The gardens are available to and utilized by homeschool families.  There is an online competition in which the top 5 vote getting gardens split a $20,000 grant.  You can vote online once daily until August 6th.  If we can get more people voting for Niles we have a very good chance to help a great project in our community.  Here is the link you go to for voting...Niles is bottom row, second from left:

1)  2nd Annual Homeschool Info Night

Mark your calendars!  The 2nd Annual Homeschool Info Night will be Tuesday August 28th from 6-8 at LMC Bertrand in Niles, MI.  If you have a club, class, group, or activity that caters to homeschoolers, you are welcome to set up an info table.  If you are a tutor or teacher or offer any service of interest to homeschoolers, you are welcome to set up an info table.  Contact Diane Day to reserve a spot: joharding_20@yahoo.com.  If you are a homeschooler, save the date!  It will be a night for info and connection with other homeschoolers.  Last year was great, and we hope to make this year even greater!  Feel free to pass this info along to anyone you know who might be interested.


2)  Summer Drama Camp

Sing, Act, Dance or all three while having fun learning about
several aspects of theatre!  We will study audition techniques, script
study techniques, presentation techniques, singing, acting and dancing
all week long!  We will have a production at the end of the week for
friends and family!

What a great opportunity ! Only $50 for the entire week from 9 a.m. -1p.m.

Your student will have the chance to perform with us on stage at the
Blueberry Festival and more!

3) World Harmony Run
 
The Run is coming to Niles this Wednesday morning.  There will be about 8 or 10 runners from all different countries.  They will run in from US12 and Chicago Rd starting at 9am.  Anyone who wants to can join them there and run into town with them and the police escort.  They will be at City Hall at 9:30am to be greeted by the Mayor and to speak about their countries and world peace.  Then anyone who wants to can join them and run out of town with them for as far as they want to go.  Here is their website: http://www.worldharmonyrun.org/about,  Here is a youtube video by the  United Nations:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=QSguJccTJJs&NR=1.


4)  Fall Art Classes

New Creations Offers 2012 Fall Art Classes in the Michiana Area for Students in Grades 1-12. Adults and home schoolers welcome!

Gloria Seitz, a certified K-12 art teacher, will be teaching classes on the topic of Elements of Design. This seven week class will study the basic elements of design: line, shape, texture, value, color, and volume, including a variety of projects and mediums used. Some examples include fabric paint, tie dye, metal tooling, pastels, watercolor, and bean mosaics. Older students will also study the principles of design.  CLASSES WILL BEGIN ON THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 17 (skipping  week of Oct15th ) AND END THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 5.

Tuesdays, classes at Community Free Church in Niles are as follows:  Ages 6-9 will meet at 10:30-11:30 a.m. Ages 9-13 meet from 11:45 -12:45 p.m. and 7th -adult meet from 1-2 p.m. (MI times). Classes meet in the south end of the building.

Wednesday classes meet at Trinity Free Church in South Bend. Ages 6-9 will meet at 10:30-11:30 a.m. Ages 9-13 meet from 11:45 -12:45 p.m. and 7th -adult meet from 1-2 p.m.  Classes meet on lower south entrance across from gym.

Thursday classes meet at Hobby Lobby in Mishawaka at the following times:  Ages 6-9 will meet at 11:30-12:30 AND at 12:45-1:45 p.m.. Ages 9-13 will meet at 2-3.  7th through adult will meet from 3:15-4:15. 8 through 13 year olds will meet from 4:20 -5:20 p.m. Classes meet on right side of building near fabrics.

The cost for the seven week classes is $70 for the first child and $5 LESS for each additional child.  You will save $5 on the total cost (not per student) if you pay by September 11 .  Cost includes supplies (except sketch book, erasers, pencil, rulers, Sharpie fine point marker and folder:  These you will need to purchase), room rental, and Art Festival. The Art Festival will be held on Friday, November 9.

You may print out a registration form on line at www.newcreationsart.com.  Classes do fill up, so be sure to get your registration in early.  You may reserve your spot by calling her at 574-271-8069 even before sending in your reservation. 


5) Diner Theater Auditions--this Sunday!

Myers Dinner and Revolution Productions announce auditions for Sugar (Some Like It Hot) will be held this Sunday, June 22nd.  Details follow:

General Audition Date:  July 22, 2012
Time: 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Location:  Myers Dinner Theatre
                 108 Water Street
                 Hillsboro, IN 47949
 
Bring:     16 to 32 bars of a song with CD accompaniment
               A one-minute monologue
                Dance clothes (There will also be a dance audition.)
 
Roles are available for men and women.  NOTE:  The roles of Jerry/Daphne, Joe/Josephine, and Osgood Fielding have been pre-cast.

7)  Upcoming Events at Niles Library

Children are invited to a Pajama Party at 6:00 PM, on Tuesday, July 24th! There will be songs, stories, games, and snacks. Everyone is welcome to wear their pajamas and bring a favorite stuffed animal. All ages are welcome.

On Thursday July 26th our children's movie is Up, and it will be shown at 3:30 PM in the story room. Batman Begins is this week's teen movie and it will be shown at 5:00 PM in the community room (also on the 26th).

Monday, July 23rd, will be Town Square Game Day, from noon until 4:00 PM in the Popular Materials section.

The Video Book Club will meet at 1:30 PM. This week's movie is The Maltese Falcon. Next Monday's movie is The Fiddler on the Roof.

The Library will be hosting the next presentation in the Fort Saint Joseph Archeological Project's Public Lecture Series. Larry Horrigan will present "Firearms of New France" on July 25th at 7:00 PM in the Community Room.

The Adult Summer Reading Awards Ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 28th. During this time, the Olympic Fellowship
Trivia Contest and Food Drive will take place. The cost of admission is one non-perishable food item that will benefit the community of Niles through the St. Mary's Food Bank. Participants are welcome to bring their own team, or join a table. Our categories will be: Olympics, Mythology, Sports, Literature, History, and Film. There will be snacks and prizes.

On August 3 we will offer Mixology. Participants will learn to make summertime cocktails and enjoy samples of non-alcoholic versions of the drinks. This is an adult (eighteen and over) program which will take place after hours, so registration is required. A bouncer will be at the door between 6:15pm and 6:30pm, but he will only let you in if you are on the list. Call 269 683 8545 x112 to sign up.

During July, August and September patrons can have most or all of their fines and fees eliminated simply by asking to "Start Over." The "Start Over" program aims to bring more people to the library by eliminating fines and fees which may be preventing people from using the library. Ask for details at the front desk.


8) Niles Homeschool Partnership Program

NEW:  There is no seated class required for students in grades 6-12.  Younger students (grades 1-5) are still required to take a seated class.

Remember that middle school and high school students registered with the program are allowed to participate in school sports teams.


9) Berrien Springs Parent Partnership

Berrien Springs Parent Partnership is a FREE program to enhance your child's homeschool education with elective class choices in a variety of settings.

What is different this year?
No seated class is required, for any student in grade 1-12!

Only 1-2 virtual classes are required per semester, depending on your student's grade level. All Community Classes are optional, and each student may choose up to 3 per semester.  The field trip and dance classes remain as just two of the many community classes offered.  We have more exciting community classes than ever!  Check out our NEW website at www.berrienspringspartnership.com for more information and how to register.

Looking for a group?  Join the HUB!  We need you.

The HUB is a volunteer organization.  Without the support and participation of homeschool families, we can't function effectively.  There are several benefits of membership including a travel club and a resource library that includes things like books, games, laptops, video cameras and other items to borrow. Members receive first chance at events and classes when availability is limited.  The cost of membership is only $24/year.  Information about becoming a member is on the website at www.hshub.org
