G4) Huge Online Natural History Museum

See the World's Best Natural History Collections on Google's New Arts & Culture Institute

A new online experience from Google, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and more than 1,000 other partner institutions is opening the doors to spectacular collections of natural history, all available in one place. Each collection is presented as an interactive, dynamic, and immersive experience, allowing visitors to discover nature's diversity and fragility in an unprecedented way at no cost.

his new online exhibition is available on g.co/naturalhistory and includes Our Feathered Planet, featuring the Cornell Lab's large-scale mural by artist Jane Kim. The mural's 3,000 square feet depict the diversity and evolution of birds. Each bird represents an existing bird family and is shown in its home range on a world map in life-sized detail.

"To bring this mural to life for online visitors from all over the world, we had to combine more than 750 photographs into a single image," explains Mya Thompson at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. "Our Feathered Planet, gives viewers a guided tour of the mural and offers an insider's look at the artistic process. You'll get close enough to see the brush strokes and learn a lot about the birds at the same time."

The Google Cultural Institute online collection uses state-of-the-art technology to give a new virtual life to extinct animals and tell fascinating stories about our planet's evolution over billions of years. Viewers come face-to-face with Jurassic giants in 360-degree videos, giving a better sense of how these animals lived, and what it might have felt like to be in their presence.

Panoramic Street View imagery gives people a backstage pass to wander virtually around iconic venues such as London's Natural History Museum, the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin or the American Museum of Natural History. Visitors may also browse more than 100 fascinating stories related to dinosaurs and the world's most known fossils, in addition to learning about birds, plants, insects, and minerals on g.co/naturalhistory.

For this exhibition, natural history institutions from 15 countries created over a hundred interactive stories, sharing a total of 300,000 photos, videos, and other documents online in collaboration with Google. The latest innovations in tech help bring the magic of these legendary venues to life, and give everyone a chance to reconnect with our evolution story and our planet environment in all its richness.

The new online exhibition opens today at g.co/naturalhistory and is open for all online, for free on the web and through the new Google Arts & Culture mobile app on iOS and Android. You can watch all the 360-degree videos on YouTube.

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1) Ghost Night at the Mansion
2) Bethel College presents: "Shadowlands"
3) Career, College & Exploration Fair

1) Ghost Night at the Mansion

Funeral biscuits and black-draped mirrors. Fortune-tellers and a witches' band. For one night a year, the Governor Warner Mansion is "haunted."

Ghost Night at the Mansion, to be held Saturday, October 15 from 7-9:30 p.m., offers a Halloween spooktacular that's a twist on the traditional house of horrors. There won't be any fake blood or chainsaws. Instead, it's a chance to encounter the ghostly, macabre scene of a Victorian funeral.

Turn-of-the-century traditions and superstitions about death will be the focus of the event, held at the historic house museum that was once home to Fred Warner, Michigan's governor from 1905-1911. Heavily-veiled tour guides, dressed in black for deepest mourning, will reenact members of the Warner family, returned from the great beyond to share memories of Fred Warner's life…and death.

Hear Fred Warner describe his own funeral as solemn hymns waft from the grand piano. Learn why mirrors were draped in black fabric after a death, and find out the gristly history behind the seemingly innocent custom of handing out souvenir funeral cookies. There's a reason for the old saying that truth is stranger than fiction.

In addition to the tours, admission also includes a host of outdoor Halloween activities. Visit the Warner "graves" and the haunted classic cars, with their cobwebs, glowing lights, and skeleton drivers. See the classic movie "Young Frankenstein," and gather around the firepits for s'mores. Have a psychic reading on the porch (nominal fee), then follow the trail of tiki torches to the gazebo for cider and donuts.

As a special feature, the Michigan Ghost Watchers will give several presentations throughout the evening, complete with photos and audio clips from their investigations at the Warner Mansion. See what paranormal activity they've discovered at the Home of Farmington History!

Ghost Night is recommended for ages 8 and up. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $12/person or in advance for $10/person at Farmington City Hall, located at 23600 Liberty Street, or by calling (248) 474-5500 ext. 2225.

The Governor Warner Mansion is located at 33805 Grand River Avenue, two blocks west of Farmington Road. For more information, visit facebook.com/governor.mansion.

2) Bethel College presents: "Shadowlands"

The Bethel College Theatre Department will perform "Shadowlands," presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. Performances are Thursday, Sept. 29 and Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center – Auditorium. Tickets are on sale now.

This West End and Broadway hit is the love story of C.S. Lewis - Oxford don and author of "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "The Screwtape Letters" - and American poet Joy Davidman. Jack Lewis is smug in his convictions about God and His plan for the world until Joy and her young son enter his life and the bewildered theoretician of love in the abstract finally confronts its direct presence.

Purchase tickets online at BethelCollege.edu/Tickets or call the ticket office at 574.807.7080, Monday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults, students and seniors.

3) Career, College & Exploration Fair

Tuesday, October 11, 2016, 11:00am—12:00pm
at Van Buren Technology Center
250 South Street, Lawrence, MI 49064

Approximately 50 post-secondary opportunity representatives will be in attendance at this event.
We invite you to share in this experience.

Please RSVP to Staci Bodtke, 269.539.5328 or sbodtke@vbisd.org

I have streets but no pavement,

Answer to the last puzzle:

G2) 2016 HSLDA Essay Contest Now Open!

Whose History Will You Bring to Life?

History will always have a mysterious side for us because we were not there to witness most of the events that have taken place. We'll never truly know what it was like to sit among the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving, or to build bomb shelters in the backyard during the Cold War.

This year, we want you to explore that mystery! We can't time-travel, but we can study the past and learn how to rise above the challenges we face today and embrace a greater vision for our future.

There's a lot to choose from for your essay—depending on your age, you can select a person, day, or event from world history, U.S. history, your state history, or even your family history.

To get started, put yourself in someone else's shoes (or boots or moccasins) and let your imagination take you to their world!

Category 1 (ages 7-10) – If you could go back in time, who would you most want to have a conversation with? Why? What would you want to talk about?

Category 2 (ages 11-14) – If you could go back in time, what day would you most like to witness up close, like a fly on the wall, and why?

Category 3 (ages 15-19) – If you could go back in time, what historical event would you like to have been involved in, and why?

And as you ponder the people and events of the past, we invite you to consider how what you're living out today will one day become your personal history.

2) New Oil Painting Exhibit  "Futile Proposals"

Bethel College Assistant Professor of Art and Art Department Chair Michael May will open his first exhibit at the college, "Futile Proposals," in the Weaver Art Gallery. The gallery will feature May's art from Sept. 9 to Oct. 1, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

May's exhibit consists of oil paintings that depict experiments by a fictional, harmless lunatic.

"The work is layered so visitors can experience the work as deeply as they wish," says May. "On the surface, each painting is a joke. Upon deeper inspection, visitors might connect the jokes to more series concepts like racism or other human idiosyncrasies.

After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ball State University in 2003, May held a variety of jobs in a direct care capacity working with "at-risk" youth, adults with mental illnesses and preschoolers with special needs. In 2010, he graduated from Miami University with a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting. He spent five years teaching painting, color theory and 2D and 3D design at Columbus College of Art & Design.

May exhibits his work in solo, group and juried national and international exhibitions and is the recipient of the Ohio Arts Council's Individual Excellence Award for his outstanding accomplishments in painting. He was twice nominated for the Columbus College of Art & Design's Teaching Excellence award.

Weaver Art Gallery exhibits are located inside the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center on the campus of Bethel College and are free and open to the public. For any questions, contact the Art Department at 574.807.7022 or art@bethelcollege.edu.

It will take place in the Wiekamp Athletic Center at Bethel College from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Christian college representatives from a variety of colleges/universities will be available to answer questions and discuss options for those interested in Christian higher education.
