1) Free M-DOT Math/Science/Civics Training

The MDOT-TRAC (Transportation and Civil Engineering) Program is available to Michigan 6-12th grade math, science, or civics educators.  Yes, that includes homeschools.  Besides providing free hands-on tools and training, MDOT sponsors an annual bridge competition where students can compete and interact with our top civil engineers.  MDOT is offering two free, local training sessions for educators:

Tues, Nov 17 – Marshall TSC (15300 West Michigan Avenue, Marshall) – 4 seats available
Thurs, Dec 10 – MDOT Region Office (1501 E. Kilgore Rd, Kalamazoo) – 10 seats available

Six SCECH's are available for this free, hands-on training.  The TRAC (Transportation and Civil Engineering) Program incorporates civil engineering related exercises involving these concepts:

1.       Environmental (settling and filtering using flume and screens)
2.       Motion (laws of motion, impulse using motion detector, impulse pendulum, Plexiglas track)
3.       Magnetic Levitation (reaction, polarity, aerodynamics, friction, laws of motion, graphing using magnetic levitation foam vehicles and magnetic Plexiglas track)
4.       Traffic Technology (reaction and perception, velocity/deceleration, braking distance, circuits, traffic dilemma zones, graphing yellow light time, and Excel nested if statements.  Uses hot wheels track, Vernier photogates, circuits)
5.       Bridge Building (structural concepts, tension, compression, deflection, elastic modulus, moments of inertia, member failure by bending, shear force, torsion, equilibrium, using method of joints to understand/calculate force on individual members, structural stability of shapes, displacement constraint, statics, bridge design/build using 2D, 3D, or CAD design)
6.       Safety (critical thinking, decision making, data reliability using posters and Interactive Physics software)
7.       Road Design and Construction (traffic flow, radius, curvature, calculating land cost, road design)

Each teacher who attends the training receives two modules of their choice.  To learn more about TRAC, visit our www.michigan.gov/mdot-trac website.  Call or email me to register for the training.  Schools where a teacher utilizes TRAC can also get involved with MDOT's annual Bridge Challenge Competition, open to 7-12th graders.  The deadline to register teams and receive free bridge kits for the competition is November 13.

WWII propaganda posters provide the frame for viewers to learn about the intense, emotional climate surrounding WWII, and how one prolific image of Jesus deeply affected the audience of that era.

Learn about art, history and the impact of one man's painting at the 75th anniversary of Warner Sallman's Head of Christ. A free event hosted by Anderson University galleries on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 1-4 p.m., the celebration event will include a gallery viewing and a panel discussion regarding the climate in 1940-50s America, and specifically that of the role of the Head of Christ, which was carried on cards by many American WWII soldiers.

Miss the celebration? This special exhibition is free and open to the public starting Oct. 24th  and weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays from 1-4 p.m. and by appointment until Dec 15. For information on additional hours or to arrange group visits call 765-641-4320 or email Tai Lipan at talipan@anderson.edu

4) Bethel College presents: "A Christmas Carol"

READING TUTOR

My name is Iveth Ortiz and I am a Christian certified special educator with a background in reading intervention. Teaching reading to struggling readers has been something that I have truly enjoyed over the past couple of years. I have recently left my teaching position in the public school system to launch a reading intervention tutoring business in Berrien County for private schools and homeschoolers. I currently serve the private schools in Berrien Springs but I am also serving homeschool families. I would like to share my services with homeschooling families in Niles. I give a FREE consultation and initial assessment to the child to determine the reading level. Then, if the parents decide to join, I will provide tutoring in reading to the child from my home office in Berrien Springs.

Here is my website: www.inspiredreaders.org

GENERAL INTEREST

G1) Brain Warmer Upper
G2) Essay Contest
G3)  Help the HUB/Save on Your Taxes

G1) Brain Warmer Upper

You are in a cabin and it is pitch black. You have one match on you. Which do you light first, the newspaper, the lamp, the candle or the fire?

Answer to last week's puzzle:
Three.  (Try it if you don't believe it!)

G2) Essay Contest

Start the school year off well by telling someone you appreciate them through HSLDA's 14th annual Essay Contest. This contest is open to all homeschooled students from ages 7-19.  It offers cash prizes and runs through November 1, 2015. Our themes for this year's contest all focus on how we express gratitude.

Students, write an essay in the form of a letter that directly thanks a person who has shaped your life for the better! That person could be a civic servant such as a sheriff, state representative, or firefighter; a co-op teacher, parent or grandparent, or church leader; or anyone else who comes to your mind.

We encourage you to let your essay be more than a contest entry; consider sending your letter to the person who blessed you. You never know how much of an impact your gratitude may have!

Category 1 (ages 7-10) – Using the principles of a descriptive essay, write a letter expressing gratitude to someone who has influenced your life. A strong essay will vividly describe the details of what this person's role is and what they have done for you.

Category 2 (ages 11-14) – Using the principles of a narrative essay, write a letter expressing gratitude to someone who has influenced your life. A strong essay will share a compelling story that documents how this person's actions have impacted you and/or your community.

Category 3 (ages 15-19) – Using the principles of a cause and effect essay, write a letter expressing gratitude to someone who has influenced your life or your community. A strong essay will clearly connect the addressee's actions to the specific positive outcomes that they caused in your life.

To get a sense of what to look for or avoid in your essay, you can view the judges' comments or read the winning essays from previous years' contests! You can find guidelines and entry forms on our website, as well as information about our other annual contests for homeschoolers in art, poetry, and photography.

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." ~ John F. Kennedy
