4) Dear fellow homeschooling parents,
My name is Melissa and I'm a piano teacher and proud homeschooling mother of 3 children in Warren , Massachusetts .
I'm writing as I have a very special opportunity to offer the homeschool community.  With technology changing the way education and business is done these days it is essential that we keep up with the growing demand for online learning.  This is why we have decided to expand and offer private piano lessons - online.
Private piano lessons online work the same way as traditional private piano lessons.  These are not recorded video lessons; they are given live via webcam with a private instructor.  Lessons can be arranged weekly or biweekly. The benefits of online learning are:
*Comfort of home
*Save money on gas
*Comfort of your own instrument
*Save time and aggravation fighting traffic or inclement weather commuting to lessons
Since this is a new feature being offered and some technical issues may occur we are giving a steep discount on lessons.  Pricing is $9 per 30-minute lesson (normally $18) and will stay at this rate through June 2010.  There will be a free online consultation prior to the first lesson to work out any kinks and be sure we can connect on time without difficultly when lessons are scheduled.  Payment is accepted via Paypal or personal check.  There is absolutely NO obligation or long term commitment.
In order to register for private online lessons, you must have (or be willing to acquire) the following:

*A computer that is able to be near your instrument
*DSL, FIOS, cable or satellite internet connection
*A headset with microphone that plugs into the USB port in your computer
*Web camera
*Piano or piano keyboard with at least 76 keys

Enrolled students will also be given a membership to www.MusicLearningCommunity.com which allows them to utilize 100's of games that reinforce music theory!

If you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible so we can discuss a time that is convenient for lessons.  I'll be happy to answer any questions that you may have as well.

5) Don't Miss any of the December Activities in the Children's Department at the Niles District Library:

•During December the stories for Preschool Storytime will be about winter days, Christmas trees, sharing & giving, the librarian's favorite holiday stories and the New Year. Join this group on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. for great books and stories.
•During December the Squigglers will celebrate all the holidays with songs, coloring pages and games. This group meets on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Our theme song for December will be Jingle Bells.
•Marty Klubeck, our Chess Club instructor, will be on hand Saturday, December 5 and 19 at 9:30 a.m. He teaches the basics of Chess to beginners and challenges the experts. Bring a friend to this growing group.
•When the Jr. Garden Club meets on Saturday, December 12th at 1:00 p.m. the kids will learn how to arrange various evergreens into swags that can be used as gifts. Ribbons, bows and fancy decorations will be added to this project for professional looking door or wall hangings. This is a great opportunity for children to learn a useful craft.
•The Christmas tree in the Children's Department is extra special this year. It is decorated with ornaments from children's books. Guess how many ornaments are on the tree and the child who gets closest to the correct number will win a stack of great books and other goodies. Stop by and see this unusual tree.
•Being bored will not be allowed in the Children's Department during Christmas break.  From December 21st through January 5th, over fifteen board games will be set out to chase boredom out into the snow. During those two weeks, take-home coloring pages and crafts, raffles and other activities will abound. With over 40,000 children's books and many bean bag chairs, the Children's Department is the only place to be.

7) Any skiers need a helmet?
The trauma center in Kalamazoo has a program where they sell ski helmets for only $17.  The Berrien Springs Parent Partnership has a PE class in which they are doing a unit in sking/snowboarding.  On Dec 9th at 8:30am the trauma center people will be at Berrien Springs school to do a safety presentation and helmet fitting.  All homeschoolers can take advantage of this time and order a helmet.  If you are not part of the Parent Partnership you will need to pay the $17 yourself.  The helmets will be picked up a few days later and brought to Berrien Springs, where you can then pick yours up.  There are several sizes and six different colors of helmets.  Please let Sharon Haynes know if you are coming, so they can move to a larger room if necessary.  Her number is 269 429-4004.

8) Cultural Diversity Day
Berrien Springs High School has their Cultural Diversity Day this coming Wednesday.  Due to the fact that they have Andrews University in their town, they have students from 27 different nations attending their schools.  This day is a celebration of that diversity.  It's like a big talent show, where the students showcase their native culture.  It could be a native dance, music, costumes, etc.  All homeschoolers are invited to attend.  It starts at 8:30am, so you should arrive at the high school by 8:10 in order to get seated before all the high school students pour in.
