G2)  Homeschool Penpal Program

Good afternoon!

I wanted to let you know about the HSAMF (Home School Association for Military Families) Pen Pal Program for both military and civilian homeschooled children.

Our Pen Pal Program is a FREE literacy based, traditional letter writing program.  It is a great way to get children writing traditional letters, a skill that is often lost in today's society, as well as make friends with children they would otherwise not have met.

Quite honestly, it has been a great way to work on grammar and spelling with my children, without them even realizing they are "working on school."

If you are interested, or know of any other homeschooling families that may be interested, we encourage you to check out our website, www.hsamf.org Look for the Pen Pal Program under the Programs tab.

We also want to encourage you to sign up for our e-newsletter.  Penpal Tidbits is a bimonthly publication that will give you fresh ideas to share with your penpal. For example, August 26th is Australia Day, so the children are encouraged to learn something new about Australia and then share it with their pen pal.

Don't forget to share this with your homeschool group and social networks.  Thank you so!

If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know!

~ Shannon Hudson

G3)  Free Online SAT/ACT Prep classes

I'll be offering some free SAT and ACT prep classes for some upcoming tests.

A good score on the SAT or ACT can make the difference between getting a $10,000 or $40,000 scholarship -- or getting nothing. It can make the difference between getting into a college you want -- or settling for a second or third. Start early, work hard.

ACT: February 7
Class on Tuesday and Thursday from 100 PM until 200 PM,  January 27th and 29th, February 3rd and 5th. Note: the 1 PM start time is Central Time, Texas time. Please adjust for your time zone.

SAT: March 14.
Class on Tuesday and Thursday from 100 PM until 200 PM, February 17, 19, 24, 26; March 3, 5, 10, 12. Note: the 1 PM start time is Central Time, Texas time. Please adjust for your time zone.

ACT: April 18.
Class on Tuesday and Thursday from 100 PM until 200 PM, March 24, 26, 31; April 2, 7, 14, 16. Note: the 1 PM start time is Central Time, Texas time. Please adjust for your time zone.

Classes will be held online using WebEx. You can find out about it here:
http://www.webex.com/  You can use this link to make sure your computer is ready to go: http://www.webex.com/test-meeting.html

You need do nothing but send me an email address to which I should send a WebEx meeting "invite," and identify the name of your student.

Sincerely,
Michael Gold

G4) Beyond the Mask

Beyond the Mask (created by homeschool graduates Aaron and Chad Burns of Burns Family Studios) brings the art of Christian film making to a whole new level. It's a Hollywood-quality, family-friendly action film set just before the Revolutionary War that brings history to life in a faith-filled adventure that focuses on redemption, liberty, and the true freedom found only in Christ.

Homeschoolers nation-wide are signing up to bring this culture-changing film to their communities. You can go to our website to view the exciting theatrical trailer, and find out easy it is to bring Beyond the Mask to a theater near you!
www.beyondthemaskmovie.com

We have also just released a special "Homeschool Trailer" with Aaron and Chad Burns explaining how their homeschooling experiences prepared them to create a feature film like Beyond the Mask.  Encouraging commentary is given by Michael Farris and three other national homeschool advocates. This trailer will be a blessing and encouragement to homeschoolers everywhere.  Follow the link to watch it now on Vimeo.  http://vimeo.com/117182822

The IoT World Forum Young Women's Innovation Grand Challenge is a global innovation challenge open to young women between the ages of 13-18. The aim of the challenge is to recognize, promote, and reward young innovators as they come up with new uses for Internet of Things technologies.

2) Florida Family History Tour

A Christian Historical Tour for the Entire Family!

This February, Landmark Events is returning to Florida for our popular Pirates, Presidents Conquistadors and More Tour! History isn't as neat and tidy as we would like it to be. Hollywood and humanistic textbook authors have only added to the confusion. Our children need help in discerning the truth. Join Landmark Events historian Bill Potter as we unravel the myths and legends, and interpret these sites from a biblical perspective. These are some of the subjects we will explore:

Pirates: Truths and Myths

Hollywood loves pirates, those dashing rovers pursuing adventure and treasure on the high seas. Pirates are fun, passionate and so goodhearted they would give you the shirt off your back. Were real pirates anything like that, or were they more likely to take your shirt? — after they run you through!

The Fountain of Youth

Last year, Mr. Potter reminded us of the eternal truths at the "Fountain of Youth" — the possible landing site of Spanish conquistador and explorer Ponce de León:

"Well after [Ponce de León's] death, historians claimed that he was seeking the 'Eternal Fountain of Youth'. Such a quest is characteristic of unregenerate man in search of eternal life outside of the divinely ordained means of salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ alone. Many pagan cultures have an eternal life mythology in which man can attain immortality through some heroic deed or a life of good works, but Scripture tells us that there is no other name under Heaven whereby we must be saved, than that of Jesus Christ and that salvation is a matter of the Grace of God alone through the divine gift of faith. Everybody wants to live forever — God has provided one way, but only one."

We will dig deeper into these topics and many others as we walk along these historic paths. Join us and enjoy rich fellowship as we examine the plethora of lessons God has given us in the Sunshine State. You'll be glad you did! Some topics we will examine:

• Castillo de San Marcos
• Fort Caroline
• Pirate Museum
• Fountain of Youth
• Olustee Civil War Reenactment
• Huguenots
• Andrew Jackson
• Admiral Gaspard II de Coligny
• Hernando de Soto
• Blackbeard
