Each camp is open to kids who have completed 5th-8th grades. Register online at BethelCollege.edu/Camps and email Academic.Camps@BethelCollege.edu with questions. The registration deadline is two weeks prior to each camp. If space is available, late registrations will be accepted up to the first day of camp for an additional $10 fee.

Food Fun! with Beth Kroa
July 7-11, 9 a.m. to noon  $125

Food, glorious food! We all need to eat, but how do chemists approach the study of our food? Learn how food chemists analyze the snacks we eat. We'll measure the content of sugar, vitamin C, iron and calories in different food items. Chemical tests will be used to determine whether a food contains carbohydrates, fats or proteins. We'll simulate digestion (Ew!), looking to see how our bodies do their business! Have fun exploring the types of chemicals and nutrients in our food!

Spot the Animals! with Kevin Drury
July 7-11, 9 a.m. to noon  $125

Spot the fascinating animal life at Bethel College! We'll use nets (supplied) to collect insects, visit the college's native prairie, and monitor insect diversity. Next, we'll use binoculars (supplied) to explore bird life in the oaks, wetlands, open lawns and the prairie. Third, we'll discover mammalian wildlife and conduct animal behavior studies. Finally, we'll explore Bethel's ponds for abundant life (dress appropriately!). Bethel College's campus is alive with wildlife! Come and explore with us!

Anatomy Camp with Vicki Debolt
July 7-11, 1 to 4 p.m. $125

Your body contains as many cells as there are stars in the sky — that makes you a universe to explore. We'll peer through microscopes to view cellular organelles and observe how cells come in different shapes to perform different purposes. Then on to how cells join together to form tissues. Dissecting fetal pigs, cow eyes, sheep hearts and cats will teach us about organs and organ systems. Running common laboratory tests on safe, synthetic body fluids will teach us basic physiology, let us diagnose common illnesses, extract DNA and more!

Youth Gospel Choir with Zachary Gillis
July 14-18, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  $250

The Bethel College Youth Gospel Choir Camp is an exciting gospel choral ensemble that reflects the artistic ability of youth. We strive for excellence in leading youth to sing Jesus' message of salvation. This camp emphasizes the development of vocal skills, group singing and choreography through diverse musical styles including gospel, contemporary, hip hop and songs from other cultures. Campers will make a joyful noise while developing skills in fun and meaningful ways that will serve them during their school years and beyond. Campers will enjoy this all-day camp of singing, music and activities. Snacks will be provided, but students should bring a sack lunch.

 Theater Camp with Deb Swerman
July 14-18, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. $250

Do dramatic scenes get you wondering how actors create characters? Do you enjoy trying on different personalities? Do you love acting out scenes among family and friends? Maybe you just want to build confidence and make new friends? Then theater camp is for you! Join us this summer as you learn techniques that theater actors use to perform on stage to the delight of audiences. As you build on your own natural creativity, we will explore different aspects of theater, from improvisation and script work to short scenes and playlets. We will perform for an audience at the end of the week, as we introduce you to the spotlight of the stage! Campers will enjoy an entire day of acting and other activities. Snacks will be provided, but students should bring a sack lunch.

What a Character! with Jennifer Ochstein
July 14-18, 9 a.m. to noon  $125

Create characters that jump off the pages of your short story or novel! This creative writing camp will help students create memorable characters that seem to live and breathe on the page. Use your imagination while learning the techniques of professional writers as you craft characters your readers won't soon forget!

G1) Constitutional Law for Enlightened Citizens

Fall 2014 online course Constitutional Law for Enlightened Citizens: registration for this class, taught by HSLDA Founder and Chairman Michael Farris, is now open.

This course is the perfect resource for any student wishing to understand both the constitutional bounds of government and the way in which the Supreme Court has interpreted those bounds.

Geared toward high school students and designed to provide an entire credit of study in government, Constitutional Law for Enlightened Citizens makes an excellent addition to a homeschool curriculum, but also presents a great opportunity for those whose formal education has ended.

G2) First Recorded Bluebird Twins Found by NestWatch Volunteer

Last year an Eastern Bluebird laid three normal eggs and one large egg in one of NestWatcher Gerald Clark's nest boxes. A few weeks later he had five nestlings in the box, and his finding became a scientific paper on the first recorded instance of twins in bluebirds. (The Lab's Dr. Caren Cooper tackled just how rare an event this is in a blog post for the journal PLOS.) The finding is a direct example of how citizen scientists contribute to scientific discovery each time they participate. Try NestWatch this season!

G7)  Beta Game Invitation

Greetings,

To introduce ourselves in short order and keep your day moving along, we are a group called FRACTAL, and we have just published a paper on what is popularly called "the unified theory of everything".  More accurately, it is a game called FRACTAL, and we have a club of the same name that plays a game designed off of the unified theory of everything.  If you are not up to speed on the idea, the theory solves for relativity theory and quantum theory, and our paper (it's a book) proves God as well.  We are looking for players, and we wanted to get in touch with your group and extend the olive branch as it were.

Please visit http://www.fractalfighting.com and take it from there!

Sincerely,
Calvin Abramson

G8)  EE week is this week

Sunday marked the beginning of 2014's National Environmental Education Week! Thanks for joining the thousands of educators and students around the country focused on connecting the importance of the environment with STEM learning -- Greening STEM. If you haven't already registered for EE Week this year, please do! EE Week 2014 Registration:  http://eeweek.org/register

As part of this year's Greening STEM theme, Engineering a Sustainable World, EE Week will explore the application of engineering to sustainable solutions for a healthier planet and healthier people. Engineering employs math, science and technology to develop sustainable solutions to real-life environmental and other challenges. By incorporating engineering lessons into the other STEM subjects across all grade levels, educators allow students to combine what they've learned in an effort to solve real problems.

Environmental education can provide students with opportunities to engage in meaningful and exciting engineering projects that can spark their interest in STEM and empower them to take part in solutions to local environmental challenges.  EE Week has plenty to offer this year! Stay tuned all week--and beyond--on http://eeweek.org, EE Week's Facebook and Twitter pages, and via our daily updates.

published works. Details and submission guidelines will be revealed at this event, and will also be available in the library
through the submission deadline.

4) Writing Seminar in Fort Wayne

Taylor University is once again hosting a seminar entitled "Discover the Writer Within You" in May. It will be led by published author and Director of Taylor's Professional Writing Department, Dr. Dennis E. Hensley.

We welcome student and adult aspiring writers to attend, and hope that you might pass along this information to anyone at Homeschool HUB you think could benefit. Dr. Hensley will discuss the craft of professional writing as a career, writing techniques, navigating the publishing process, and manuscript marketing.

The seminar will be held in meeting room A at the Main Library in Fort Wayne on Saturday, May 10th from 1:30pm to 4pm. The event is $10, and space is limited, so we ask that participants preregister through our website at http://online.taylor.edu/writing.

Thank you for your time. Please feel free to copy and paste or forward the information in this email and my contact information to anyone who'd be interested in the seminar.

Sincerely,
