G2) Free Marva Collins Movie

G1) National History Bee

The deadline to sign up for this year's National History Bee is January 24, 2014. The National History Bee is a multi-stage competition that starts in the home. Students take an online exam that compares them to thousands of other young history-lovers across America, and they then advance to Regional competitions in the Spring and eventually the National Finals in June where the winner receives a $5,000 prize!

Many homeschoolers participated last year, and we were so pleased to see them have a great deal of success. We at the National History Bee believe strongly that homeschool students from across America can and should have the same opportunity to benefit from this activity!

We have adjusted our pricing to include a more appropriate and affordable option for individual homeschool students.  We are also introducing separate divisions for middle school and elementary aged students, with separate content specifically designed for each.  Let's put their history knowledge to the test today!

To register, or for more information, go online to www.historybee.com . If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via email (info@historybee.com) or by phone (864-475-1776).

G2) Free Marva Collins Movie

The Marva Collins Story (1981 TV Movie)

Here's one of the best education movies ever made — the true story of Marva Collins, a teacher who became disillusioned with the inner city school, and instead created her own unique "home school" from scratch. While not a "homeschooling" story per se, this vividly demonstrates that the same thing that was wrong with education back in 1975 is the same thing that is wrong today.

This inspirational,  full length movie stars Cicely Tyson and Morgan Freeman and can be streamed online from YouTube.

Benjamin Solomon "Ben" Carson, Sr. is an American neurosurgeon and the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He is an author, a surgeon, and the subject of the movie "Gifted Hands."

Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home with dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper, and low self-esteem appeared to preclude the realization of that dream until his mother, with only a third-grade education, challenged her sons to strive for excellence. Young Ben persevered and today is a full professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and he has directed pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center for over a quarter of a century. He became the inaugural recipient of a professorship dedicated in his name in May, 2008. He is now the Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D. and Dr. Evelyn Spiro, R.N. Professor of Pediatric Neurosurgery.

As Maria tries to befriend the seven children of widowed Captain Von Trapp, she struggles to find her place on a path she wasn't expecting to take. 5) CISV Seeks Students for Cultural Exchange

CISV (formerly known as Children's International Summer Villages) will have an information meeting for all students and parents interested in finding out more about this year's CISV Villages and programs at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21st at the Michigan City Public Library and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22 at the LaPorte County Public Library.  The Village selection is open to all students who are 11 or who will be age 11 at the time of their Village.  The first Village this year begins June 29th.  Selection for all programs is the second weekend of February.  Interested students may get applications at this meeting.

CISV evolved from a firm conviction that lasting peace is possible if individuals and groups can learn to live together as friends.  For CISV, the key to making this vision a reality was to start working with youth.  Programs were developed which offered young people opportunities to meet their peers from other countries and to form intercultural, global friendships.  Locally, programs give people the chance to learn about the cultures in their own communities and explore important themes related to peace and understanding.

Introducing Merlin Bird ID: A New Kind of Birding App
Information overload is the bane of the beginning bird watcher—as anyone knows who has ever flipped through 40 species of sparrows in a field guide. What if an app could quickly tell you which birds are most likely based on your location, date, and a brief description? Not just which birds theoretically could occur near you, but which birds are actually reported most often by other birders. That's what Merlin Bird ID does. And it's free—because we want to make bird watching easier for everyone.

Merlin Bird ID covers 285 of the most common birds of North America (with more on the way). In addition to help with ID, it contains expert tips, more than 1,400 gorgeous photos, and sounds for each species. It's available now for iPhone and other iOS7 devices, and it's coming soon for Android.

2) Page to Stage 2014

Dear Homeschool Educator,

The Macomb Center for the Performing Arts presents the 2013-2014 season of Page to Stage, a theater and literacy program that brings to life curriculum-linked stage adaptations of both new and familiar stories. These world-class productions starring professional actors bring characters from history and literature to the stage, giving voice to words and inspiring young people to find their own voices.

Black Boy - Tue. Feb. 4, 10:00am & Wed. Feb 5, 10:00am

Commemorating Black History Month, this moving one-man production is adapted for the stage from the classic American autobiography, Black Boy by Richard Wright. A tour de force, the actor plays upwards of fifteen characters from Wright's past.  The journey focuses on Richard's hunger for knowledge and his fight to claim his basic human rights in a racist society. Grades 7 and up.  Run time: 60 minutes, with 15 minutes pre- and post- show interactive discussion

The Great Mountain - Thu. Feb 27, 2014, 9:45am & 12:30pm

Young Nuna has started to hear things she can't figure out. Realizing she has inherited the ability to hear the spirits of rushing rivers and soaring mountains, Nuna's grandmother entrusts her to a boatman who brings her to where a glacier is melting and the spirit of a great mountain weeps. In this re-telling of the inspiring Native American story of Jumping Mouse, a young girl discovers the transformative power of nature and the importance of courage. Grades K-7.  Run time: 50 minutes, with a Q & A following the performance

The Snail and the Whale - Tues. Mar. 11, 9:45am & 12:30pm

A tiny snail longs to see the world, so she hitches a lift on the tail of a huge humpback whale. The little snail is amazed by it all, but starts feeling very small in the vastness of the world. One day disaster strikes–the whale becomes beached in a bay. Can the tiny snail save the day? Grades Pre-K and up.  Run time: 50 minutes, with a Q & A following the performance

The Miracle Worker - Thu. Mar. 27, 2014, 10:00am

Few stories are as timeless or reveal the courage and resilience of the human spirit as well as The Miracle Worker. The Miracle Worker tells the story of Helen Keller, deaf and blind since infancy, who finds her way into the world of knowledge and understanding with the help of Anne Sullivan, her gifted tutor. In some of the most turbulent and emotion-packed scenes ever presented on the stage, Helen overcomes rage and confusion to triumph over her physical disabilities. The Miracle Worker is a story of victory over unbelievable odds––accomplished through conviction, perseverance, and love.
Grades 3 and up.  Run Time:  90 minutes, with a Q & A following the performance

More information along with Study Guides for the performances are available on our Website at http://www.macombcenter.com/EducationEnrichment/PageToStage/. Tickets are on sale now at the Macomb Center Box Office (586.286.2021.) Student tickets are $5.00; teacher or group leader is free with a group of 20 or more.
Our entire season can be viewed at www.MacombCenter.com.  If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call.  We hope you are able to bring your students to a performance this season.

3)  IUSB Children's Theatre Presents Shakespeare

If you would like to see the IUSB family-friendly adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, please contact Andrea at andreamom001@gmail.com by Monday January 20th.

IUSB's 2014 children's theatre production performances for schools allows groups of homeschoolers to participate.  To make sure the homeschoolers aren't lost in the crowd, they ask that homeschool families band together to form groups of at least 15.  The group can then make a single reservation and plan attend together. The ushers will hold the group members as they arrive and seat them once everyone is at the theater.

This year at IU South Bend we are celebrating the Bard's 450th birthday with a season full of Shakespeare's glorious stories.  Our February children's theatre presentation is an adaptation of his beloved comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream.  Our play features a group of high school actors preparing to stage the story of Pyramus and Thisbe.  Their play within a play is complicated by their interactions with the fairies who inhabit a moonlit forest.  The farcical schemes of Fairy King Oberon and Queen Titania, along with Puck and the rest of the fairy court, get tangled with the students' play.  The Queen, under a spell from the juice of a flower, falls in love with an ass (who also happens to be an actor in the student play). The hilarious comedy with its physical humor brings the poetic language of Shakespeare to youngsters in their best years of language acquisition.  With their minds still greedy for new words and phrases, what better time is there to feed them a diet rich in Shakespeare's poetry and prose?

The IUSB Theatre Company production of A Midsummer Night's dream is approximately 50 minutes long and appropriate for children of all ages. We particularly recommend our children's theatre productions for kindergarten through sixth grade. Thousands of school children attend our children's theatre production each year, many experiencing live theatre for the first time.

This year's production plays at the IU South Bend Campus Auditorium February 6-14 with performances at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $3; scholarships are available for all students qualifying for the federal free and reduced lunch program.

Successful completion of the 4-H Tractor Operator Program provides a certificate of training from the U.S. Department of Labor required for operation of a 20 PTO HP or greater, garden or agricultural tractor, by 14 and 15 year old youth employed on property not owned, leased or operated by a parent or legal guardian. Certification is also utilized by youth who exhibit and participate in local contests, parades and festival activities.

This schedule includes educational sessions, some driving practice, final written and driving tests, and graduation program. In addition, participants will need access to a computer that is compatible to use a Windows-based CD for part of the assignments to reach the 24 hours of required training to be certified. We require a minimum of 24 hours of instruction and participants must be 14 years of age by the date of the driving test to be eligible for federal certification.

Educational topics include: farm/ranch hazards and safety, tractor component basics, pre-operational procedures, operation basics, tractor-powered implements, self-propelled agricultural equipment, operating on public roadways, basic maintenance and repair, ATV/utility vehicle safety, first aid and emergencies. 6) Michigan Skiing/Snowboarding Programs

Here are two skiing/snowboarding programs that you may want to participate in.  The first is called Discover Michigan Skiing.  This is an affordable learn-to-ski or learn-to-snowboard program offered at 24 ski areas across the state in January.  If you would like to be able to introduce your youngsters to skiing, this is a great opportunity!  The cost is $20 for cross-country skiing, $30 for downhill skiing and $40 for snowboarding and it includes a lesson, lift ticket or trail pass and equipment rental.  It's a wonderful way to get kids out on the slopes in a safe environment.  Plus, adults can participate in Discover Michigan Skiing too.  For more information: http://goskimichigan.com/michigan-ski-programs/discover-michigan-skiing  (Both Bittersweet and Swiss Valley are participating.)

If you have fourth-grade students, they can ski for free!  The Michigan Snowsports Industries Association (MSIA) wants to give Michigan kids an opportunity to get out, have fun and get healthy this winter. This is why MSIA has established a state-wide program which provides every fourth grader in Michigan the opportunity to ski for free. Fourth graders can obtain a "Cold is Cool" Ski & Ride Passport that gives them up to three free lift tickets or trail passes at 20 participating ski areas. 7) Kalamazoo Homeschool Expo

Kalamazoo Area Home School Association would like to invite you to our upcoming Homeschool Expo on March 8, 2014.  This amazing one-day event brings you Todd "The FamilyMan" Wilson, author of Help, I'm Married to a Homeschool Mom, Linda Lacour Hobar, author of The Mystery of History, and Kathie Morriessey, Michigan homeschool veteran and owner of Character Corner.

Attached please find the event flyer.  We are hoping you will join us and spread the word to other homeschool families.

I've also attached an exhibitor application for anyone who has homeschool products or services they would like to promote in our vendor hall.

We are excited to see what God is going to do.

Thank you for your time.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail or call at 269-657-5470.

Blessings,
Bonnie Snell
