7) Good News Update

Carrie Steere's husband, Simeon, was in a logging accident recently.  Many of you have been praying for him.  Here is an update from Joan:

Date: Wednesday, February 23, 2011, 11:45 PM

Hi All,

Simeon returned to the hospital for x-rays to check on his progress
today.  The doctors were very pleased- his pelvis is healing well as is
the bladder. The plan now is to remove the catheter on March 5.     Then
on March 30 ( 2 wks. ahead of schedule!) to remove the external brace and
pins.  Yes!  They think that he will be able  to do a little more weight
bearing then, shortly after he might be able to begin to use a walker
with restrictions!  He is still on pain meds and is starting to take a
muscle relaxer to help reduce the leg muscle pain.  Carrie says his legs
hurt so much, especially at night.  The Dr. says the muscles begin to
shrink from not being used which causes the pain.  So hopefully that will
help.

He is getting around well in the wheelchair but, of course, a walker
would be a big improvement in a small house.  She says Lenah enjoys
sitting with her Daddy on his hospital bed or in his chair - still just
glad to have him home.

8) April Day camps north of Battle Creek

This look interesting for those of you in the Battle Creek or Lansing areas -- especially the underwater robotics!

The Battle Creek Outdoor Education Center -Clear Lake Camp wants to share with you an exciting new opportunity for students aged 10-14 to participate in over spring break.  The theme is water so we are calling it Camp H20!  There will be water sampling activities, water quality testing, pond dipping, canoeing and we are teaming up with Mark Gleason from the Great Lakes Naval Maritime Museum to do underwater robotics!

We will be hosting 3 day camp opportunities.  Two one day sessions that take place April 4 and 5.  The same activiites run each day.  We will do mini sessions of the above mentioned activities.  The three day camp which takes place on April 6,7,8 is more intense and we will be able to get more in depth on each activity.  Again, these are all day camp experiences and parents will be responsible for transportation, registration and payment to us. Lunch is included in the cost.

Registrations materials are available on our website: clearlakecamp.org

9) Six Flags Tickets for Elementary Students who read six hours

We are late getting this info out to you because our coordinator moved, and the Read to Succeed program didn't send us materials as they have in previous years, which would have served as a reminder.  They did not send us the info on this program because, in their words on the web site, "We are streamlining the process this year and all program materials will be available online, so you will not receive a registration packet or any other Read to Succeed materials in the mail."   It's a bit late to start, so you will have to hustle, but you can still participate.  All six hours of reading must be logged in by March 4.  Instead of The HUB coordinating it and mailing in all of the reading logs each homeschool teacher can sign up his/her own student(s), log the hours online, and receive a ticket for each student and one for the teacher.  Go to these links:

To sign up:

Student reading log:
http://readtosucceed.discoveryeducation.com/pdf/reading_log_en.pdf

Teacher guide (homeschool info on page 2):
http://readtosucceed.discoveryeducation.com/pdf/reading_club_guide.pdf

To log in your 6 hours, which must be done by March 4th, go to the home page and log in using the username and password you set up when you registered.

Bad Accident

Dear homeschool friends,

Many of you know local Niles homeschoolers Phil and Joan Steere and their family.  Their oldest daughter, Carrie, is married to Simeon.  They are expecting their third child in August.  Simeon was in a logging accident on Monday.  Basically a stack of logs got loose in the logging yard and he narrowly missed having his head smashed in.  Instead his body was pinned between the logs.  He was airlifted to the ICU in Charleston, WV, with a broken pelvis, lumbar fractures, holes in his bladder and urethra, and a bruised kidney.  Because of the broken pelvis he cannot move his legs, but he can wiggle his toes and feet. He had a 6 hour surgery on Wednesday to repair the holes and they've put pins through the pelvic bones and attached them to an external pelvic brace, which is like a cage around the hips.  For 6 months he will be either flat on his back or in a wheelchair (for which they will have to teach him a method to pivot into it).

Joan sent several notes.  Here is a portion of the last one describing the accident and telling where to send funds if you would like to help them out financially:
"All of a sudden one of the logs that was pinning him was hit by another log at the opposite end forcing the end he was at off of him. I'm sure there were logs being moved all over since the stack came loose.  He saw a gap between some logs but having been crushed he couldn't move now. He doesn't know how he got into the gap so quickly but just as he did 3 more logs rolled over the gap. It happened so fast, all he can say is God must've pushed him in.
Two coworkers came and pulled him out (ouch!), put him in their truck and drove him to the local hospital.  On the way there his mouth was so dry ( adrenaline can give you cotton mouth) he could hardly stand it but sensed God directing him not to take a drink (good move).   They got him into the ER (I don't know if they carried him or how they did that).  Several hrs. later a nurse put a catheter in, unaware that his urethra had a hole in it.  After 5-6 hrs. in critical condition they finally realized the extent of his injuries and airlifted him to Charleston where the staff  were amazed that the catheter did not go through the hole and into the abdomen which would obviously would have  been, I don't know, extremely  bad.
Simeon's boss says that unfortunately this kind of accident is not uncommon, but the men usually die from it.
"the God in Whose hand is your breath of life, and all your destiny..."  (Dan. 5:23)
"Save me according to Thy loving kindness and let them know that this is Thy hand; Thou, Lord , has done it."   Amen!!  (Psalms 109:26)

Some of you have asked how you can practically help.  Carrie is hoping to talk to a social worker today to find out how she can get the ball rolling for workman's comp.  As you may know those kind of  balls don't roll very fast but the bills will arrive and regular expenses will happen anyway.  Next to prayer, finances would be the next obvious need.  One of Carrie's cousins has set up a PayPal account for anyone who would like to express their concern and help in a practical way on line or via Facebookhttp://bit.ly/g3BZOH
Or if you would prefer, checks can be made out to Carrie Borsman and sent to 7744 Gatewood Rd., Fayetteville, WV   25840

Words can't express how much we appreciate all of you.

Deeply grateful,
Joan and Phil "

1) Generosity of the Homeschool community appreciated

On Friday, January 14th, The Berrien Springs United Methodist Church held a medical benefit for Stuart. We would like to thank the members of The Homeschool HUB and the homeschooling community in general for their support and donations. It was great to see some of you there. We were deeply touched by the outpouring of concern and support from the community. The church raised over $5,500 during this event and we have already paid off several medical bills. We are grateful and would like to thank everyone for their generosity.

2) Lego Robotics Team Needs Your Votes

Hi everyone!
Preston's Lego Robotics team applied for a patent on a device they created to help mobility in Parkinson's patients.  There is now a competition between Lego teams (that applied for a patent) to win $20,000 to develop that product.  But to win, they must have the most votes.  Would you please help Preston's team by voting for their project, the LaserBlazer, and by voting daily!  Below is the note sent from their coach.

Thanks!
Susan Huffman

The Bremen Botz! Lego robotics team developed a device this year that can help Parkinson's and other patients that experience mobility issues.  We are currently involved in an online competition that could net the team $20,000 to further patent and develop our product.

All that is needed from you is to visit the following website and press the vote button.  You may only vote once per day, but you can vote everyday through the first week of March!  (multiple machines connected to a single router will only get one vote).  Vote from your desktop, cell phone, or even from open wireless connections at your favorite coffee shop.

For us to win, we need your help.  Consider changing the home page in your browser to remind you to vote every time you browse the net.

Thank you for your support and please pass this on to others!

Thank you in advance for your support!!!

DONATE MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

My friend, Hugo, wants to fill a cargo shipping container with musical instruments to take back to Chile with him in February.  He has been here studying to get his Masters in Conducting at Andrews University.  He has also been teaching a conversational Spanish class to local homeschoolers.  He returns to a job conducting orchestra and choir, and teaching, at a university.  He will have programs for younger students as well, and needs instruments for them.  He is also working to raise $20,000 for a full set of bells, to start bell choirs for all ages.  If you have an instrument you would be willing to donate please contact him.  He will even take them if they are not in working condition, to use for repair parts.  He lives near the university in southwest Michigan.  If you are nearby, he will pick up the instrument(s).  If you live a great distance from him, please box up your instrument and send it to him.  He is a wonderful, giving person, and he will put the instruments to great use helping children.

Contact him to arrange your donation of an instrument or money for the bells at:
