1)  Alliance for the Great Lakes Annual Beach Clean Up--Sept 19
This is happening tomorrow!!  If you enjoy using the fantastic beaches on Lake Michigan, how about helping to keep them clean?  Everyone show  up at the New Buffalo beach to work from 10am - 1pm.

Join thousands of people in caring for our Great Lakes shorelines during the Alliance for the Great Lake 's annual beach clean up.  This is the World's largest shoreline cleanup and is part of an international coastal clean up effort.  In 2008, over 6,000 volunteers removed 24,698 pounds of trash from beaches and shorelines in Michigan , Indiana and Illinois .  To register visit www.greatlakes.org/adoptabeach.  Many local beaches are involved and you can even check out having your family lead a clean up at an unclaimed beach. This year the Volunteer Center is adopting the New Buffalo Beach and is inviting everyone to come out and help 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.  Visit this opportunity on-line or call Callie at 983-0912 for more information

2) Southwest Michigan Community Harvest Fest
We just discovered that Tillers International, near Kalamazoo, is having a fun and educational event this Sunday.  Here is the info from their web site at http://www.tillersinternational.org/

Their mission:
To preserve, study, and exchange low-capital technologies that increase the sustainability and productivity of people in rural communities.
Southwest Michigan Community Harvest Fest:
Mark your calendar for Sunday, September 20, 2009 and get ready for another fantastic Harvest Fest.

The fest runs from 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM and is hosted by Tillers International in Scotts, Michigan, a short ride east from Kalamazoo and Portage. Admission is just $10 per carload (or $1 per person for busloads of ten or more) — and admission for bicyclists is free.

Check out fresh locally-grown produce and connect with ecologically sound resources in our community. Exhibitors include farmers, artisans, eco-villagers, and sustainability and natural wellness experts. Also look forward to hayrides, demonstrations of farming skills and helpful food tips, and more.

Chef and popular lecturer Sherri Brooks Vinton, author of The Real Food Revival, will discuss how to reclaim the food chain and move from industrial agriculture to food raised with integrity — and a more delicious, sustainable future.
Greensky Bluegrass tops the musical lineup. Plus we'll have more great presenters, growers & vendors, food, a family tent for youngsters, and fun activities for the whole family!

3) Fantastic Creation Museum Homeschooler's Deal
The Creation Museum is running a fantastic deal for homeschooling families in the months of September and October for Tuesday or Wednesday visits. The rate is $7 for children and $10 for children and adults ages 13 and up with the planetarium included! If you have ever wanted to go to the museum as a home school family, this is a great deal and definitely worth the trip.

Please pass this along to any homeschooling families you know. This is not a group rate!  You need to contact Eddie Lutz (Area Representative) directly to get this great deal. Please call 888-582-4253 ext. 377 or email elutz@creationmuseum.org to make your reservation.

4) Hello,
I wanted to let families know that we are starting a homeschool Brownie Girl Scout troop for girls 6 - 8 years old. I am an experienced leader with the local Singing Sands service unit and I will be co-leading with another homeschool mom, Sharon Gregor. Scouts is a great chance for girls to learn and experience new things with other girls their age. We will have regular meetings plus we can plan other fun troop activities like a living storybook walk and a garden tea party plus service projects, badge work, dances, camping etc. Details on meeting time and place depend on who signs up, but meetings will probably be twice a month for 90 minutes and will start around mid-October. Those who want to know more can email me directly abarber1@nd. edu. Please spread the word!
