G1) Watch a Fluffy Albatross Chick Grow Up on a Nestcam

It may not seem like nesting season to most of us, but it is for Laysan Albatrosses in the Hawaiian islands. Cornell University's  Bird Cams began streaming the action from a nest on Kauai last week, just as a little gray-and-blond chick emerged from its shell. By July this chick—which weighed less than a glass of water at hatching—will grow into a bulky brown-and-white bird with a nearly seven-foot wingspan. To raise their chick, the two parents will range across the Pacific, traveling as far as Alaska or Japan to bring back meals of digested squid. The camera captures incredible details of the birds' plumage—including the soft, almost airbrushed shading of the adults' faces and the frizzy down of the chick.

Watch the cam here:  http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/41/Laysan_Albatross   (If you see a dark screen, bear in mind that dawn in Hawaii is at around noon Eastern time, or 9 a.m. on the West Coast.)

G2)  The Great Backyard Bird Count Starts Feb. 14!

Everyone's favorite midwinter bird count is happening this February 14–17, and for the second year in a row it's open to anyone, anywhere in the world. The Great Backyard Bird Count is a free event now in its 17th year, and by participating you're helping give scientists their biggest, broadest single-moment snapshot of bird populations. Last year nearly 138,000 people participated, counting 33.4 million birds and 4,258 species. A newly redesigned website is full of great features like a gorgeous display for your photo submissions, how-to materials, data exploration tools, and tricky bird ID help. Come count with us.

G3) Math Contest for Students 14 and under

A national U14 math competition will be held in Orlando, Florida on Friday, March 28th, 2014. The winner will receive $10,000. This competition is called National Number Knockout (N2K) because we want to knock out innumeracy by improving calculating speed and accuracy. At the moment, N2K is accepting scouting videos of students playing the game. Videos are due by  February 20, 2014. After we review the videos, we will choose the 32 best and brightest students to compete for the grand prize. All expenses to Orlando will be paid—covered for the 32 finalists and one parent each!

Learn about the contest:  http://nationalnumberknockout.com/

Register for FREE, receive the PDF rulebook, and upload the scouting video of your student:  http://www.classicalconversationsbooks.com/nanukn.html

G4)  Free Art Books

The Getty Museum offers an extensive collection of art books in digital format that you can download for free.  Many would go well with art or history studies.
