G3) Academic Envelope Art Contest

This is a fun, monthly contest open to all homeschooled students - you do not have to be a Landry Academy student to participate. There are three age groups for participation:

- 2 years-old through 8 years-old
- 9 years-old through 12 years-old
- 13 years-old through 18 years-old

We'll choose two students from each age category each month to receive a $25 ChristianBook.com gift card and have their art (back of the envelope) appear here. Art will be judged on creativity, detail, originality, and relation to academic subject area. Gift cards will be mailed to the winners.

Students may enter once per month and may enter every month.

G4) Research Paper Contest

For Students Age 11-18 (as of November 14, 2011)
(student's age will be considered in judging - any homeschooled student in this age range may participate in this contest - you do not have to be a Landry Academy student)

Your Research Paper Should Directly or Indirectly Answer the Question:

How Does Human Anatomy and/or Physiology
Support the Biblical Account of the Creation of Humans?

1st Place Prize: 15 inch Laptop Computer
2nd Place Prize: 13 inch Laptop Computer
3rd Place Prize: $100 Amazon Gift Card
4th - 10th Place Prizes: $25 Amazon Gift Card

The purpose of this contest is to build knowledge and encourage the development of skills; in scientific research and writing, using the APA style for a research paper, and in using analytical and critical thinking in the process of creating a quality research paper. Researching and using the APA style is also part of the learning process involved in preparing this research paper.

To celebrate our 11th birthday, every eleventh day of the month is FREE for families, weekdays from noon - 5 p.m.; Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. It's a great time to bring your family; there are always educational and entertaining activities taking place. Our exhibit floor provides endless opportunities for parents and children to interact with one another!

Please note that Free Day is for families only; we can not guarantee the safety of children who are not accompanied by a family member. For the safety of our visitors, we request a ratio of one adult per every five children.

Day Care Organizations and Other Schools: We look forward to your visit on a scheduled Field Trip!

2) Upcoming Plays for students

Make live theater an extension of your classroom.  Mendel Mainstage field trip performances bring learning to life  The field trip performances are filling quickly. A study guide is provided to help incorporate the field trip expierence into classroom studies.

John Henry

John Henry is a well-known figure of American folklore. The production uses storytelling, drama, and music to bring the story of an American legend to life. It is a tale that speaks to young and old alike and carries a strong contemporary parallel about the importance of our humanity in the face of changing technology. 
   
"I Have a Dream" The Life and Times of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Thursday, February 2, 10 a.m., and 12:30 p.m.
Grades: 2 - 12

This is a compelling dramatization of the life and times of one of the most influential and charismatic leaders in America. You will be inspired by the story of this great leader's struggle and his dream of lifting "our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood."

Four Score and Seven Years Ago
Thursday, March 15, 10 a.m. & 12:30 p.m.
Grades: 2 - 8

Two men may be of different races and on different sides of the Civil War, but they have much to teach each other about bravery and loyalty in this exciting and suspenseful musical. To young Lemuel, who has escaped slavery in Georgia, life in Gettysburg is everything he had dreamed it would be. His ideas about the North and the South, as well as what it means to be a free man, are challenged, when he unexpectedly befriends Jacob, a young Confederate soldier.


3) Hospice at Home Open Houses

Hospice at Home is celebrating 30 years of serving our community.  They holding open houses at their facilities and have invited homeschoolers to join them for refreshments, tours, and good conversation. Details follow:
 
October 20, 4-7 p.m. - South Haven, 30 year Anniversary Open House 05055 Blue Star Highway
 
November 9, 4-7 p.m. St. Joseph,  Lory's Place, 445 Upton Drive, 7-Year Open House/Hospice at Home 30 year Anniversary Open House


4) Spelling Bee

The Homeschool Hub will again be sponsoring the Scripps Spelling Bee this year.  The date of the school spelling be will be announced later as those who sign up discuss the range of date possibilities.  Any student interested in signing up should email Diane Day for details. The enrollment fee is up this year so the entrance fee will be $15 per speller.  Please do not delay.  Email or call with questions or committments.  Diane Day 269-445-1900 or joharding_20@yahoo.com.


5) Bethel College Presents "The Hobbit"

Bethel College will present, "The Hobbitt" October 6, 7, & 8.  They are offering a field trip performance on that Thursday, October 6 at 9:30 am.  Ticket prices are greatly reduced to Students - $5, Teachers are free.  Those interested should contact Bethel ticket office directly at 574-807-7080. You may request seating with the Homeschool Hub.

The Bethel College department of theatre will present J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," dramatized by Patricia Gray. "The Hobbit" stirs the imagination and intellect of everyone. Bilbo, one of the most conservative of Hobbits, is asked to leave his home in order to set off as chief robber in an attempt to recover an important treasure. It's the last thing that any sensitive Hobbit would want to do. The epic journey, filled with dwarfs, elves, goblins and other adventures is sure to thrill one and all. It's a show the whole family can enjoy.

The Homeschool Hub has some used curriculum that is available for free.  They also accept anything, school related for donation and will keep it for use by other homeschoolers.  If you have and want to donate or need call Diane Day 269-445-1900.
