Don't forget the Homeschool HUB when you do your holiday shopping.  There is an associate store full of homeschool-related items on our website http://hshub.org/Associate_Store.html  and there's a link on the main page that takes you to amazon.com.  If you want to check out what's for sale at amazon (avoid the rush in stores and have everything shipped right to your home or to friends/relatives who live far away!), then use our link and help out the HUB.  It costs you nothing.  Thank you, and have a wonderful holiday season!

G3)  Free French and Spanish Language Lessons

With nearly 500 public and private school students, as well as homeschoolers, now using the ULAT (Universal Language Acquisition Tool) world language program to learn French and Spanish, the Christmas break is an ideal time to find out just what these students have discovered and what has made the ULAT such an unusually successful language program.  The ULAT's highly unconventional lessons and hours of video instruction enable students to attain oral fluency before ever exposing them to the written language, thus ensuring that they will actually learn to speak their new language and not just be able to explain its structure.

Use of the ULAT will remain open and free of charge throughout the rest of the 2014-2015 school year, after which it will be accessible for a very modest yearly fee.  Take advantage of its free availability now by going to the ULAT's home page and clicking on the "INDEPENDENT" button, selecting the language of your choice and then following the daily class instructions found therein.

G4)  HSLDA Art Contest

HSLDA's 2015 Art Contest is open to all homeschooled students ages 7—19 and runs from now through January. Cash prizes up to $200 will be awarded. View Contest Info & Guidelines.

Our themes for this year's contest focus on the third chapter of Ecclesiastes, which lays out a beautiful poetic summary of the seasons of life, emphasizing that there is a time for each activity and experience. These verses help us appreciate each bend in life's road, even the hard ones. We invite students to consider the following verses, and then create a picture based on their reflections. Students are welcome to consider the verses in both a literal and figurative sense.

Category 1 (ages 7—10): "A time to weep, and time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance." Ecclesiastes 3:4
What things or situations make you laugh? Maybe it's playing with a favorite pet, carving a pumpkin, or eating an enormous slice of pizza! Maybe you're a ballerina, or maybe you just like to dance under God's stars at night. Think about what makes you laugh, cry, or dance and tell us about it in a picture.

Category 2 (ages 11—14): "A time to heal, a time to break down, and a time to build up."
Ecclesiastes 3:3
Many things can be broken or built up and healed. They can be small, like Grandpa's old pocket watch or holding a friend's hand. They can be big like the Freedom Tower in New York City or Jesus on the cross. Submit a picture that reflects how the truths contained in this verse apply to your life or the wider world.

Category 3 (ages 15—19): "A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted." Ecclesiastes 3:2
People and living creatures are only a subset of many things that can be born and die, such as friendships, dreams, ambitions, projects, character qualities, and families. What experiences have sown love and value in your heart? What first inspired your dream? Explore how birth and death, planting and plucking up, occur in life, and capture your musings in a picture.

Each student is invited to enter up to two pieces of artwork relating to the theme for his or her age category.

Read the judges' comments from previous contests to learn on what features your art will be judged. Also, view the winning artwork from past years to get an idea of what has won in the past!

Guidelines and entry forms can be found on our website, as well as information about our other annual contests, which include poetry, photography, and essay.

2) Winter Art Classes

Dear Parents, Students, and friends of New Creations,

The holidays are upon us, and I am thinking about the amazing time we are going to have this winter as we explore printmaking. I wanted to give you ample time to consider these classes. Printmaking is the precursor to the whole area of Graphic Design and image explosion that we have in our culture today. Older students will work with carving tools to create  images in linoleum and rubber. Younger students will work with safer methods of pressing an image into Styrofoam. Thank you for your continued support of these classes and allowing me the wonderful opportunity to teach and inspire! Please feel free to send this information on to others who may be interested in the classes.

Blessings,
Gloria Seitz
Art Instructor
