G1) Benefits of Homeschooling

Here is an excellent recent article about the benefits of homeschooling:
http://childrensmd.org/uncategorized/why-doctors-and-lawyers-homeschool-their-children-18-reasons-why-we-have-joined-americas-fastest-growing-educational-trend/

and here is a smaller link in case that one gives you trouble:  http://tinyurl.com/dxmtdes  (Both links lead to the same webpage.)

G2)  Photo Contest

The EE Week Photo Contest runs from April 1-May 31, 2013 and is open to all legal United States residents who are affiliated with an organization that provides K-12 educational programs, are 18 years of age and older and have a valid e-mail account.

Prizes include a Samsung Galaxy Note® 10.1 (Wi-Fi), 16GB, a 14.2 Megapixel Samsung SMART Camera and a Dual-View Smart Camera with Built-In Wi-Fi.

For more info and complete contest rules:  http://www.eeweek.org/photoblog

G3) Google Science Fair Event

Join us on April 12 at 1:00 p.m. for a Google Science Fair 2013 Hangout On Air featuring meteorologist Dan Satterfield who will tell us about the science behind weather. Learn more here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/cioqfo0uu54j2k94pf7thkeqc2o

G4)  Bird Video

Last year, on April 27, the expert birders on Team Sapsucker counted 264 species in a single day, tying the national record. But a single number, even a big one, doesn't do justice to such a flurry of birds. So we've condensed their 24-hour deluge into a 4-minute slideshow. From screech-owls to scrub-jays, yellow-rumps to yellowlegs, this clip shows you (almost) every bird the team recorded, hour by hour during the day. They'll be trying to beat that record this month to raise needed funds for conservation.  The video shows photos of all the species they saw.  See how many you can recognize.

Affinage How to Store and Age Cheese- 165d
Once bitten by the cheese making bug, you start getting into details of cheese well beyond merely making it. One difficult area is the storing and aging of cheese. Without access to a wide range of climates, with different temperatures and humidities, it may look impossible to be able to properly make the huge range of cheeses that are possible.
Join Barbara Jenness as she explains the world of "affinage" or the nurturing and ripening of cheese to bring out their best qualities. Barbara will explain the different conditions required for different cheeses and teach methods and equipment you can use to get the required temperatures and humidity levels to ensure the highest quality cheese.
Minimum Age: 12
d/ April 7 Sun 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Tuition: $90 Materials: $10
with Barbara Jenness

Timber Framing & Raising - 431

An engineer will discuss design elements. Skilled framers guide you through layout, boring and chiseling mortises, forming tenons, cutting wind braces, assembling bents, and finally the thrill of raising day! Enjoy real teamwork! The timber frame is frequently sold to help defray the costs of instruction. Please enroll a month in advance to allow for materials preparation.

This class will explore creative ways to use custom repoussé work as a featured design element in different metalworking & woodworking projects. We'll start with a repoussé refresher targeted at making a few simple pieces to use in class. Students with all levels of skill will have a good time and leave class with a couple of finished projects.

Practical Timber Frame Design - 434
This class gives former students and experienced framers added insights into design. Less focused on hands-on project work than most of Tillers' timber framing classes, this seminar digs into methods, considerations, and engineering of timber frame design. Sizing of rafters, floor joists, beams and posts for typical ag building applications is covered, and design tables for this use based on locally harvested timber species are provided. Bracing considerations are examined. Models – both physical and "digital" - are demonstrated as design tools. Preparation of drawings is shown as an integral part of the process, from design through execution. Joint designs and strength are focal points. Joints are broken under controlled observation and measurement to demonstrate behavior. Minimum age: 16
