G2) Free Entrepreneurship Class

G1) Brain Warmer Upper

A milkman has two empty jugs, a 5 gallon jug and a 3 gallon jug.  How can he measure exactly one gallon of milk without wasting any milk?

Answer to last week's puzzle:
Ask what is in the "APPLES and ORANGES" box.  If it is apples, then the box labeled "ORANGES" must have apples and oranges (since apples are in the box asked about and the box can't have what its label says) and the box labeled "APPLES" has oranges.  If the answer is "oranges," then the box labeled "APPLES " has apples and oranges and the box labeled "ORANGES" has apples.

G2) Free Entrepreneurship Class

One topic in which many home school families are interested is entrepreneurship.  "Why Have a Business." is a free course I wanted to make you aware of.  It was developed over a two year period working with a Home School coop in Fishers, Indiana, called Northpoint Classes.

It's a "learn by doing" curriculum that can be used by home school families, church schools, or adults seeking to enhance their interpersonal and business skills. We have developed and piloted a curriculum on entrepreneurship that not only helps people learn how to see themselves becoming entrepreneurs, but also gives them a step by step hands on program to learn and apply the principles of how to successfully launch a business.  https://generationselfemployed.zenler.com/

1) Fall Retreat for Young Adults

An Indiana retreat for former homeschool Christian young adults in order to network, fellowship and meet like-minded individuals as well as to encourage homeschooling to future generations is being planned.  This is what we believe to be a first in our state so it would be greatly appreciated if you can share this and get the word out to anyone this would apply to.  We would like this to be an annual event if enough participation can be gained.  Time is of essence as this is occurring the end of October.  We hope it will be a exciting and uplifting weekend for all! Feel free to share/post with your churches.
Thank you for your help in advance!

G5) Article

G1) Brain Warmer Upper

There are three boxes. One is labeled "APPLES" another is labeled "ORANGES". The last one is labeled "APPLES AND ORANGES". You know that each is labeled incorrectly. You may ask me to pick one fruit from one box which you choose.

How can you label the boxes correctly?

Answer to last week's puzzle:
The total the three men ultimately paid is $12, as they get three ones back. So from the $12 the men paid, the owner received $10 and the waiter receives the $2 he pocketed. $15 - $3 = $10 + $2.
.

G2) Emmaus Distance Learning

Beginning this fall is the official launch of Emmaus Distance Learning (EDL). Offering courses through distance learning allows us to expand our mission beyond the walls of our residential campus in Dubuque, IA. Emmaus Bible College is offering accredited online courses to high school juniors and seniors to accelerate their degree completion by taking up to four college level course per year at a drastically discounted rate. High school students can take courses through EDL at the cost of only $100 per credit.

Last spring we piloted two eight-week courses—Survey of Doctrine and New Testament Survey.  Twenty-five students from the U.S., Canada, Suriname, Angola, Peru, and the Netherlands studied with us, increasing their biblical knowledge and growing in their faith while earning academic credit.  This summer we offered two EDL courses to current students—Christian Life and Bible Study Methods and Business As Mission.  These summer offerings provided Emmaus students with the opportunity to accelerate their residential programs of study or add a minor or concentration without extending the length of their program. This fall we are offering two courses: New Testament Survey, a 16 week course, and Christian Life and Bible Study Methods, an 8 week course.

Please forward this message on to anyone who may be interested. If you wish to learn more about this opportunity you can visit us online at www.emmaus.edu/EDL. You may contact us by email at distance.learning@emmaus.edu, or by phone at (563)588-8000 x1212.

Sincerely,
Tom Kook, MBA
Associate Director of Distance Learning
Emmaus Bible College
tkook@emmaus.edu

[Editor's Note:  Both classes offered for fall are 3 credits, so the cost would be $300 each.]

G4)  Free Online Poetry Class

I offer a free, high-school level course in Poetry to homeschooled students in grades 7-12! The course runs 15 weeks (one semester) and earns students 1/2 credit in high school English.

Poetry is fast becoming a lost subject in the United States, if not throughout the world, because people don't understand its value in education! Often homeschooling parents are afraid they don't know how to teach poetry and their children are afraid they won't understand poems they read, or worse yet, that they'll have to write poetry!

Yet, many youth are exposed to poetry on a daily basis. In fact, it's often an important part of their lives without even realizing it. How so? Music lyrics!  While not all poetry can be set to music, most music lyrics are typically poetic—providing inspiration and emotions about numerous topics!

Understanding poetry helps students develop their critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as their creativity and innovative abilities—all of which are in high demand in colleges and businesses throughout the United States. In addition, poetry helps students develop their prose writing skills. All of this is possible because poetry views and describes the world around us in ways that prose often fails to properly express. Comparing the same information written in prose with how it can be written in poetry and vice versa is an eye-opener for even the most skeptical student.

Poetry provides the mental insights that are invaluable no matter what career a student plans to pursue. For students who want to be writers, poetry needs to be an essential aspect of their education. Because I feel so strongly about the value of poetry for educational purposes, I offer this free poetry course, which has been enjoyed by parents and students alike. The details are below. Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have at dbyers3@centurylink.net

COURSE NAME: Introduction to Poetry
CREDIT: One-half credit in English. In order to earn the ½ credit for the course, the student must successfully complete all required assignments in the timeframe indicated and earn a passing grade. Once your child successfully completes the course, I will provide a transcript for you to use for your official records. Students who do not complete the course will NOT receive a transcript.
GRADES/AGE GROUP: This course is for high school students grades 7-12. I don't ask the student's age, so it is up to you to determine if your child is ready for this course.
DATES: The class begins when you want to have your child start and runs 15 weeks; the class runs Monday to Sunday each week.
DELIVERY: The course is conducted entirely via email in an asynchronous format: Students do not need to be "online" at any particular time or date.
COST: FREE. Parents need NOT purchase any other courses from me to take advantage of this offer. No hidden costs. No further commitment.
MATERIALS: There are no books to buy. I will provide all materials via email and through the use of Internet sites that I've pre-selected.
ASSIGNMENTS: Students will read and learn to analyze/understand a variety of well-known poetry—all subject matter and language appropriate. If parents have any concerns about any poems during the course, they can contact me for alternative poems. Students will also read and analyze poetry they find in the lyrics of songs that they like; I will assume that parents have pre-approved this material selected by their children. If I'm uncomfortable with the lyrics, I will let the student and parents know. Students will also have writing assignments in which they translate poetry to prose, as well as prose to poetry, in order to learn about both.
GRADING: Students are graded on a scale of 0-100 and A-F. Students are graded according to level of effort and general writing (prose) skills with each assignment given the criteria that will be provided in the course syllabus provided after registration and before the course begins. Students are NOT graded on their creativity nor about right or wrong answers when analyzing/understanding a poem.
HOW TO REGISTER: All you need is to complete and send me the registration form found on my site. For the name of the course, simply enter in Free Poetry Class.
