2) First Annual Michiana Homeschool Class Reunion--Sunday!

Hey Homeschoolers!  We want to start a yearly class reunion, so we can see all of our old friends again.  The first one will be on Sunday, August 25th from 3 - 8pm at Fuller's on Clear Lake in Buchanan.  The HUB will supply charcoal, lighter fluid, punch and water, and paper products.  Bring meat to grill or a main dish for your family and bring a side dish to share.  Normal admission to Fullers is $1.75 for age 12 and under and $3 for 13 - adult.  They have discounted the adult price to $2 for us....just tell them you are there for the homeschool reunion.

Here's how we picked the date....Jeff Joyce is now a naval officer and will be home on leave.  Jeff and Tara will be there (not Scott, dang it).....and we want a time when they can catch up with all the friends from the Flames, the Wildcats, robotics, chess, and all the other activities where we used to see everyone.  The weather is supposed to be great!

The HUB plans to make it a yearly tradition.  Come join the fun!  Fullers has a beach area, beach volleyball, canoes and kayaks to rent, and a concession with great ice cream cones.

Of course, any current homeschoolers are welcome too.  Y'all come!

5)  Mission Trip to Costa Rica

Greetings,

My name is Debby and I am the Team Administrator for Mission Opportunities Short Term Ministries and we send groups on short-term mission trips and I have a team that I think would be perfect for the home-schooled high school community. We work with a pastor in Costa Rica who would love to have a team of young people hold a sport camp and do evangelism with the youth in the two communities he works in. He also would the group to work with the youth so they can in turn share their faith with their family and friends. We are looking at home school groups due to the time of year the project has been requested for, January 2014, that is when the children in Costa Rica are out of school. I have attached a full team description to this email.

MOST has opportunities for teams from a single congregation or organization which consist of  members from one church.  If you have a smaller group from your church/organization, I can match you with another small group to make a full team.  We also have teams that need individuals on them so can place those folks, too, in just the right opportunity for them.

MOST provides pre-field training and information to prepare team members culturally, spiritually and logistically.  The team members receive training through a series of topical emails with video, website and documents. Each team will  meet with their assigned leader at least once. This meeting can be a live meeting if the team is from one location or conducted through a webinar for the teams who come from multiple destinations. We also provide a medical kit, nursing protocols which were written for us by a tropical disease specialist physician, and a 24/7 on call doctor service for all our teams.

We take care of all the field logistics, set up and provide supplemental health insurance for all team members.  The trip costs includes all the above mentioned pre-field materials plus the team's international air and ground transportation, housing, food, visas if required, and interpreter.  Basically everything is included in our trip cost except the cost to obtain a passport, baggage fees, meals at the airports and spending money.   We also provide a MOST Ministries Team Leader for pre-field training, on the field leadership and post field debriefing and reentry.  Our team leaders are CPR and First Aid certified and have been trained in our Crisis Management plan.  They have completed our training program and are qualified, experienced leaders exemplifying servant leadership.  We take care of everything so that team members can focus their energy on learning about missions and the field in which they'll serve, preparing for their specific mission project and sharing the Gospel.

I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

Blessings,
Debby Suchyta

6)  Free Writing Seminar

Taylor University is once again hosting a free seminar entitled "Discover the Writer Within You" in September. It will be led by published author and Director of Taylor's Professional Writing Department, Dr. Dennis E. Hensley. An identical seminar was given in May, but as it quickly reached capacity – we are hosting another session!

We welcome student and adult aspiring writers to attend, and hope that you might pass along this information to anyone who you think could benefit. Dr. Hensley will discuss the craft of professional writing as a career, writing techniques, navigating the publishing process, and manuscript marketing.

The seminar will be held in meeting room A at the Main Library in Ft. Wayne on Saturday, September 14th from 1:30pm to 4pm. The event is free, but as space is limited, we ask that participates preregister through our website at http://online.taylor.edu/writing.

Thank you for your time. Please feel free to copy and paste or forward the information in this email and my contact information to anyone who'd be interested in the seminar. I also attached a small graphic about the seminar for your use.

Sincerely,

7)  Host Families Needed

Dear Homeschoolera,

My name is Jennifer, and I am writing you today on behalf of YFU, a non-profit intercultural exchange program.  I believe this may be a wonderful opportunity for the homeschooling community to expand their families. As you already know, homeschool families have committed their lives to putting their children first.  They are open to new ways of learning, and they are fully committed to following an original educational journey.  Receiving a YFU International student can be educationally exciting for homeschooling families to learn person-to-person about other cultures, history, families and holidays.

Our International Students generally demonstrate – just by being who they are – terrific study habits which children may pick up on by example. YFU students must attend the local high school.  However, watching an International Student attend school is an introduction for homeschool teens who want to know more about school life. Host family members also become naturally included in key high school moments such as homecoming, sporting events, and prom.

We are seeking host families for international high school exchange students.  At YFU, our host families come in all shapes and sizes.  Right now, we have a number of students that have not yet been placed with an American host family.  Our deadline is August 31 to provide a host family and school enrollment for each international student.  With your support, we hope to further our mission of advancing intercultural understanding, mutual respect and social responsibility through educational exchanges for youth, families and communities.

We have a flyer available for you upon request,  We are hoping to find more families open to new and enriching experiences and willing to provide guidance, love and support to a young person embarking on a journey of self.

Thank you so much for your consideration.  Please contact me if you think you can help.

Very best regards,
Jennifer McKendree

If it rains, we do it the next day, Monday, from 5 - 9pm.  If it rains again, we come the first clear night after the 25th.

The HUB plans to make it a yearly tradition.  Come join the fun!  Fullers has a beach area, beach volleyball, canoes and kayaks to rent, and a concession with great ice cream cones.

Of course, any current homeschoolers are welcome too.  Y'all come!

G2)  Foreign Language Immersion Exchange for Homeschoolers—Application deadline: Sept. 1st

Hi,

I am a homeschooling mom living in Northern California. My three daughters have each lived in France for six months.  All three can speak French fluently. My 13 year old can speak German as well as French. I know it is difficult to believe that a child can become conversationally fluent in six months, but with total language immersion it is possible.

En Famille, a non-profit French exchange organization, has been arranging exchanges for 35 years. The exchange children spend one year together, six months in each home. American children aged 9 to 17 years old live for six months in France, Germany or Spain and also welcome for six months. They are matched with an exchange sister/brother who is within one year of their age, same sex.

You can read about us here: www.enfamilleusa.com

We are beginning our application process for the next cycle of matches. Our next interviews are the first weekend in October with exchanges beginning February 2014. Application deadline: Sept. 1st

If you are interested, please contact me. karenroddy@enfamille.com  Many homeschooled children have already experienced an En Famille exchange. I can put you in contact with a few so you can hear how the experience has changed their life … and how much they love being bilingual!  (this opportunity is available for homeschooled children 9 to 17 years old)

Best wishes,

1) 3rd Annual Homeschool Info Night--please share!

This is a great opportunity to ask questions, meet people, and make connections.

If you teach a class, offer a service, or run a club or group that would be of interest to homeschoolers, you are invited to attend!  Scouts, theater, dance, gymnastics, art, music, tutoring, character building, photographers, piano tuners, whatever else you can think of...come hobnob with local homeschool families.  No charge to you.  Get the word out about what you have to offer.  The event will be at Lake Michigan College Bertrand Crossing campus in Niles, MI  August 29th from 6-8 pm.  Contact Andrea if you want a table:  andreamom001@gmail.com or 269-240-6094.

Homeschoolers, feel free to pass this on to people who have helped you or people you know of who serve homeschoolers!  Then put it on your calendar to come and find out what's out there for you!  Groups, clubs, theater, dance, music, art, Robotics...whatever your students' interests, there will be something there to connect with.  Free refreshments will be served.

3) Host Families Needed

I am a World Heritage coordinator for Wisconsin and Michigan. I would like to offer members of your homeschooling group the opportunity to host a high school international exchange student.

World Heritage is a not-for-profit, State Department approved high school exchange program. We are looking for volunteer families to welcome into their home a foreign teen for the 2013/14 school year. Hosting a student would provide a wonderful opportunity for home schooled children of all ages to expand their knowledge and understanding of another culture. Host families share our American culture with their student and help them become proficient in English. In exchange, the student will share the culture, language, history and geography of their country with their host family.

We currently have students from Europe, Asia, and the former Soviet states who are waiting for a host family.

Host families select the student they would like to host, and provide basic room and board for the student. The student comes with insurance and spending money. They attend the local public high school and the student and host family are supported by a trained World Heritage local representative.

Hosting a student will provide a cultural exchange opportunity and allows an American family to help promote World Peace, one person at a time. Please consider this opportunity to enhance your child's education. We also offer American teens the opportunity to study abroad.

If anyone would like more information, they can contact me by email or phone.

World Heritage is also looking for persons to work with our program as local representatives. I would be happy to provide more information on this opportunity also. Thank you for sharing this opportunity.

4) Fun Bus Tours in August

Historic Churches of Flint
August 19

I had a cycling accident and wound up wounded at a monastery, which is how this tour evolved. It's the first time I'm offering this excursion.  The monks cleaned up the scrapes and told me about their farm. In fact, our lunch will consist of EVERYTHING they make on the premises. Plus, their food is available for sale.  We're going to a Catholic, Presbyterian and other Houses of Worship, too. In addition, we will see some of the more historic treasures of Vehicle City . On the return we will stop at a Jesuit Retreat Center where we will have an insider's glimpse. $70/person

Quilts, Quakers & Questors
August 23

For Civil War & Underground Railroad buffs, this tour features Michigan 's role in the Underground Railroad. Of course, our glowing heroine, Sojourner Truth, is predominantly featured as well as Erastus Hussey and other "agents" & "conductors."  Because of the courage of her convictions, Sojourner Truth went back & forth to the South to fetch those wanting to escape slavery.  We will see her final resting place as well as those of other "agents" on the line. We will also hear how Maryland residents came to Michigan to steal children. And we'll see an actual house that hid fugitives. Sojourner Truth items will be for sale. $80/person

Chocolate, Cheese & Churches
August 29

Folks, this is primarily an eating tour which takes us to a variety of historic churches of all denominations from Jackson to Kalamazoo filled with fantastic food fare.  We'll get a tour of St. Catherine's of Siena in Portage, a docent-led tour of Temple Beth Israel & Cemetery, one or two churches in Bronson Park Historic in Kalamazoo .  We'll stop for personal tours at Chocolate and Cheese Shops. Lunch is included. $70/person

Shawshank Redemption Reunion Tour
August 30

Stars of the film "The Shawshank Redemption" will be in Ohio to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the movie's making.  We will spend the day enjoying the various Shawshank Reunion Weekend events offered in Mansfield , Ashland and Upper Sandusky . Events will include tours of the Ohio State Reformatory, wagon tours at Malabar Farm State Park to Pugh Cabin and past the Shawshank oak tree, which appear in the opening scene of the film. There will also be self-guided tours of multiple locations that appear in the film, including the Bissman Building (Brewer Hotel and Portland Daily Bugle), Huntington National Bank (Maine National Bank scene), Revivals 2 Thrift Store (Trailways Bus Station), Wyandot County Courthouse (Andy Dufresne's Trial) and the Shawshank Woodshop (prison woodshop, reenactment and tours). $85/person

Dear art students, parents, and group contacts,

On a sad note, our family is in the process of moving to Plymouth Indiana as my husband Collin is taking on a new pastoral position at Crossroads Evangelical Free Church. I wanted to pass along some information to our Homeschool friends.
We are holding our INaugural Michigan Space Day August 24th 2013 in Coldwater, Michigan. This event is our first as we begin to open our Michigan facility known as MISpaceport.

We wanted you to know about this event, and a little about us so that you can take advantage of our curriculum and programming. Please visit www.spaceportindiana.com to learn about Space Day and Spaceport Indiana. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.
