G2) Appleseed Rifle Marksmanship Events

This might be an interesting opportunity to learn more about the Revolutionary War and hone your marksmanship skills, if you own a rifle.  It is open to kids, women, and people with special needs.

Project Appleseed is a nationwide family-friendly rifle marksmanship course which combines the teaching of fundamental rifle marksmanship skills with the story of our American heritage. Project Appleseed is an activity of The Revolutionary War Veterans Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to teaching every American our shared heritage and history as well as traditional rifle marksmanship skills.  Our volunteer instructors travel across the country teaching those who attend about the difficult choices, the heroic actions, and the sacrifices that the Founders made on behalf of modern Americans, all of whom are their "progeny."

With nearly 1000 weekend events scheduled for 2011, there's likely one within driving distance. The cost for kids 20 and under is $5 and for their mothers (women) is $10. Poor dad has to pay more – $70 – but there is no serious rifle marksmanship program available elsewhere at anywhere near the cost.

A substantial number of certified Appleseed instructors are themselves home schooling parents and students motivated by the importance of participating in the great American tradition of rifle marksmanship skills, while conveying the significance of our national heritage to other Americans.

We invite you to bring your family, friends, a .22 rifle and some ammunition, and head to an Appleseed near you! To find nearby Appleseed event locations, information on "what to bring" and "how to prepare", or information about hosting a shoot, please visit our main website, www.appleseedusa.org, and the home educator's page.

This is a good fall semester project. It's a science contest where students work in groups of 2 – 4 to simulate real research and development. They study a technology of interest and predict what that technology might be like 20 years from now. Teams explore what is necessary to make their visions a reality.

The contest is open to grades K - 12.  The divisions are K - 3, 4 - 6, 7 - 9, and 10 - 12.  Each project must include an abstract, description, bibliography, and five sample Web pages.  First prize in each division is a $10,000 savings bond for each student on the team, second is a $5,000 savings bond.

1) HANDS ON Health & Nutrition

Ideal for Health and Nutrition credit in your homeschool, these classes are geared for ages 13 and up. Ideally the student has an interest in learning about these things. Imagine having an interested student who comes home and takes over responsibility in your kitchen (a mom's dream come true)! At the very least, your student will begin to understand why we eat to live and not live to eat and what the elements of proper nutrition are and why we should all care about that. These classes are primarily hands on (with the exception of THE BASICS – Class 1, $2.75) and will be chock-full of tricks, tidbits and important concepts. Classes run $7 per class and will last approximately one hour. Moms are welcome to take classes too! Take any classes you are interested in as each class stands alone. The first class is being offered 9/23 at 3pm.

Classes are THE BASICS; RICE & BEANS; HOMEMADE PIZZA AND HOMEMADE SPAGHETTI SAUCE; FRESHLY MADE BREADS, MUFFINS, AND PANCAKES – from scratch!; HOMEMADE DRINKS,HOMEMADE CHICKEN STOCK AND USING A WHOLE CHICKEN

Cyndy has been cooking since she was 15 and grows more passionate about food and health daily. Her journey into healthy foods, surprisingly enough, did not come in her college nutrition class, but started out when seeking alternatives to Ritalin for one of her children. This was 16 years ago. While neither formally trained nor certified in nutrition or cooking, Cyndy has learned a wealth of information and is happy to share. The rest is up to you! Cyndy is the wife of 1 and mother of 4. Two of her children are still at home and are homeschooled. She is grateful to see the two who have left the nest still eat amazingly healthy and one is studying to become a chef.

All classes take place at Cyndy's home in Elkhart near Ash and Day Roads.  For class schedules or to place your student in a class or on the waiting list, email CLHERMS@COMCAST.NET .

Creative Expression for the tech savvy generation

This class will help students learn to convey thoughts and emotions through writing for today's "connected" world in ways that will be well received by their audiences. Scripts for digital presentation, blogging, and web sites will be explored.  In this workshop based class, students will be given exercises to hone their writing and their ability to integrate it with today's technology tools. Most reading materials will be provided for in class reading. If additional books are necessary students will be given a list of books to choose from which should be available at local libraries. Progress will be determined by improvement rather than meeting a standard. That way each student will have his or her own goals to set and meet. Students should be prepared to turn in digital copies of their work each week.

This editing software will be uploaded onto their computers by the instructor when it the laptop is brought to class.
