G1) Brain Warmer Upper

In marble walls as white as milk,
Lined with skin as soft as silk,
In a fountain crystal clear,
A golden treasure does appear.
There are no doors to this stronghold,
Yet thieves break in and steal the gold.

What is it?

Answer to the last brain teaser: Detective Sara Dunts realized she had walked into a trap when she heard the extra set of footsteps. Hearing the footsteps on the stairs made her remember what her partner had said: "Mr. John Gooding had mysteriously vanished from his one story home." She then realized that this was not Mr. Gooding's home because at that very moment she realized that she was climbing stairs in a supposedly one story house. Sara immediately called for backup and arrested Mrs. Glen. She then walked down the stairs to find Mr. Gooding near the bottom. The two had planned on kidnapping and killing Sara for putting Mr. Gooding's niece and Mrs. Glen's son in jail for murder. Both went to jail to serve their time.

G2) Survey for Homeschoolers

Thank you for all you do for the Michigan homeschool community.  I am a homeschooling parent and doctoral student, and would like to invite you to participate in my dissertation survey:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/homeschool-dissertation

I homeschooled my own son from 1st grade to college, and after that I entered grad school and am now close to earning my doctoral degree in counselor education.  One of my goals is to educate counselors as to what kinds of counseling services would be preferred by homeschoolers.  I know what kinds of supports I would have wanted, but want to hear from others. I love the homeschooling community and love the counseling community and hope to see collaboration between the two.. Whether it be providing information on college planning, supporting parents in integrating social emotional learning in the curriculum, or any other aspect that might be helpful and desired by families.  I also advocate within the counseling profession to educate counselors on the benefits and solid research that shows homeschooling is a good option, and educate them on the discrimination that homeschoolers sometimes face and to make sure counselors are checking their own biases and being open minded if they have clients who homeschool.  It's a process!

The instrument used in this survey is not ideal, but it is the best fit validated scale I could find. It reviews the typical components of school counseling and asks the participant whether it is something that they would prefer to have and whether they actually have it now.  The survey is anonymous, no emails, ip addresses, or other identifying information is attached to the data.

I am in the home stretch of my doctoral degree... just need 200 completed surveys to finish the dissertation and I am counting them down one-by-one as they arrive in survey monkey.  If you are able to share any of this information and share the survey with any other homeschoolers, I am truly appreciative. More information is available at the survey site.  Feel free to contact me with any questions you have.

Warmly,

Leslie Contos, LCPC

G10) 2019 Summer Linguistic Institute for Youth Scholars

 Dear Home Educators,

I am a student at The Ohio State University writing to inform you of an enrichment opportunity available to your high school aged students through the OSU Department of Linguistics. We invite high school students to participate in the 2019 Summer Linguistic Institute for Youth Scholars(SLIYS) program, a weeklong summer event taking place at the university's Columbus campus. The SLIYS program is designed to allow high school students interested in linguistics and foreign languages to explore and think critically about how language works. In addition, SLIYS is an opportunity for college-bound homeschoolers to get exposure to college life and career opportunities.

We will be offering three one-week programs this summer. The first two sessions are for SLIYS I (June 23-28 orJuly 7-12), and the third session is for advanced SLIYS II (July 14-19), which offers a continuation of the materials studied in SLIYS I. Students may stay in OSU dorms throughout the week ($750.00) or choose a non-residential "day-camp" option ($450.00). If a student chooses to participate in both SLIYS I and SLIYS II, the cost is $900 for the commuter option and $1500 for the residential option.. We also can provide accommodations for the weekend between SLIYS I and SLIYS II upon request.

Scholarships are available based on need. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2019. All applications and teacher recommendations can now be completed online.  Please pass this information along to students who you believe would enjoy and thrive on learning foreign languages. We have included a flyer, from which you are more than welcome to produce multiple copies. And, do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. For more information, please visit our website: http://linguistics.osu.edu/SLIYS.

Sincerely,
Rebekah Stanhope

2) Exchange Students

My name is Stacey Bruestle. I'm a local coordinator for exchange students.  The exchange students need to attend the public schools but I'm thinking this could be of interest to homeschool families too. We have many students looking for homes for the 2019-2020 school year.  They come from various countries.  This is a link to the Greenheart Exchange website: https://greenheartexchange.org/

I especially like that you can see some information about some of the students wanting host families for next school year, here: https://greenheartexchange.org/host/host-an-exchange-student/#/tab/meet-our-students After clicking on "here," be sure to scroll down to see the students.

If anyone is interested in hosting and wants to learn more I'd be happy to speak with them.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

3) 9th Annual Thornapple Woodpecker Festival

Apr 27, 2019 in Middleville, MI

The Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail follows the Thornapple River and has been called the most beautiful rail trail in Michigan. The paved Middleville section has an established breeding population of the Red-headed Woodpecker, as well as the other five Eastern U.S. woodpeckers. The Thornapple Woodpecker Festival will feature guided birding walks and stationary guides with spotting scopes along the river. Over 50 species are consistently seen on festival day. Canoeing and kayaking are options on your own; a launch for small boats is near the Village Hall parking lot. Additional birding sites with guides will be within short driving distances. Contact: Becky Kuhn, Grand Rapids Audubon Club, 616- 437-9205, field.trips@graud.org; or Doug Klein, Barry County Bird Club, 201-334-2752.

4) Indiana Dunes Birding Festival

5) Michiana Co-ops to Consider

Michiana Christian co-op in South Niles meets for six classes 9am-3:30pm every Wednesday. Open house April 24th! Come check out the facility, meet families and get info on classes for 2019-20 school year. No requirement to do all six classes, come only for the classes you want but a parent must remain on site and help supervise/teach. Very affordable. Plenty of academic and elective fun classes for preschool-high school, plus a nursery.
http://www.michianachristiancoop.com

South Bend Co-op meets near the airport at The Beacon on Linconlnway. We meet Tuesday mornings and do a variety of 6-week courses through the school year. Everyone is welcome, and though we are coordinated by homeschool moms of Riverside Church, we focus on hands-on learning while letting the parents handle the theological side of education. One thing that makes us different is that parents can sign up by session rather than for the whole year, and they can even pay weekly if they situationally can't make it every week. We have a new session in April-May that is open for registration and should have next year's schedule out soon! http://southbendcoop.org

FLAME Homeschool co-op meets the 1st, 3rd and 5th Friday of the month in Elkhart. We are a Christian co-op. We have two semesters a year. We have a wide group of ages and fun activities for our teens.  From 10-12 pm. We meet at Elkhart Church of God on CR 4.

Growing Fruit Community Homeschool Group meets 2nd and 4th Thursdays from 1-3:30pm in Union, MI, just north of Bristol off of CR17 at New Song Community Church. We currently have classes for 4 year olds up to 2nd grade in Arts and Crafts, Hands on Science, Sign Language, and Interactive Play/Gym times, as well as a nursery with a planned activity for 3 year olds and under. https://m.facebook.com/groups/191822957971792

ARC in Bristol. Christian, though there is no requirement to agree to a statement of faith to join. They do mostly enrichment classes.  Some of the website content is restricted to members, but the website is here: https://www.abundant-rain.org

Mint City co-op in Bremen meets 2 Tuesdays a month (every other) from 9:15 - 12:15. Sign up is at the beginning of the year for both semesters. Cost is $65 for the entire family, the entire year. We hold an assembly with announcements, pledge of allegiance and show and tell, followed by 2 classes, a bring your own snack/lunch time and then a 3rd class. We have class/individual photos and yearbooks, end of year programs with Senior grad recognition, nursery, preschool and multiple classes offered for k - 12th grade.  We are having an open house on Tuesday Aug 7th.
