellent mix of Protestant and Catholic students—and we welcome applicants from across the Christian denominational spectrum.

Importantly, there is no cost to participate in Scroll—no tuition, no room and board, no cost for off-campus excursions. If students come from out of state, we'll even cover the cost of the flights. For in-state students and those within reasonable driving distance, we simply ask that you pay for the cost of driving to and from campus. Additionally, in order to recruit a diverse pool of applicants and in view of the fact that many high school students need to work over the summer, we give every student participating in Scroll a stipend of $350 to offset possible lost wages.

Scroll is supported by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, and its focus on young men reflects our mission at Wabash College, one of the few remaining all-male undergraduate institutions in the country.

Please think about young men (current high school sophomores or juniors) in your homeschool association, church, community, or beyond who might be interested in Scroll. You can direct them to www.wabash.edu/scroll for more details. Applications are open now, with an April 10 deadline. Don't hesitate to contact me (or have students or parents do so) if you have questions. You can also call or email Ms. Rachel Hassler, administrative assistant for Scroll, at 765-361-6327 or hasslerr@wabash.edu.
