4) Professor Debuts Ceramic Exhibit at Bethel

"Where There Was Nothing, Now There Are Roses"

Associate Professor Suzanne Mauro will debut her installation, "Where There Was Nothing, Now There Are Roses," in Bethel College's Weaver Art Gallery which is located inside the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center. The opening reception is Friday, Sept. 7 from 5-7 p.m. The ceramic sculpture exhibit will run Sept. 8 – Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but will be closed on Sundays.  The show is an extension of Mauro's 2011 show "The Flower Girls" with a theme of spiritual transformation. Mauro describes this show as a three-dimensional composition.

"In a painting an artist will draw out shapes and arrange them in a composition on a flat two-dimensional surface," says Mauro. "I am in essence doing the same thing, only I am making all of the visual elements or forms out of clay and then arranging them in the gallery space to try and capture the vision I have in my mind."

The forms in the show are a combination of porcelain and stoneware clay. Mauro has combined all ways of making three-dimensional forms that she's learned during the last 15 years of her ceramics career: wheel throwing, slab, slip-cast fabric and pinching.

"What I have learned the most is that in order to make incredibly, visually dynamic forms out of clay, you have to be able to incorporate many different methods of formation in a way that the processes become hidden and may only be evident to the maker," says Mauro.  Most people who are familiar with clay think of it only as a material with utilitarian potential, which means if you work with clay you must make dishes or pottery, says the sculpture artist.  "I would hope people would walk away with a new understanding that clay is a material with unlimited potential and with a little thought and ingenuity, the artist can use this material to visually communicate many important ideas," says Mauro.

Mauro grew up in South Bend, Ind. She graduated from Purdue University with a B.A. in fine arts with a minor in psychology in 1999. She attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated in May 2003 with an M.F.A. in studio art concentrating in ceramic sculpture. After completing graduate school, Suzanne attended St. Mary's of-the-Woods College where she earned her Indiana State Teaching License. She spent four years teaching art to students in the South Bend Community School Corporation. Suzanne teaches a variety of classes at Bethel including ceramics, 3-D design, drawing and art education for elementary school teachers.

This is the college's first time to host the Taste of Home Cooking School.  "We are excited that we have been able to bring it here and expect a packed house" says Lisa Greco, Bethel's director of conference services.  Vendor Exhibits in the Great Hall begin at 4:00 p.m.  Cooking Show in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel begins at 6:30 p.m.

GENERAL INTEREST

G1) Free Grammar Curriculua

G1) Free Grammar Curriculua

This site offers 5 chapters free:  http://www.grammarnation.com

This site offers a free multi-year curriculum for free: KISSGrammar.org

KISS begins by teaching students to identify subjects, verb, adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases in sentences that they actually read and write. It then adds grammatical constructions until students can intelligently discuss the function, punctuation, style, and logic of almost any word in any sentence. You'll find that KISS exercises are based on real sentences from students' writing and from stories, poems, etc. that they might read.

The KISS homepage is at KISSGrammar.org. You will probably be most interested in the Printable Workbooks page at http://home.pct.edu/~evavra/kiss/wb/PBooks/index.htm There you will find free MSWord workbooks that include instructional material and exercises. As a companion to each workbook there is an "AK" analysis keys book for teachers. There are also two discussion groups for KISS. See:

We Heart Teachers Box Sale!
Saturday, August 18th, 2012 10am-4pm

Local Educators:
Fill a box with kids' books for only $10!
Up to 200 kids' books can fit in one box, depending on the sizes of the books.
The only requirement: the box has to close.

We're also expecting visits from Kona Ice so you can purchase snowcones (bring cash!)
as well as Texas Roadhouse (South Bend) with resources for teachers to help encourage students to read!
Be sure to ask Nicole from Texas Roadhouse about their Teacher's Day in September.

Who is an educator?

    Home school parents
Teachers (includes student-teachers, substitutes, teachers' assistants, etc)
Librarians (public, academic, K-12, it doesn't matter)
    Ministry workers
    Day Care providers
Anyone else who can convince us they'll use the books for educational purposes

What do you mean by "kids' books?"
We'll have everything from baby books through high school reading available. Most books fall into the PreK-6th age group.

Can I earn free boxes like last year?
Yes! You can earn one Buy One, Get One Free Coupon for every 20 people you forward this message to. Please feel free to forward to local news groups and/or  your school's administration to be sent to all teachers. Here's the catch: you have to copy me (molson@betterworldbooks.com) on your forward(s). And it has to be sent before Saturday, August 18, 2012. Claim your coupons at the sale on Saturday by asking Mary Olson (that would be me!). You will be packing your free boxes. IMPORTANT: Be sure to sign your first and last name to your forwarded email so that I know who the coupon goes to!

What do I need to bring?
You'll need your payment, yourself, and a chunk of time to dig through thousands upon thousands of kids' books! Boxes, box tape, and books to dig through are provided.

How do I pay?
Cash is easiest (it's $10 exactly per box) and will be taken outside where the box sale is held. Credit Card payments can be taken in the Outlet Store. You can purchase as many boxes as you like.

Where is the sale?
The sale will be under the awning of the front building that you pass on your way to the Outlet Store. We'll have staff around to help you park. The Outlet will still be open, but Outlet inventory does not count for the box sale.

What if it rains?
We're covered. But you might want to bring your umbrella!

I can't wait to see you all there and to enjoy this amazing event with you!

As always, please just email me back if you'd like to be removed from this email list. If this email has been forwarded to you, and you want to know more about sales at the Better World Books Outlet Store, just send a quick email to molson@betterworldbooks.com asking to be added to our email list. 4) Theater for Children and Young Adults Fall Classes Starting

Fall Classes are starting next week August 23, 2012.  If you haven't registered then please fill out the online form on our website.  If you have registered with the Niles partnership program then you still must fill out the health and contact information online or email/call me to let me know you will be attending and fill out the form when you arrive for the mandatory parent/student meeting.

The first theatre class will be Thursday August 23, 2012 from 6-7:30p.m.  The first 20 minutes the students and parents/guardians will have a mandatory meeting.  Parents are welcome to stay for the rest of the class or leave and come back after the parent meeting.  These classes will be held at the Community Congregational Church on Cleveland Rd. (approx. 1 1/2 mile south of the State Line Rd.,  the first block east of 933 on Cleveland Rd, just behind 1st Source Bank)

If you are taking or interested in taking Guitar, Ukulele, Voice or Keyboard Classes please register online with a notation of the lessons/classes your student will be attending.  These students and their parents must also attend the mandatory meeting on August 23, 2012 at 6 p.m. The students are welcome to stay for the remainder of the theatre class that evening.

Class fees will need to be paid in full at the first meeting if you have one student.  If you have multiple students in the same family then 1/2 will need to be paid at the first meeting and the rest on September 27, 2012. Any other arrangements to pay must be approved prior to the August 23, 2012 meeting.

We have already scheduled some great opportunities this semester. These are all included in the semester fees except the band performance, which may have a very small fee depending on our final charges.

1. We will be going to the music studio in the middle of September (I will confirm the date) and the students will have the opportunity to both record something they have prepared and learn about running the recording studio as well. The owner of the studio has performed nationwide for a lot of the top country and gospel groups.  He will also perform for us and show us the basics on the steel guitar.
2.  We will be hosting a top teen band and a top gospel artist in class.  This will allow your student up front exposure to their music, their stories, get their pictures taken and have one on one discussions with the artists.
3.  Kristie Worfel, a national known mime artist who studied with some of the greatest mime artists overseas will also be here for a class in October.  She give the class great tips on how to handle their body language and fitting the image of their part of the cast as well as wonderful mime experience.
4. We also will have two very wonderful theatrical artists who will teach a class in stage combat.  This is such a great learning experience and it's a ton of fun also!  My girls have taken this class and it's amazing what they learn in one class!
5. Just in time for Christmas we will be hosting a talent show and everyone in the class is welcome to participate.  I will help them study and prepare for the category in which they choose to participate. This will be a juried talent show and will actually have prizes awarded for the top three placements in a category.  This talent show will be open to the entire community and we are working on getting a couple of judges that will delight the students!
6,  We will be having a full theatrical production at the end of the semester and I will have these dates by August 23 at our first meeting.

These classes are packed with everything you can imagine and a bargain of opportunities that you simply can't get in our region.  We are very thankful to have the opportunity to teach your student and help them learn not only acting, singing and dancing but also help them be proficient in presentation and social skills which will help them in
any endeavor they choose for their lives.

Everyone who is taking any of the fall classes will be invited to join us at the Blueberry Festival Sept 2, 2012 on the main stage as we perform some songs from Camp Rock and a variety of other genres of music, dancing and a few skits.  We will be teaching this to the newcomers over the next couple weeks if you are interested in your student being part of this opportunity.  Please confirm if your student/students will participate at the Blueberry Festival!

Please feel free to call or email me with any questions/concerns/discussions!  I would love to talk to you!  Do you facebook, text or tweet?  Please email me with your preferred contact method and we will let you know all the latest via your method of communicating.  I can't wait until August 23, 2012!

The service groups who volunteer will be assigned a section of the Zoo to decorate with carved pumpkins. From Thursday October 25 to Sunday October 28th over 12,000 people will see your creations.

There are only ten spots available! Groups that help the first year will have priority next year. This is going to be the #1 tourist event in South Bend in future years.

I called and talked to the man in charge about this for my Girl scouts. I would like to know if the entire Michiana area Homeschoolers would like to carve a pumpkin and have a spot? All I would need is a definite yes that you will be there with a pumpkin and a few hours of time to help at your convenience during the day of the 23 and or the 24th prior to the event. I only need a head count so that he knows how much room to set aside. Anyone interested? Email  tjgee03@yahoo.com

10) Sports, Writing, Photography, and/or Movie-Making Classes

The following classes organized by the Homeschol HUB for homeschool students may be paid for through the Niles or Berrien Springs partnership programs (at no cost to you) or by individuals.

Photography

This class will teach students the basic principles behind design and composition in art, as well as the fundamentals of photography. We will focus on composition, framing, color, exposure, expression and styles in design, as well as the principles behind light capturing and the mechanics of photography. Reading materials and handouts will be distributed in class. Students must have a camera that allows manual control over ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed. They may use a camera they own that fits these parameters or one will be provided for use during the class. Students will need access to their own laptops with Gimp (a free photo editing software). This editing software will be uploaded onto their computers by the instructor when it the laptop is brought to class.

Creative Expressions

This class will help students learn to convey thoughts and emotions through writing for today's "connected" world in ways that will be well received by their audiences. Scripts for digital presentation, blogging, and web sites will be explored. In this workshop based class, students will be given exercises to hone their writing and their ability to integrate it with today's technology tools. Most reading materials will be provided for in class reading. If additional books are necessary students will be given a list of books to choose from which should be available at local libraries. Progress will be determined by improvement rather than meeting a standard. That way each student will have his or her own goals to set and meet. Students should be prepared to turn in digital copies of their work each week.

Video Production I (fall or spring semester)

The purpose of this class is to help students gain a basic understanding of digital video production. Students will learn the technical aspects of camera work, lighting and basic video and sound editing. Students will also be encouraged to improve their creativity and story telling skills. This is a semester long class.

Video Production II (spring semester only)

This is a project-based class.  Students will work on making their own video project alone or in teams.  The teacher will advise and oversee the projects, teaching whatever skills the student needs to achieve his/her vision successfully.  This is a semester long class.

Individual Sports

This class is designed to be offered for an entire year, encompassing two sports: tennis and skiing. Students may take tennis all year or combine tennis and skiing.  From September to December, students will have tennis instruction, from December to March the student will ski (at either Bittersweet Ski Resort in Kalamazoo or Swiss Valley – student's choice), and then from March to June it's back to tennis. Tennis instruction will have a specific day and time of meeting, while the skiing will be of the skier's choice within the specific number of allowed skiing days.

MATH CURRICULUM FREE TO GOOD HOME

Years 2, 3, and 5 curriculum for Investigations in Number, Data, and Space. Published by Pearson. Excellent math curriculum I used with my kids. The Berrien County Math/Science Center used to recommend usage of this curriculum -- and if you use it you'll understand why. It is NOT a curriculum for the hands-off type of teacher. It is intensely hands-on and teacher involved, but well worth it as it really is a great curriculum for number sense and comprehension (which in the long run is what we want, right?). If you have many children, even better as many of the activities can be group efforts. I cannot say enough about this curriculum. I'm pretty sure homeschoolers don't use it because it's cost prohibitive -- EXPENSIVE!!!  But, I'm willing to let it go to the family who really like math. Using this really paid off for our family. Please contact me: Beth Denton, farmgirlbeth@gmail.com . Give it some thought and then email.
