G2) National Number Knockout

G1) Brain Warmer Upper

This week's puzzle:

Zona, the nutty professor, gathered the class one day for an experiment. Zona began, "I have in my hands a rock and a piece of wood. I am going to place them in this beaker of mysterious liquid, and you may observe what happens." Surprisingly, the rock floated and the wood sank! He turned to the class and said, "My question is: What is this mysterious liquid in the beaker?"

Do you know the answer?

Answer to last week's puzzle:

1. muSTARds
2. froSTINg
3. conSUME
4. taSTABle

G2) National Number Knockout

Aaron Slack, an Alabama homeschooler, loves finding patterns in math. In the March 2014 National Number Knockout (N2K), Aaron put his passion into practice, taking home a $10,000 grand prize and the title of National Number Knockout Champion. HSLDA is a sponsor of N2K, which is a fast-paced mental math competition. We were excited to see Aaron's success last spring and are following the progress of the 2015 championship.

On May 7, 2015, 16 national finalists will compete in Orlando, Florida for the $10,000 grand prize and the title of N2K Champion. The 16 finalists will be high-scoring students ages 9 to 14 from across the nation who submit a Scouting Video to N2K by February 27. This year, National Number Knockout is awarding an additional prize of $2,000 to the champion's educator (that could mean you, home schooling parent!).

N2K gives students more than just a trip to Orlando and the chance to win $10,000; the game helps students improve their calculating speed and accuracy. N2K is easy to play, excites students, and challenges students of all abilities. The competition was founded by 19 home-schooled students who were looking to challenge themselves and help their communities. They improved their own calculating skills and saw their siblings and students in their local communities advance as well.

You can get your children involved and start training for the 2015 National Number Knockout by visiting NationalNumberKnockout.com, where you can learn more about the game, find details of the 2015 championship, and download the free 2015 rulebook. Whether you are playing for fun or training to win, National Number Knockout will help your kids as they pursue math in their studies and in their lives.

The coming years will be filled with challenge and adversity, but those who decide to contend with the current of the culture will have a powerful impact on their world. But we say that your children will be "The NEXT Greatest Generation." This session is for those who believe in a decisive vision for their children.
