2 last minute items

Free curriculum

The giveaway today and tomorrow is at Renee's home in Niles.  We made a mistake on the email address in the update article (below).  The first letter should be "r" instead of "k".  The phone number does work.  The materials are mostly textbooks for grades K - 12, especially heavy on 9 - 12.

Bethel College
just donated a large amount of texts and other teaching materials appropriate for elementary through high school students.  The best news is, the items can't be sold, they must be given away!

Come and take a look at what's available on Thursday and Friday this week, Sept. 24 and 25, 1:00-4:00.  Contact Renee Kurtzweil at 269-340-9013 or keneekurtzweil@comcast.net for the location and directions.

Rummage sale with lots of homeschool materials

We didn't put the time on the article (below) about the rummage sale.  It's from 9am - 5pm Friday and 9am - noon on Saturday.  There are just a few textbooks and tons of educational books (because they are from an unschooler) and materials.

Of interest to homeschoolers:  Westminster Presbyterian Church is holding a rummage sale next Friday and Saturday, Sept 25 & 26.  It's located at 1501 W Cleveland Road, South Bend.   Now that the boys are graduated and my daughter is a senior, I am donating 19 years of homeschool materials to the sale.  Come and see what you can use!

Join thousands of people in caring for our Great Lakes shorelines during the Alliance for the Great Lake 's annual beach clean up.  This is the World's largest shoreline cleanup and is part of an international coastal clean up effort.  In 2008, over 6,000 volunteers removed 24,698 pounds of trash from beaches and shorelines in Michigan , Indiana and Illinois .  To register visit www.greatlakes.org/adoptabeach.  Many local beaches are involved and you can even check out having your family lead a clean up at an unclaimed beach. Exhibitors include farmers, artisans, eco-villagers, and sustainability and natural wellness experts. Also look forward to hayrides, demonstrations of farming skills and helpful food tips, and more.

4) Hello,
I wanted to let families know that we are starting a homeschool Brownie Girl Scout troop for girls 6 - 8 years old. I am an experienced leader with the local Singing Sands service unit and I will be co-leading with another homeschool mom, Sharon Gregor. Scouts is a great chance for girls to learn and experience new things with other girls their age. We will have regular meetings plus we can plan other fun troop activities like a living storybook walk and a garden tea party plus service projects, badge work, dances, camping etc. Details on meeting time and place depend on who signs up, but meetings will probably be twice a month for 90 minutes and will start around mid-October. Those who want to know more can email me directly abarber1@nd. edu. Please spread the word!

1) NEW ART CLASSES FOR HOMESCHOOLERS:
Vince Dominello, a professional artist, is offering an Open Studio for kids. Open Studio allows the flexibility for homeschoolers either to select an art project of their choice or to participate in a variety of innovative art projects that Vince will introduce. Vince's goal is to have students explore the fundamentals of drawing and painting in a friendly and supportive environment. All work is self-paced, allowing students to spend as much time on a project as they choose. Students will use oil and soft pastels, watercolor, tempera, acrylics and a wide range of other media.

This flexibility extends to scheduling as well. Parents purchase 8 sessions with the option of choosing when to bring their children to Open Studio. Available times to choose from are 10:00am weekdays, 4:30pm weekdays, and Saturday mornings. Times can be mixed-and-matched; you can use all eight sessions in one week, or you can spread your sessions over eight or more weeks. (Vince simply asks for a 24-hour advance notice of attendance so that he can ensure ample space for everyone.) Sessions for younger children are one-hour in duration, while sessions for older children and teens are 1.5 hours. All supplies are included with the 8-session fee, and discounted rates are offered to people who become members of Studio Art Classes.

Open Studio is held at Studio Art Classes on Grape Road in Mishawaka (near the old Barnes & Noble Bookstore).  For more information:  www.studioartclasses.org/web/pages/kidslist.html
or phone: 574/243-2006

2) Hello folks! My name is Abigail Cosgriff and I'm with the Detroit Historical Society. Every year we send out a Field Trip Planning Guide that explains out prices, our tours (as well as the MEAP requirements met), and even has some special discounts included. The only issue is that we don't have a PDF version that we can email different groups.
This brings me to the point of this announcement: If you are interested in receiving our Field Trip Planning Guide for the Detroit Historical Museum and Dossin Great Lakes Museum (as well as other school programs), please email me back at abigailc@detroithistorical.org with your mailing address or the mailing address of other interested parties by September 10th!

I hope to hear from you!

The band is under the instruction of Matt Merten, a Notre Dame band director.  Experienced players or beginners are welcome to join.  Beginners will get one-on-one time with a teacher.  Classes meet at 7:30 on Thursday mornings at CE Free church in Niles, which is at the corner of Bertrand and Bond St.    Middle schoolers also have the added benefit of the Band Link program offered by Notre Dame band students for individual lessons and extra group time outside of the MCH band--all at no extra charge!  Get more details by calling Tammy or David Moss at 574-271-6089.

1) Enter the "Spooky Birds" Contest!
Dear Birding Friend,
Halloween is just a few weeks away, so we want to see and hear spooky things about birds! This is the latest environmental challenge from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Celebrate Urban Birds citizen-science project in conjunction with the Encyclopedia of Life website. We call this contest "A Murder of Crows and Other Spooky Bird Tales." (Believe it or not, a large group of crows is called a "murder," but there's nothing really scary about it. Crows are very intelligent, family-oriented birds.)
Still, sometimes birds do things that seem pretty spooky and strange. So for this challenge, we want you to take photos, do a painting, write a story or poem, even shoot a video showing crows, pigeons, starlings, an owl, or any kind of bird doing something puzzling or strange to you. Then we can reveal what the behaviors are really all about. There's usually a perfectly natural, non-scary explanation!
We've had two other environmental challenges so far this year and have received thousands of great entries. I'm attaching a PDF flier about the challenge you can print for yourself or pass along to others who might want to participate.
As always, we have some great prizes, including binoculars from Eagle Optics and Alpen, birdfeeders from YourBirdOasis.com, CDs, books, posters, and more. The first 50 entrants will receive a poster by Pedro Fernandez showing various behaviors of crows, jays, and other birds. We'll post selected images and videos on the Celebrate Urban Birds website. The very best will be included in species account on the website for the Encyclopedia of Life!
How do you enter?
Email your entry to urbanbirds@cornell.edu.
1. Write "AMOC_YourFirstNameLastName_state" in the subject line. (Use the two-letter abbreviation for the state in which the photo was taken.)
2. Include your name and mailing address in the body of the email.
3. Tell us why you submitted your entry to the Murder of Crows challenge. What's the story behind it?
4. If you are submitting a visual image, please attach it as a .jpg
5. One image per entry, please.
6. Read terms of agreement.
7. If you agree to the terms, send us your entry before October 31!
Deadline for entries is Halloween: October 31!
Visit the Celebrate Urban Birds website for more information and to read the terms of agreement regarding all entries.

Thanks for taking the challenge!
Sincerely,
Karen Purcell, Project Leader

3) Challenging today's young minds to create tomorrow's world!
Your students will invent the future. They'll discover new, improved technologies and scientific advancements that will create tomorrow's world. As an ExploraVision coach, you inspire them to make these breakthroughs.
Jumpstart your students' imaginations by encouraging them to compete in the ExploraVision Awards competition and integrate the competition into your curriculum.
Sponsored by Toshiba and administered by the National Science Teachers Association, the ExploraVision competition gives students in grades K - 12 the chance to create their own visions of the future. It's a challenging but rewarding contest in which student teams select and research a current technology, and then explore what it could be like 20 years from now. Research topics can blend in with your syllabus, enhancing your students' grasp of your material and helping you meet classroom goals.
Members of the four first-place teams will each receive a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond and an expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC to be recognized for their achievements. Four second-place teams will also receive $5,000 savings bonds. Big thinking and big stakes those are great reasons for your students to start imagining the future.
