G5) Online Latin Class

My name is Maria Johnson. I have been studying Latin since I was 10 years old. I was a member of the Junior Classical League in middle school. Throughout my education, I came back to Latin repeatedly. In College, I majored in Humanities and Cultural Studies and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of South Florida in 2014. While I pursued my degree, I took every Latin education opportunity available to me, including supervised reading and translation work in my undergraduate thesis. I am currently in graduate school at Western Michigan University. I have continued to take Latin courses and have passed through Medieval Latin. There, I received an award in Latin Excellence this past Winter semester. Outside of the classroom, I have tutored and taught Latin for several years.

The Latin class I teach should feel as much like a traditional class as possible, with regular class sessions, giving and receiving homework, and tests. The class session will be held on Skype. There I can have all the students join into a group conference, where we will be able to hear and see each other. I will teach lessons using Powerpoint presentations and also a virtual whiteboard. Tests will be administered through ClassMarker.com, where they will be timed and opened using a password I give out. We will communicate via email as well as a closed Facebook group.

See attached flyer for more info.

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1)  American Girl Doll Classes
2)  Memorial Service for Pat Stoler

1)  American Girl Doll Classes

These are classes for students to learn about nine classic American Girl Dolls and choose and receive one American Girl Doll of their own.  Fun projects and learning about the historical time periods will go along with reading the books. The class will spend 3 – 4 weeks on each of the nine historical dolls, starting with native American Kaya from the late 1700s. Late in the second semester, after they've learned about all the dolls, we will meet at the American Girl store in Chicago where each student will choose the doll they want to receive for their very own. They will bring their dolls to class the last few weeks of the year.

There will be one class for 2nd-4th grade students, and another for 5th-8th grade students.  Both classes are available through the Niles Homeschool Partnership and Berrien Springs Parent Partnership.  If someone not in one of those wants to take the class, the fee is $350 per semester.  Just email Andrea andreamom001@gmail.com or call 269-240-6094 for more info or to sign up if you are not in one of the partnerships.
