2) Homeschool Graduate Recognition

Attention graduating homeschoolers~

INCH (Information Network for Christian Homes) is holding their annual homeschool convention on May 14-16 this year at the Lansing Center.  We would like to invite any interested graduating homeschoolers to join us Friday evening for a special graduate recognition.  Graduates wear cap and gown and are honored, along with their parents, for their accomplishment fighting the good fight and finishing the race.

We would like to have as many grads as possible attend, even those involved in another graduate ceremony.  It is a privilege to the INCH staff and support to be able recognize graduates and their families publicly as well as encourage new and struggling homeschool families.  This is also an opportunity to be a testimony to friends and family to show how strong this homeschool movement is and to support one another.

The Friday evening keynote address is free and open to the public to get as many as we possibly can to support the graduate recognition event.  Please invite any and all you think would be interested.

Those graduates able to join please email by May 1 to inchmichigan@gmail.com with "Graduate" in the subject line. Please tell us graduate's name, parents' names, email address, phone number and the city you are from.

G4)  Funky Nest Contest

Spring is nesting season and some birds have a flair for the funky when it comes to finding the right real estate to lay their eggs and raise their chicks. The annual "Funky Nests in Funky Places" contest hosted by the Celebrate Urban Birds project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is underway. Look for another entertaining collection of nests in old boots, barbecue grills, motorcycle helmets, traffic signals, rakes, old tires and who-knows-what.

Participants may send in a photo, video, story, poem, or even some form of dance or artwork. Entries may be submitted in categories such as "cutest," "funniest," "funkiest," or "most inconvenient." Celebrate Urban Birds is offering a free, downloadable flyer showing some of the places you can look for funky nests in urban locations.

"Even in urban areas, we're a lot closer to birds than you might think," says project leader Karen Purcell. "This contest is a lot of fun but it's also about really being aware of what's around you and taking the time to appreciate birds and all of nature."

The deadline for entries is June 15.

2) Corydon Capitol Homeschool Day

Dear Homeschool Educator:

You are cordially invited to take part in Corydon Capitol's fourth annual Homeschool Day!  Attendees in the past have found this a fun and rewarding experience, catered just to homeschooled families.  We hope you will be able to join us this year, whether it is your first time or a return visit.  Our homeschool event will be on May 6, 2015 and last from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The day will involve multiple stations that the students and their guardians will rotate through on timed intervals.  All stations are based on Indiana history.  Included this year is a tour of the Capitol building, pioneer games and fun, tin smithing…and more! The day is appropriate for children ages 7+, but younger or older are welcome if you think they would get something out of it.  All children must be accompanied by an adult (several students to an adult is fine).  The charge is $5/student (no charge for young children not participating or for adults).  Payment is required in advance and can be made by calling the Site and paying with a credit card, mailing a check, or stopping into our office.  We welcome groups of students…I only need to know the exact number of students you are bringing.

More information will be sent when you register.  In the meantime, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.  I look forward to speaking with you about this fun day!

Thank you,

3) Redbud Rendezvous

Every spring the Redbud Trail Rendezvous is one of the first outdoor events of the season.  This event is brimming with frontier history and often brings surprises for the participants and public. Over a hundred  historic re-enactors set up camps and live outdoors for the event, demonstrating traditional crafts, frontier life ways, and pioneer skills, such as cooking over wood fires and tomahawk throwing. The event is educational and fun, showing authentic history as re-enacted by real people.  Historic camps portray Revolutionary War to Civil War, making this a pre-1865 event. New this year we will have silversmith Jeff Chowning, Veedersburg, Ind., and Cordwaining by Casey Samson, Lebanon, Ind.  People dressed in authentic pre-1865 outfits demonstrate many traditional crafts. Crafts include flint knapping, bow making, beadwork, spinning and weaving, leather, basket weaving , wood carving, blacksmith, blade smith, scrimshaw, fingerweaving, cordwaining and much more.

The event will be held April 26-27 from 10 to 5 on Saturday and from 10 to 4 on Sunday. FCHS grounds are four miles north of Rochester on U.S. 31. The festival will be held just south of the Round Barn Museum in the Living History Village. Admission is $3 for adults ages 12 and older, child 11 and under free.  Proceeds enable the historical society to operate the museum and preserve history. For more information, contact 574-223-4436 or see http://fultoncountyhistory.org/REDBUDRENDEZVOUS.html

4) Onsite Wastewater (septic) Webinar Offered April 20

Approximately 43% of Michigan residents rely on onsite wastewater (septic) systems to handle waste water from their homes and businesses.  That's over 1.2 million septic systems in use in Michigan today and it's estimated that at least 10% of these are in some level of failure. MSU Extension is hosting a live webinar, "Septic Systems: Insight Into Your Onsite System" on Monday, April 20 from 1:30 to 3:30 P.M.

This program will cover what a septic system is, how it works, best management practices to protect the system and human health, how to identify trouble in the system and steps to take if a problem occurs. The live webinar will include presentations by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Macomb County Health Department Sanitarian Supervisor with 29 years of septic and well experience.  The presentations will be followed by a live question and answer session via the chat box.  To join this FREE webinar, you must pre-register at http://events.anr.msu.edu/septicinsight/ . You will receive a confirmation email upon registration and log in instruction at least 48 hours prior to the webinar.

5) Michiana Covenant Academy Open House

Michiana Covenant Academy will hold their annual Open House on Thursday,
April 23, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 14567 Cleveland Road, Granger.
This event is open to all homeschool families.  Please invite your friends
and anyone you know who is looking into homeschooling for their family.
We will have displays of work done by our students this year, and tutors
will be available to discuss their classes with you.  Our 2015-2016 Class
schedule and Calendar will also be available for you to take home.

6)  Wilderness Survival Weekend Workshop

Friday, May 15, 2015 at 6:00 PM - to - Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 11:00 AM (EDT) at Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children Camp Carthage, IN 46115

Wilderness survival, that is, taking care of ourselves in ways that allow us return home safely, is what we do whenever we are in the outdoors. Most of the time we get along just fine while camping or hiking. But when things go wrong, the skills of wilderness survival can help make everything right again.
