G1) Brain Warmer Upper

This week's puzzle:

The king of Persia offers a guest a tour of his city. As the two of them are walking, the king points at a beggar with a donkey and says, "that man there is the richest man in the city apart from me."  The visitor asks,"how?"  The king replies, "well, he seems to be smuggling something, but we don't know when he does it," so the minister comes up with the idea of having guards search him whenever he goes in or out of the city but this plan does not work.

What does the man smuggle?

Answer to last week's puzzle:
The letter N.

G2) Scotland Trip with Landmark Events

William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. John Knox and Samuel Rutherford. You know their names, but do you know their true story? For two weeks in September, our experienced guides Bill Potter and Colin Gunn, will lead an unprecedented providential history tour of the land of the ancient Picts and Celts in Scotland. We will follow the footsteps of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce to the battlefields, castles (especially castles!), and memorials of their bygone era. We will recite the history of the godly Covenanters who met in the fields and defied tyrannical monarchs to the death.

3 Options: Lowlands or Highlands... Or Both!

Our paths will lead us to the lowlands and the highlands and the isles. Our Lowlands leg includes Edinburgh, Stirling, Glasgow, Hamilton, St. Andrews, Lanark, Bannockburn, Dumfries and much more, while the Highlands leg incorporates Culloden, Loch Ness, Fort William, Glen Coe, Kilmartin, Inverness, Mull and Iona! Can't decide? Choose "The Whole Haggis" and go on both legs... and save $500 per person!

G3) Homeschool Days at Newport Aquarium
G4) Duke Summer Programs for High School Students
G5) Poetry Contest

G1) Brain Warmer Upper

This week's puzzle:

A traveler comes to a fork in the road which leads to two villages. In one village the people always tell lies, and in the other village the people always tell the truth. The traveler needs to conduct business in the village where everyone tells the truth. A man from one of the villages is standing in the middle of the fork, but there is no indication of which village he is from. The traveler approaches the man and asks him one question. From the villager's answer, he knows which road to follow. What did the traveler ask?

Answer to last week's puzzle:

The liquid was water.  Pumice stone floats in water.  Ironwood sinks in water.

G2) World Children's Festival

We invite your participation in and support for the world's premier children's celebration—the 5thWorld Children's Festival—this July 4th weekend at The National Mall in Washington, D.C.

First launched in 1999 as the "Olympics" of children's imagination and co-creation, the WCF has grown into the world's premier children's celebration and a permanent quadrennial event in our nation's capital. The WCF advances a grassroots movement for children's creative and empathic development sparked some twenty years ago by the International Child Art Foundation as the building block for universal prosperity and peace.

Young musicians and performers can apply to showcase their talents on The National Mall.  Educators and artists can apply to host a workshop or activity. You may decide to support the children and their world festival.

The WCF2015 is a most powerful experience for children schooled at home by parents. Many parents worldwide subscribe to our ChildArt magazine to foster their children's creativity and global understanding through the arts > http://www.icaf.org/childart/.

You and your family are most welcome to come participate in the WCF2015 free-of-charge.  If you prefer to join the two-week WCF Summer Camp instead, please see:  http://worldchildrensfestival.org/summercamp.html. We look forward to your participation and support.

G5)  Poetry Contest

How better to celebrate National Poetry Month this April than by giving your children a creative incentive to write a poem of their own!

HSLDA's annual spring Poetry Contest offers all homeschooled students ages 7–19 a place to have fun practicing their poetic techniques in a creative response to one of three classic poems.  Open to HSLDA members and non-members alike and offering cash prizes upwards of $200, this contest promises to be a fun, educational experience for all!

This year, our themes for the three age categories focus on the whimsical, even zany, side of poetry:

Category 1 (ages 7–10): "Green Eggs and Ham" (excerpt) by Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss's poem "Green Eggs and Ham" has become an American favorite, beloved for its humorous repetition and wacky illustrations. Your assignment is to read the excerpt and write a new, creative continuation of this zany poem, picking up right from where the excerpt leaves off! Keep the original rhyme scheme of AABB and keep your poem's length to no more than 6 quatrains.

Category 2 (ages 11–14): "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll
In 1871, Lewis Carroll published one of the best known English nonsense poems in his fanciful sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.  Titled "Jabberwocky," the poem uses nonsense words and whimsical language to transport Alice and all of its readers to a mythical land where strange creatures dwell.  Carroll paints an unreal world using unreal words, but in doing so, he leaves a very real impression of mystery and mythology that brings the story vividly to life in the imagination! Your assignment is to be creative in a similar way: write a poem of similar length (5-7 quatrains) and rhyme pattern (ABAB or ABCB) that takes place in a fun, perhaps mysterious, new world!  Incorporate some of the techniques Carroll used, including made-up vocabulary, neologisms, words with strong visual impact, and rich creativity of expression and idea.

Category 3 (ages 15–19): "To My Valentine" by Ogden Nash
With his characteristic humorous flair, American poet Ogden Nash uses unexpected metaphors and atypical expressions to convey his nonetheless powerful love in his poem "To My Valentine."  Your assignment is to think outside the box to do the same: defy clichés and write a modern-sounding poem that expresses a positive emotion in an uncharacteristic way.  Let your choice of vocabulary, metaphors, examples, theme, or the very emotion expressed be laced with originality. Follow Nash's rhyme pattern (ABAB or ABCB) and keep your poem's length between 5 and 7 quatrains.

These productions are gospel centered and provide a wonderful opportunity to bring an unsaved friend or family member along so they can hear the truth about our great God and Savior.  Our elementary-aged students will perform Giving Thanks - a story about 3 siblings who focus on trivial things until they discover the true meaning of Thanksgiving.  These children will follow the pilgrim's journey of sacrifices and trials to start a country founded in Christ.

The Lions of Trondheim will be performed by our junior and senior high students.  This play is set during World War II and follows members of the Norwegian Resistance as they conspire with the British to overcome the Nazis.  In the midst of their struggle to maintain their secrecy, they find that their greatest enemy is among them.  Follow these patriots in the village of Trondheim as they work to uncover the mole within and undermine the Nazis without. Both of these dramas are a culmination of a weeklong drama seminar conducted by the Michiana Homeschool Group through the production ministry of The Academy of Arts, a ministry based out of Taylor, SC.  This weeklong seminar has included instruction in stage make-up, lighting, scene construction, costuming, and acting.  The students of MHDG have had their hands in every aspect of these productions.   We hope you'll join us to see all that they have accomplished in one week!!

Did you know Game Design and Development has been a well-established academic specialization in the Media Arts and Science program at SOIC in Indianapolis for many years? Our students have created an alternate and augmented reality game as part of their academic experience that has been played at GenCon and Indy PopCon. This student-made video captures the spirit of the project, http://soic.iupui.edu/projects/return-of-aetheria-silent-movie/  For information about the most recent version of the game, please visit http://returnofaetheria.org/#section-game.

A Pre-Med area of specialization is now offered for the BS in Informatics. Students will be prepared to sit for the MCAT at the end of their junior year. An Informatics degree will serve to distinguish a student in the pool of medical school applications. Those who decide not to go into medicine can continue on for a BS/MS degree in Informatics/Bioinformatics in an accelerated five-year program that will lead to interesting and well paid careers! http://soic.iupui.edu/undergraduate/degrees/informatics/pre-med/
