1)  Thank You!

A big thank you to everyone who participated in the Homeschool Info Night on Tuesday.  Lots of connections were made, information shared, and free stuff donated and taken home.  If you missed this one, look for it next year.  Thank you to Lake Michigan College for hosting it as well.  The HUB Board worked hard to put this on as a service to the Michiana homeschool community.

2) Holiday Card Contest--Michigan

This year Chemical Bank will be promoting a Holiday Card Design Contest in which children age 12 years and under are encouraged to showcase their artistic skills! Children throughout Michigan can submit their best card designs to their local Chemical Bank Office. The contest will run from Monday, August 20th through Saturday, September 29th and designs will be chosen in October.

A winning design will be chosen from each of our 15 Community Banks; top finishers will have their design featured on the front cover of the 2012 Chemical Bank Holiday Card for that community. The cards will be sent out to customers and community members in November and December.

Winners will receive a $25 gift card and a $25 coupon, which can be used to open a new Youth Savings account or go towards an existing Youth Savings account. Every child that enters the contest will receive a $10 coupon good for a Youth Savings Account!

Participants will need to select a category that best fits their card design. For Category Rules and Guidelines, please visit www.chemicalbankmi.com/holidaycardcontest.

3)  Discount Swimming/Beach Days

After Labor Day, Fuller's Resort offers the homeschool beach day discount rate for EVERYONE every day. There are no more special "Homeschool Beach Days," but you can enjoy the beach and lake at the homeschool rate any time until the season ends.

Photography--$350 per semester

This class will teach students the basic principles behind design and composition in art, as well as the fundamentals of photography. We will focus on composition, framing, color, exposure, expression and styles in design, as well as the principles behind light capturing and the mechanics of photography. Reading materials and handouts will be distributed in class. Students must have a camera that allows manual control over ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed. They may use a camera they own that fits these parameters or one will be provided for use during the class. Students will need access to their own laptops with Gimp (a free photo editing software). This editing software will be uploaded onto their computers by the instructor when it the laptop is brought to class.

Creative Expressions--$300 per semester

This class will help students learn to convey thoughts and emotions through writing for today's "connected" world in ways that will be well received by their audiences. Scripts for digital presentation, blogging, and web sites will be explored. In this workshop based class, students will be given exercises to hone their writing and their ability to integrate it with today's technology tools. Most reading materials will be provided for in class reading. If additional books are necessary students will be given a list of books to choose from which should be available at local libraries. Progress will be determined by improvement rather than meeting a standard. That way each student will have his or her own goals to set and meet. Students should be prepared to turn in digital copies of their work each week.

Video Production I (fall or spring semester)--$375

The purpose of this class is to help students gain a basic understanding of digital video production. Students will learn the technical aspects of camera work, lighting and basic video and sound editing. Students will also be encouraged to improve their creativity and story telling skills. This is a semester long class.

Video Production II (spring semester only)--$375

This is a project-based class.  Students will work on making their own video project alone or in teams.  The teacher will advise and oversee the projects, teaching whatever skills the student needs to achieve his/her vision successfully.  This is a semester long class.

Individual Sports--$350 per semester for the full program/$175 per semester for one season of one sport

This class is designed to be offered for an entire year, encompassing two sports: tennis and skiing. Students may take tennis all year or combine tennis and skiing for the full program.  From September to December, students will have tennis instruction, from December to March the student will ski (at either Bittersweet Ski Resort in Kalamazoo or Swiss Valley – student's choice), and then from March to June it's back to tennis. Tennis instruction will have a specific day and time of meeting, while the skiing will be of the skier's choice within the specific number of allowed skiing days.
