G1) Brain Warmer Upper

Detective Sara Dunts was called in for an investigation on a Saturday morning. Mr. John Gooding had mysteriously vanished from his one story home, Sara was told. "I'll phone Mrs. Glen, the caretaker, and get you the address," Detective Chad Sandlers, Sara's partner, said. Sara stood waiting as he made the call. "Okay, everything's set. Mrs. Glen will be expecting you in half an hour at 232 Parker St," Detective Chad said.

Sara hopped out of her car and walked up the long path that led to the house. Right away she was ushered inside by Mrs. Glen. "Detective, I'm so glad you came. The last place I saw Mr. Gooding was in his room. I suspected that would be your first question," Mrs. Glen said somewhat nervously. She walked Sara into the other room. "Up here," Mrs. Glen called from a twisting flight of stairs. The front door banged shut just as Sara started up the steps. "Oh, I must have left the door open.. The wind must have shut it," Mrs. Glen said. Again they started up the stairs.

They walked up the enormous stairway. Halfway up detective Sara noticed a weather vane through the window. She realized that the wind was blowing west and in order for it to have shut the door it would have to have been blowing east. Then Sara realized for the first time that there was a third set of footsteps on the stairs. Then she realized she had walked into a trap. How did Sara know she had walked into a trap?

Answer to the last brain teaser: the left barber--because they cut each other's hair

G3) 2019 Clean Tech Competition

Win up to $10,000!

Dear Home School Educator,

A new year allows us a new beginning, a new fresh breath, a chance to reset and start anew.. This is also the spirit behind this year's Spellman High Voltage Electronics Clean Tech Competition theme, that the future is brighter than today. We hear too much said of the negative impacts on our resources and environment from human actions, as we have poisoned the planet in pursuit of growth and development. Before, we did not know, but today we do, which is why we owe it to tomorrow to do what we can. Students from all over the globe have begun registering for the 2019 Clean Tech Competition in support of this new beginning, and we hope to see students from Michigan join them!

The Clean Tech Competition is an international research and design challenge for 15-18 year old pre-university students. It is a way for students to test their ideas against both a global issue, as well as competitors with very different experiences than their own. We have found students tend to choose to solve problems that affect their local region the most, and we encourage this! There are so many unique situations, and we want as many addressed as possible.

Competition Information

Each year, the Spellman High Voltage Electronics Clean Tech Competition encourages scientific understanding of real-world issues and the integration of environmentally responsible energy sources.

The 2019 Challenge: "Toward A Greener Tomorrow" asks students to develop a clean technology solution to make our future more sustainable than our past
Teams chose between two categories: Mitigating the Effects of Climate Change and Resource Preservation
Teams consist of 1-3 students, are assisted by a Team Leader (i.e. parent, teacher, or mentor), to develop a written proposal.
No limit to the number of teams per school!
    There is no entry fee.
    Online registration is open https://www.cstl.org/cleantech/registration/
First Round Paper Submissions are due April 12th, 2019.
10 Finalist Teams will be selected, given a $200 (USD) stipend and matched with a Mentor to help them prepare a prototype and presentation for the Finalist Event.
Finalists compete for the $10,000 (USD) first place prize in each category and a 'Continued Mentorship'
Final event to happen on July 18th, 2019!

If you have any questions regarding the competition details, or how to incorporate the competition into your curriculum, please contact us. We look forward to having participants representing Homeschool HUB in the Clean Tech Competition this year, and in years to come!

2019 marks 100 years since Michigan started creating state parks.  Here's a website with activities and info.  There will be events at some parks to celebrate, also:

Click on "Centennial Events" to see what is happening. There are winter events from ice fishing to snowshoe hikes and many events int he spring and summer. It might be a good year to check out a Michigan State Park.  Warren Dunes offers great free educational programs in the summer where kids can go on butterfly hikes, learn about sand dune formation and fossils, go birdwatching, stargaze, etc.  Most likely all the parks have similar offerings.
