G1) Watch a Fluffy Albatross Chick Grow Up on a Nestcam

It may not seem like nesting season to most of us, but it is for Laysan Albatrosses in the Hawaiian islands. Cornell University's  Bird Cams began streaming the action from a nest on Kauai last week, just as a little gray-and-blond chick emerged from its shell. By July this chick—which weighed less than a glass of water at hatching—will grow into a bulky brown-and-white bird with a nearly seven-foot wingspan. To raise their chick, the two parents will range across the Pacific, traveling as far as Alaska or Japan to bring back meals of digested squid. The camera captures incredible details of the birds' plumage—including the soft, almost airbrushed shading of the adults' faces and the frizzy down of the chick.

Watch the cam here:  http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/41/Laysan_Albatross   (If you see a dark screen, bear in mind that dawn in Hawaii is at around noon Eastern time, or 9 a.m. on the West Coast.)

G2)  The Great Backyard Bird Count Starts Feb. 14!

Everyone's favorite midwinter bird count is happening this February 14–17, and for the second year in a row it's open to anyone, anywhere in the world. The Great Backyard Bird Count is a free event now in its 17th year, and by participating you're helping give scientists their biggest, broadest single-moment snapshot of bird populations. Last year nearly 138,000 people participated, counting 33.4 million birds and 4,258 species. A newly redesigned website is full of great features like a gorgeous display for your photo submissions, how-to materials, data exploration tools, and tricky bird ID help. Come count with us.

G3) Math Contest for Students 14 and under

A national U14 math competition will be held in Orlando, Florida on Friday, March 28th, 2014. The winner will receive $10,000. This competition is called National Number Knockout (N2K) because we want to knock out innumeracy by improving calculating speed and accuracy. At the moment, N2K is accepting scouting videos of students playing the game. Videos are due by  February 20, 2014. After we review the videos, we will choose the 32 best and brightest students to compete for the grand prize. All expenses to Orlando will be paid—covered for the 32 finalists and one parent each!

Learn about the contest:  http://nationalnumberknockout.com/

Register for FREE, receive the PDF rulebook, and upload the scouting video of your student:  http://www.classicalconversationsbooks.com/nanukn.html

1) Opportunity for homeschoolers to participate in Elementary Fine Arts Festival

Hello!

My name is Grace Mieczkowski, and I am a homeschool graduate who currently teaches private music lessons. I coordinate the annual Elementary Fine Arts Festival that is hosted by the Michigan Association of Christian Schools (MACS). This festival is held at Bethany Christian School in Troy, Michigan, and is open to students in 4th-6th grades, both in MACS schools and other schools, churches, homeschool groups, and families.

The 2014 MACS Elementary Fine Arts Festival will be held on Friday, February 28th, 2014.

Here is a list of all the categories that we have available:

Speech:   Poetry Recitation, Scripture Recitation, and Oral Reading

Music:  Vocal Solo, Piano Solo, String Solo, Brass Solo, Woodwind Solo (including recorder), Guitar Solo, Percussion Solo (snare drum or mallet instrument), Harp Solo, Piano Ensemble (1 or 2 pianos available), Small Instrumental Ensemble (2-5 students), Large Instrumental Ensemble (6 or more students), Small Vocal Ensemble (2-5 students), and Large Vocal Ensemble (6 or more students)

Art: Drawing, Painting, Photography, Craft - students may use a kit in this category, Sculpture, Printmaking, Calligraphy, and Mixed Media

For music and speech entries, the student will perform his or her prepared piece for a judge and a small audience, and then the judge will give verbal feedback and work with the student on the performance. The judge will also provide a written critique. For art entries, the judges will be available to talk and provide feedback to the students. For all entries, the student will receive a rating and a corresponding rating ribbon. The festival is non-competitive, with the main purpose being to give an opportunity for the students to perform and receive feedback.

As a former homeschool student myself, I can tell you that this is an excellent opportunity for homeschooled elementary students! It provides a goal to work toward, as well as an opportunity to receive feedback from excellent judges. I teach music lessons to my younger siblings, and their participation in this festival is motivating their practicing and preparation!

Our purpose is to give as many elementary students as possible an opportunity to develop fine arts skills that can be used in future ministry, glorifying Christ with their God-given talents.

To register for the Elementary Fine Arts Festival, please email or call me by January 31st. The attached brochure contains more details on the event and its fees (just $2 for student registration and $6 for an individual event).

Please pass this on to any homeschoolers you may know who are involved in fine arts and would benefit from an opportunity like this!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

God bless,

Grace Mieczkowski

2)  The Miracle Worker Performance

The Macomb Center for the Performing Arts presents the 2013-2014 season of Page to Stage, a theater and literacy program that brings to life curriculum-linked stage adaptations of both new and familiar stories. These world-class productions starring professional actors bring characters from history and literature to the stage, giving voice to words and inspiring young people to find their own voices.  We are proud to present The Miracle Worker on Thursday, March 27th at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

The Miracle Worker – ASL Interpreted Performances

"The Miracle Worker" tells the story of Helen Keller, deaf and blind since infancy, who finds her way into the world of knowledge and understanding with the help of Anne Sullivan, her gifted tutor. In some of the most turbulent and emotion-packed scenes ever presented on the stage, Helen overcomes rage and confusion to triumph over her physical disabilities. Recommended for ages 9 and up.

Attached please find information about the performance along with details about making reservations for a group if you are interested in planning an outing.  Tickets are on sale now at the Macomb Center Box Office at 586.286.2222.  To get the best seats, book your reservations as soon as possible.  If you have any questions or would like printed materials to share, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Sarah Bojanowski

3) Wine Evaluation Workshop in Southwest Michigan

Michigan wines are receiving increased national attention due to recognition of their quality, and wines from Southwest Michigan are among the best the state has to offer. Whether you are a professional in the wine industry or a wine aficionado, don't miss this opportunity to taste Southwest Michigan wines.

A panel of knowledgeable experts will guide you through tastings of wines from the Lake Michigan Shore Appellation, along with world class examples of wine styles from other wine regions similar to SW Michigan wines. Participants will taste the wines at the same time as the experts to get a first-hand appreciation of the subtleties of the wines. At the end of the session, the best SW Michigan wine in each category will be chosen by the panel. The event will end with a hospitality session of SW Michigan wines. Representatives of the wineries will be present to answer any questions you may have about their wines.

This event, sponsored by The Michigan Grape Society, will be held on Feb. 4th, 2014 from 8:30 A.M. until 4:30 P.M. at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center (SWMREC), 1791 Hillandale Road, Benton Harbor, Michigan. Registration for this event is $75/person by February 1 and $90/person for paid registrations after that date. Registration includes a catered lunch.

For additional information, contact Diane Dings, 269-944-1477 or email: dingsd@msu.edu at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center (SWMREC). Registration forms can be obtained from SWMREC, 1791 Hillandale Rd., Benton Harbor, Mich. (view map and directions). To register, fill out the registration form and mail a check payable to Michigan Grape Society, P.O. Box 151 Baroda, MI, 49101.

4)  Sociology Class for Homeschoolers

Dear Homeschooling Friends,

I am a longtime homeschooling parent in the Genesee County area as well as a college instructor for over 20 years. Many of you know that I have offered sociology courses in the past to homeschooled high school students (grades 9-12) and have asked when I would be doing one again. You will be happy to hear that I am now in the process of putting plans together for another Introductory Sociology course to be held in the near future.

Sociology is an elective course in the social sciences and, in this format, I recommend one-half high school credit for the student who completes this course. Sociology is a vital course to understanding the relationship between the groups of which we are (or have been) a part, and who we come to be as individuals. This is an especially important concept for teens to grasp as they are beginning to make decisions for themselves about groups and personal relationships (1 Corinthians 15:33).

Unfortunately, much of academia has used sociology as a tool to be used to further the liberal agenda. As a Christian and a sociologist, I am unwilling to "throw the baby out with the bathwater," and I continue to highly value the sociological approach to understanding human behavior in our society and in our world. For this reason, I have put together this one semester, 10-week course for Christian homeschooled high school students. Students taking this course get experience in a classroom setting, and have the opportunity to learn notetaking skills as well. In-class writing assignments are brief and largely opinion-based, which presents homeschooled students with practice in developing their skills in a low-pressure situation. These assignments are graded on a pass/fail basis, meaning that they have either completed the assignment or they have not. (They are not graded based on their writing skills.) The course is discussion-based and information is presented from a biblical perspective. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the discussions and to contribute their comments and opinions. The course also requires two exams which may include multiple choice and short answer questions, and possibly a short essay question.

As I said, the course is planned to be about 10 weeks long, and we will meet once a week for two hours. I am tentatively planning for the course to meet on Monday mornings from about 10-12 or Wednesdays (maybe 10-12 or 1-3), depending on the schedules of the families involved. I will be looking for a location in the Grand Blanc area where the class can meet.

The course syllabus will be available soon for review (upon request). Please contact me with questions or to indicate interest in having your child take this course. I am looking for about 10 committed students in order to run this course. So please pass this information on to others!

I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
Jodi Brown, M.A., C.F.L.E
