MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1)  2nd Annual Homeschool Info Night--free stuff!
2) Annual Meeting
3)  Fencing Class--Urgent Response Needed!
3) World Harmony Run
4)  Fun Family Activities Tip
5) Niles Homeschool Partnership
6) Berrien Springs Parent Partnership
7) Volunteer Opportunities

1)  2nd Annual Homeschool Info Night--free stuff!

Free refreshments will be served!  Please bring any books, curricula, and materials you no longer want that other families might be able to use--we will have a free exchange table--bring what you don't need and take what you can use!  The 2nd Annual Homeschool Info Night will be Tuesday August 28th from 6-8 at LMC Bertrand in Niles, MI.  If you have a club, class, group, or activity that caters to homeschoolers, you are welcome to set up an info table.  If you are a tutor or teacher or offer any service of interest to homeschoolers, you are welcome to set up an info table.  Contact Diane Day to reserve a spot: joharding_20@yahoo.com.  If you are a homeschooler or thinking of homeschooling or curious about homeschooling, come join us!  It will be a night for info and connection with other homeschoolers.  Feel free to pass this info along to anyone you know who might be interested.

2)  Annual Meeting

The Homeschoool HUB annual meeting will take place at LMC Bertrand at 7:30 pm on August 26th.  If you would like to participate, see hshub.org about how to become a member.  All members are invited to attend.  Anyone curious about the group or interested in becoming a member may also attend.

3)  Fencing Classs--Urgent Response Needed!

We have the opportunity to bring a Fencing Program to our area.  To do so there needs to be a minimum of 30 students. I have attached a link to the Tri-Blade website for your convenience.   http://www.akron-graphics.com/tri_blade/   This program has been embraced in the Gull Lake area.  So much so, they have added it to a list of courses their School Corporation students may choose.

This class will be a multi-aged class. The cost is $13/per hour for the classes. The classes run for 3 hours. I would arrange for him to come down here for 6 weeks for the first semester and then maybe lengthen it to 8 weeks for the 2nd semester if interest continues. That brings the cost to $234 for the first semester. There is an additional cost for the equipment of approximately $107.00 (This is a one time cost).   The majority of these costs would be covered if a Niles Partnership Student would like to elect it for a CR class.

Please contact me if you are interested.  I need to know before August 7th so I can determine if we can bring the program to the Michiana Area. Please email me at blissfamily@nilesschools.org.

4)  Fun Family Activities Tip

If you are looking for something fun to do with your family, check out the "Volunteer Opportunities" section--they often ask for volunteers for festivals and activities that would be fun to attend even if you don't want to volunteer.  This week includes a peach festival and an open house for the Fort. St. Joseph archaeological project, for instance.

5) Niles Homeschool Partnership Program

NEW:  There is no seated class required for students in grades 6-12.  Younger students (grades 1-5) are still required to take a seated class.

2)  Homes for Japanese Exchange Students Needed

Greetings from Michigan 4-H!

I am an Educator with the 4-H Youth Development Program of Michigan State University Extension.  I coordinate an international exchange program which brings a delegation of youth (ages 12-16) from Japan to Michigan for 4 weeks this summer.  I am desperately searching for 3 Michigan families who would be able to host a Japanese student in their home July 22-August 18, 2012.  These 3 Japanese youth were matched with families that are no longer able to host this summer, so I am scrambling to find replacement families at this point!  Families do not need to be involved in the 4-H program in order to host, this program is open to ALL Michigan families!

A flyer with information about the exchange program, as well as the pictures and profiles of the 3 Japanese students who I need to find host families for is available to see here: http://tinyurl.com/6ntzj43

Host families have the option of picking-up and dropping off their Japanese student in Lansing, Grayling, Mackinaw City, or Marquette.  During the exchange, host families are not required to participate in any specific activities, although many host families choose to attend some local 4-H events, county fairs, or get together with other host families in their area.  Host families do not need to be able to speak Japanese in order to host.  The Japanese youth can sleep in a bedroom with a child of the same sex, but they do need to have their own bed or mattress.

The Japanese delegatation will be arriving in Michigan on July 21, so time is really of the essence at this point!  Please call or email me if you would like more information or are interested in hosting!  Families interested in hosting one of the students may contact me to receive an application packet, or they can download a packet from here: http://expeng.anr.msu.edu/uploads/files/83/Host Family Application Packet.pdf

I found your email address listed on a Michigan homeschooling resource website.  We generally have quite a few homeschool families participate in this exchange program, and the hands-on, experiential learning nature of the program fits especially well with the educational philosophies of many homeschooling families.  I would be greatly appreciative if you would consider sharing this with other families that you know who might be interested in hosting one of the remaining students!

Thank you very much for your time and consideration!

5)  HOMESCHOOL SCIENCE 2012-2013

A deposit of $75 is required to hold a spot in either class. (see last page)

Below are the age / grade levels we believe are appropriate for the courses we offer.  There are overlaps allowing for difference in maturity, science interests and math skill level prior to taking a course.

Level      COURSE-Year offered         AGE range             GRADES  MATH SKILL LEVEL

    1          Physical Science-13/14    13-16                     8-10                     Pre-Algebra or Algebra

    1          Biology-12/13                   13-16                     8-10                     Pre-Algebra or Algebra

    2          Chemistry-13/14               16-18                     10-12                  Algebra or Advanced Math

    2           Adv. Biology-12/13           16-18                     10-12                   Algebra or Advanced Math

Courses in levels 1 or 2 can be taken in any order within that level but it is important to take Physical Science before taking Chemistry and Biology before taking Advanced Biology.

Note: It is my goal to continue offering these courses as long as they are needed but the above schedule cannot be considered a guarantee as personal circumstances could dictate otherwise.

Costs – Biology: $ 340 Tuition for the year – Advanced Biology: $400 Tuition for the year – Lab costs for either class: $90 approximate for the full year.  The $75 deposit goes toward these lab costs.

Looking for a group?  Join the HUB!  We need you.

The HUB is a volunteer organization.  Without the support and participation of homeschool families, we can't function effectively.  There are several benefits of membership including a travel club and a resource library that includes things like books, games, laptops, video cameras and other items to borrow. Members receive first chance at events and classes when availability is limited.  The cost of membership is only $24/year.  Information about becoming a member is on the website at www.hshub.org

ONLINE MUSIC PROGRAM

The Spaulding School of Music is now releasing a new service to homeschool parents where families can learn from home in our unique online environment.  After 20 years of development, the Spaulding Method successfully creates a process that enables any student to learn an instrument "by ear" through a process that is in large part driven and customized by each student.  Our teachers can either teach parents how to teach their children, or teach the children directly; the decision is truly up to the parent and how they would like to experience the process.

Religious individuals can learn music through their preferred selection of music as well.  With the "child directed" approach that we employ, learners that regularly do not learn well in a standard instructional setting tend to excel.

G3) High School Students Sought for Game Program Opportunity

My name is Sam Salo.  As a former homeschooler, my great desire is to tap into the homeschooling world to find bright minds who are interested in the burgeoning field of gaming and gaming's new and cutting-edge frontiers.

In short, Red Letter Calculus is a set of algorithms that are designed around procedural generation of 3D worlds, characters, animation, and artificial intelligent. The end goal is to create a software program, centering around a scripting language, that would facilitate the creation of complete video games with a fraction of current monetary, people, and time requirements.  With a proper team to development this project, each member could be creating complete, triple-AAA quality games with their own hands in as little as one year from the current moment.

At this point, positions aren't paid; more specifically, the initial approach at this point shouldn't be classified as either "paid" or "unpaid".  This is a development project of its own type, with high amounts of immediate academic profit and future business potential involved for everyone on the team.

The website for the project is http://www.redlettercalculus.com/.  I have spent the last year inventing the mechanics of the design, and I am now in need of a small to medium-sized team of able minds to bring the design to complete fruition as a software product and scripting language.  Regarding the particular types of skills I am looking for...

-Teen, highschool, and/or college-aged homeschoolers with knowledge and/or experience in any of the following:
   -OpenGL
   -Unity 3D
   -3D modeling and animation
   -C, C++, C#, and/or assembly language
-General knowledge in graphics programming and theory
-A good grasp of math and physics as they pertain to graphics and gaming
-Knowledge of voxel theory a bonus

Please feel free to contact me with the following information:

Email: samuel.a.salo@gmail.com
Phone: 262-721-88887
Website: http://www.redlettercalculus.com/

I look forward to talking with anyone in the group!

Sincerely,
Sam Salo
